Global Ocean Observation with ARGO Floats : Introduction to ARGO Program (ARGO 플로트를 이용한 전지구 해양관측 : ARGO 프로그램 소개)

  • To monitor the world's oceans and understand the role of the oceans for climate change, an Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) program has been carried out since year 2000. Autonomous profiling floats of about 820 are reporting the vertical temperature, salinity, and pressure profiles of the upper 2000 m underwater at regular time intervals. Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) launched 45 floats at the East Sea and the western Pacific to understand characteristics of water properties and develop the global ocean observation system as a part of international cooperation project. In this study, we introduce ARGO program, METRI-ARGO and the features of APEX float itself and their data formats. We also describe the significant points to be considered for using ARGO data.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of the wind waves near the Korean marginal seas in the 2002 - 2005 year using the third generation wave model, WAVEWATCH - III model. In order to investigate the model performance, model results were compared with the marine meteorological observation results. The 4 years average correlation coefficient between model and observation shows very high value of about 0.77. The model of this study represents very well the characteristics of wind waves near the Korean marginal seas. Simulated monthly sea surface winds and wind waves show the evident spatial variations and this model also simulates very well seasonal characteristics of wind waves in this region.

Mean Flow and Variability in the Upper Portion of the East Sea Proper Water in the southwestern East Sea with APEX Floats

  • Drift data from 17 Argo profiling floats in the East Sea are used to understand the mean flow and its variability in the upper portion of the East Sea Proper Water (UESPW) (around 800 m). The flow penetrates into the Ulleung basin (UB) through two paths: an extension of the southward flowing of the North Korean Cold Water along the east coast of Korea and between Ulleung Island and Dok island. Flows at 800 m are observed in the range of from 0.2 to 4.29 cms-1 and the variability in the north of the UB is larger than that in the south of the UB. In the UB, cyclonic flows from 0.3 to 1.6 cms-1 are observed with the bottom topography. We found that the mean kinetic energy (MKE) and the mean eddy kinetic energy (EKE) are 1.3 and 2.1 cm2s-2 respectively.

  • 16 APEX floats, autonomous profiling floats deployed as part of the Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) program, are used to understand the currents at 800 m underwater in the southwestern East Sea. The flow penetrates into the Ulleung basin (UB) through two paths: an extension of the southward flowing the North Korean Cold Water along the east coast of Korea and between Ulleung Island and Dok island. Flows at 800 m are observed range 0.2 to 4.29 cm/sec and the variability in the north in the DB is stronger than that in the south. The eddy kinetic energy is found a few $cm^{2}$ $S^{-2}$. In the UB, cyclonic flows from 0.3 - 1.6 cm/see are observed with the bottom topography.

A investigation on the responses of conductive structures of Korean Peninsula using EM modeling

  • Korean Peninsula located between Japan and China where earthquakes frequently occur, have little geophysical observation despite its tectonic importance. This study suggests the inland conductive structures inferred from GDS data measured in Korean Peninsula and try to interpret induction arrows quantitatively with the aid of 2- and 3-D geomagnetic induction modeling. Ogcheon Belt (OCB) and Imjin River Belt (IRB) are regarded as main conductive structures in Korea Peninsula, the induction arrows for the period of 60 minutes show very weak anomaly due to sea effect, which is supported by the results of 3-modeling also. However, for the period of 10 minutes, induction arrows at YIN and ICHN show anomalous patterns considered as the effect of IRB in spite of sea effect. The results of 2-D modeling which simplify geological situations provide overall information on IRB

Development of High-Resolution Pacific Ocean Circulation Model

  • A Pacific Ocean circulation model based on the RIAM Ocean Model (RIAMOM) with $1/6^{\circ}C\;and\;1/12^{\circ}C$ horizontal resolution successfully reproduced the peculiar circulation structures of the Pacific Ocean. The volume transports of model agree very well with the results of observations in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Also our model successfully reproduced the observed structures of the northeastward Ryukyu Current with a subsurface core at $500{\sim}600m$. A Possible mechanism for the subsurface current core of the Ryukyu Current is proposed focusing on the blocking effect of the Ryukyu Island Chain.

  • Currently, there is increasing demand for weather information, however, providing meteorology and climate information is limited. In order to improve them, supporting the meteorology and climate big data platform use and training the meteorology and climate big data specialist who meet the needs of government, public agencies and corporate, are required. Meteorology and climate big data requires high-value usable service in variety fields, and it should be provided personalized service of industry-specific type for the service extension and new content development. To provide personalized service, it is essential to build the collaboration ecosystem at the national level. Building the collaboration ecosystem environment, convergence of marine policy and climate policy, convergence of oceanography and meteorology and convergence of R&D basic research and applied research are required. Since then, demand analysis, production sharing information, unification are able to build the collaboration ecosystem.
