  • A novel and efficient tetrahydrofuranyl ring opening method was developed using the highly reactive TFAT reagent in the presence of an acid scavenger, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpyridine. Various acid sensitive groups are compatible with the reaction condition, making it generally applicable to many tetrahydrofuranyl steroids. Moreover, it is a synthetic equivalent of 'Marker degradation' affording an efficient synthesis of C17-OH rockogenin acetate.

  • Numerous novel marine natural products have been discovered and isolated from varied marine organisms by the diligent bio-prospectors over the past decades. An assessment of the current status of commercial development of these natural compounds indicates only minimal commercialization due to the lack of sustainable supply. To bridge the gaps between discovery and commercialization of these tantalizing bioactive compounds, marine bioprocess engineering is the key for its success. The problems, challenges and opportunities for marine bioprocess engineers are examined for the timely transformation of the discovery into commercial reality. Marine bioprocess engineers will find it the most rewarding practice of their expertise in diving into the ocean.

  • A large number of natural products were worldwidely discovered from maine organisms. There are many secondary metabolites produced by maine organisms which showed very strong bio-activities and distinct bio-active mechanisms. In korea, about 350 secondary metabolites including more than 280 novel compounds have been isolated and structually defined. Many researches for developing products such as cosmetics, functional food materials, anti-fouling substances are being performed using distinct activities of marine organisms. Although the research on marine natural products has been remained at its initial or developing stage of drug development, significant progress has been made for isolation, structure determination and bioassay of secondary metabolites.

  • A new secondary metabolite was isolated from the culture broth and mycelium of Streptomyces sp. collected from marine sediment. The structure of this compound was determined to be N-formylantimycic acid methyl ester, an acyclic derivative of antimycin, on the basis of combined chemical and spectral methods. The structure-activity relationship of antimycins is discussed.

  • By-products from fisheries produced in Korea are of the same industrial material as imported raw materials and are valuable resources for marine bioindustries. Securing raw materials for the mass production of functional materials is one of the main objectives for marine bioindustrial development. The use of fishery by-products as raw materials is anticipated to increase rapidly as the biomarket is growing into a promising industry. In this study, data were acquired from an open-source environment to perform exploratory data analysis, and various visualization methods were used to compare fishery production to the production of marine processed products in the year 2020. This study suggested that the amount of seafood processing, types of processing items, and areas where fishery processing residue is generated, should be able to secure hygienic raw material supply in large quantities. Thus far, it has been found that the Gyeonggi-do and Busan province, where HACCP-certified processing facilities are concentrated, and the local government Seafood Cluster and the Smart Aquaculture Cluster are at the forefront of stable, mass production of raw materials.

  • With the increasing improvement of living standard, people pay more attention to the quality and security of their food. There is an increase in the consumption of aquatic products and a vast prospect of its trade. Fisheries as a major one of the traditional industries in China have significant price advantages and natural resources. However, marine pollution in China is more and more serious and the expecting of aquatic products has been seriously influenced by green barriers in the recent years. This paper tries to examine the effect of Chinese marine pollution on export of aquatic products in China. This paper utilizes cointegration test to estimate long-run equilibrium between marine pollution and fisheries products export. The results indicate that real exchange rate and income variable have positive effects and fish price has negative effect on China's fisheries export to Korea. However, marine pollution variable has no statistically significant effect on dependant variable. And according to the result of China's fisheries export to Japan, exchange rate has positive effect and both fish price and marine pollution variable have negative effects on export. Lastly, marine pollution and income level have effects on dependant variable in the case of Hong Kong, but exchange rate and price variable have no significant effect on aquatic products export from China to Hong Kong. In a word, marine pollution of China is a serious problem and it has negative effect on Chinese export of aquatic products.
