A marine collision accident occurred at the Jin-do water way. A barge loaded with heavy equipment of Power Generation Plant was being towed at its side by two tugs "A" and "B" from Byeg-pa harbour to the designated position to be used for power generation plant near Jin-do bridge. The Power Generation Plant was 40-meters high loaded atop the barge. When the "tugs and tow" were approaching the Jin-do the bridge, the two towing tugs lost maneuvering control of the barge and it went off-course, hit first the waterway embankment and finally struck the lower part of bridge's span and post musing the barge to capsize and sunk its cargo into the sea. The bridge also suffered damages where the top of the Plant struck At the time of the accident, there was a strong tidal current at the waterway. This paper calculates the safe towing force of barges with heavy loads when traversing in a strong tidal current situation in narrow waterway.

It is necessary that the construction of submerged breakwater could minimize and compensate the negative effect on the marine environment and ecosystem caused by the Saemangeum reclamation. The important merit of this proposal is that the space between Saemangeum embankment and submerged breakwater is expected to become nursery ground for fish and shellfishes. The purpose of this study was investigated hydraulic characteristic of submerged breakwater to investigate the possibility of mitigation in the fisheries ground by hydraulic experiment.

Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The laboratory model tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. Two cylindrical containers for the model test were filled with marine clayey soil from the west coast of Korea with a column in the center, one with sand, the other with gravel. Vibrating wire type piezometers were installed at the distance of 1.0D, 1.5D and 2.0D from the center of the column. The characteristics of consolidation were studied with data obtained from the measuring instrument place on the surface of the container. The parameter study was performed on the marine clayey soil before and after the test in order to verify the effectiveness of the improvement. The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.
The Pre-loading method has been widely used for the soft ground stabilization but long construction times and the transport of large quantities of fill material are required. To shorten the construction periods, the vertical drain method is generally applied simultaneously. But the high costs of the fill materials along with environmental damages remain as the main difficulties to apply this method. Therefore, a complimentary way to reduce both the height of the embankment and the consolidation time is needed. In this study, the electro-osmosis method, which is able to shorten the consolidation time and minimize the damage of the environment, was performed with a model test. The results show that as the voltage increases the consolidation settlements, consolidation drainage and shear strength also increase while the water content decreases.
This paper describes the performance of ground improvement project using prefabricated vertical drains of condition, in which approximately 10m dredged fill overlies original soft foundation layer in the coastal area composed of soft marine clay with high water content and high compressibility. From field monitoring results, excessive ground settlement compared with predicted settlement in design stage developed during the following one year. In order to predict the final consolidation behavior, recalculation of consolidation settlements and back analysis using observed settlements were conducted. Field monitoring results of surface settlements were evaluated, and then corrected because large shear deformation occurred by construction events in the early stages of consolidation. To predict the consolidation behavior, material functions and in-situ conditions from laboratory consolidation test were re-analyzed. Using these results, height of additional embankment is estimated to satisfy residual settlement limit and maintain an adequate ground elevation. The recalculated time-settlement curve has been compared with field monitoring results after additional surcharge was applied. It might be used for verification of recalculated results.
This study is the results of experimental and numerical study on the consolidational behavior of multi-layered soft soil ground installed with plastic board drains (PBD). Centrifuge model tests with a marine clay sampled from field were performed to investigate the consolidational behavior of multi-layered ground where a dredged soil was placed on the soft clay ground and PBDs were installed. Test results were compared with those of numerical analyses, using the 2-D equivalent model previously proposed. From test results, it was found that the amount of consolidation settlement occurred in the original ground due to embankment surcharge loads was in the range of 38% of total settlement in the whole ground. From the results of cone penetration tests executed after finishing the centrifuge model tests, the cone resistance was found to increase with depth. The measured water contents inbetween PBDs were in the ranges of 38~50% and their values tended to increase with increasing the distance between PBDs.
Two poorly known and often confused pleurostomatid ciliates, Litonotus paracygnus Song, 1994 and L. pictus Gruber, 1884, were collected from the coastal waters of Yeonggeumjeong and Bongpo-port, Gangwondo in the East Sea and from the Iwon tide embankment near Ganwol-do, Chungcheongnam-do in the Yellow Sea, Korea. These species were described based on live observations, the protargol-impregnation and morphometrics of the species. Also provided are their diagnoses. The small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequences of these species were compared with previously known sequences of related species. The diagnostics of the two Litonotus species are as follows. L. paracygnus: 150-300 $\mu$m long in vivo, strongly contractile neck region, two ellipsoid macronuclei (Ma) and one micronucleus (Mi), 7 left (LSK) and 11-14 right somatic kineties (RSK), 2-4 contractile vacuoles (CV) located on the posterior end, extrusemes (Ex) distributed on the anterior region of the ventral margin only. L. pictus: about 200-600 $\mu$m long in vivo, extremely contractile, beautiful body color with rows of yellow to yellow-brownish cortical pigment granules, 12-21 Ma arranged in moniliform pattern, infrequently vermiform, 7-11 LSK and 18-26 RSK, several CV located on both margins, Ex distributed on the anterior region of the ventral margin only. In this study, this genus was firstly recorded in Korea.

To research changes in the fish community of intertidal zones in relation to the construction of the Saemangeum tidal embankment, fishes were collected in the tide pools of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, and of Haechang, Buan-gun in Jeollabuk-do, every month from December 2002 to October 2004. Based on the fishes collected and data from previous studies show that in the tide pools of Haechang, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species is Tridentiger trigonocephalus, as before. However, in the tide pools of Naechodo, the number of species decreased, and the dominant species changed from T. trigonocephalus to Synechogobius hasta. Favonigobius gymnauchen, which inhabits sand-beds, decreased remarkably. Meanwhile, in the intertidal zone of Haechang, young black porgy were caught in large quantities, while in the intertidal zone of Naechodo, young Acanthopagrus schlegelii and Lateolabrax japonicus, which had been caught in a large amounts between 1994 and 2000, were not caught. The results are thought to show that the intertidal zone of Naechodo, Gunsan-si, had more deposits by tide flats than that of Haechang, Buan-gun, which drastically changed the habitat of its fish community.
The Youngsan River estuary was physically changed by the construction of a sea embankment at near the mouth of estuary. Weirs were also constructed recently in the freshwater zone and it was reported that algal blooms occur more frequently. The freshwater introduced into saltwater zone from sluice gates of the embankment affects water quality but it has not been addressed that how the freshwater inputs influence the health of marine ecosystem. In this study, we used the data of water properties and phytoplankton communities collected at three stations for 4 days including before the freshwater discharge, during the discharge and after 1 and 2 days of discharge events. WQI(water quality index), TRIX (trophic status index) and P-IBI(phytoplankton index of biotic integrity) were used to evaluate the ecosystem health and long-term data were also utilized to determine the criteria for P-IBI. The results showed that grades of the ecosystem health assessed by the indices were low at the station near the gates and increased as downstream. However, the temporal pattern of grades was different depending on methods. Grades of WQI and TRIX decreased during the discharge and restored after the discharge whereas the grades of P-IBI decreased slightly even after the discharge. This suggests that P-IBI is more applicable to estuarine systems where experience extreme change of water properties than WQI and TRIX since P-IBI includes phytoplankton that can respond quickly to the change.

We have carried out integrated research including field survey and numerical modeling to appraise the applicability of SP method to the leakage problems of irrigation facilities. The leakage pattern of the dike studied here can be classified into the three categories: leakage through the abutment, leakage by piping through dike, and leakage due to the composite effects of landslide and distortion of the dike structure. for the numerical modeling to interpret quantitatively SP survey results acquired at dike, we have modified the computer code proposed by Sill (1983) to apply to the leakage problems. The numerical studies match the characteristic patterns of SP anomalies according to the leakage types and appear to be very useful to interpret the leakage zone and path. The SP monitoring results were also well coincided with tidal variations observed at every embankment so we found the SP method is quite effective not only to detect the leakage zone but also to determine the leakage trend. The numerical modeling results also reproduced the SP anomalies due to seawater leakage in the embankment.
