Beringraja pulchra, Cham-hong-eo in Korean, is a mottled skate which is belonging to the cartilaginous fish. Although this species is economically valuable in South Korea as an alkaline-fermented food, there are few microbial studies on such fermentation. Here, we analyzed microbial changes and pH before, during, and after fermentation and examined the effect of inoculation by a skin microbiota mixture on the skate fermentation (control vs. treatment). To analyze microbial community, the V4 regions of bacterial 16S rRNA genes from the skates were amplified, sequenced and analyzed. During the skate fermentation, pH and total number of marine bacteria increased in both groups, while microbial diversity decreased after fermentation. Pseudomonas, which was predominant in the initial skate, declined by fermentation (Day 0: 11.39 ± 5.52%; Day 20: 0.61 ± 0.9%), while the abundance of Pseudoalteromonas increased dramatically (Day 0: 1.42 ± 0.41%; Day 20: 64.92 ± 24.15%). From our co-occurrence analysis, the Pseudoalteromonas was positively correlated with Aerococcaceae (r = 0.638) and Moraxella (r = 0.474), which also increased with fermentation, and negatively correlated with Pseudomonas (r = -0.847) during fermentation. There are no critically significant differences between control and treatment. These results revealed that the alkaline fermentation of skates dramatically changed the microbiota, but the initial inoculation by a skin microbiota mixture didn't show critical changes in the final microbial community. Our results extended understanding of microbial interactions and provided the new insights of microbial changes during alkaline fermentation.
This study was carried out to compare the quality properties of chicken breast surimi manufactured by four different procedures/methods. Surimi was made from chicken breast by washing two (T1) or four times (T2) with water as well as by pH adjustments at 3.0 (T3) or 11.0 (T4). The contents of moisture and crude fat were significantly higher in the surimi manufactured from pH-adjusted material than after washing. Again, collagen and yield were significantly higher in chicken breast surimi manufactured from washed than pH-adjusted samples, whereas crude protein was higher in the pH-adjusted than washed surimi samples. There was no significant difference in myofibrillar protein content among the surimi manufactured after different washing times and differences following pH adjustments were found. T4 showed highest myofibrillar protein content rating among the surimi samples. All physical characteristics were higher in pH-adjusted chicken breast surimi than in T1 and T2 washed surimi samples. The pH-adjusted surimi had higher hardness, gumminess and chewiness than washed surimi samples (p<0.05). The chicken breast surimi made by pH adjustments had higher lightness (L*) than when made by washing times, whereas pH 3.0-adjusted surimi samples had lower whiteness (W) then the other surimi samples. Myoglobin content was significantly higher in the surimi manufactured from pH-adjusted chicken breast samples.

In this paper, we described a case of mass mortality of doctor fish from a private fish hatchery farm in Korea with a history of abnormal swimming behavior, diffuse bleeding on the skin and fins and sudden death caused by fish pathogenic bacteria, Citrobacter freundii. Twelve moribund fish fingerling samples were submitted to College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University in October 2008 for diagnostic examination. Diagnostic results showed that the morphological and biochemical properties of the bacteria isolated from the moribund fish were C. freundii. The remaining diseased fish from the hatchery farm were given treatment based on our recommendation and successfully recovered.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of Ca-Mg complex on the longevity and reproductive performance of sows. In total, seventy-two gilts ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc, average body weight 181 kg) were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments during 4 successive parity in a 4 × 3 factorial arrangement. Treatments consisted of CON (basal diet), CM1 (basal diet -MgO - 0.3% limestone + 0.4% Ca-Mg complex), and CM2 (basal diet - MgO - 0.7% limestone + 0.4% Ca-Mg complex). A higher (p < 0.05) number of totals born and live piglets, and sows increased feed intake during gestation and lactation, increased backfat thickness, and increased estrus interval were observed (p < 0.05) during their third and fourth parity than during their first and second parity. Ca-Mg complex supplementation improved (p < 0.05) the number of total piglets during the first and second parity as well as live-born piglets during the first to third parity, reduction (p < 0.05) in backfat thickness during the third and fourth parity, a higher (p < 0.05) initial and final number of suckling piglets as well as higher weaning weight compared with sows fed CON diet during the first, second, and third parity. The average daily gain (ADG) was higher (p < 0.05) in piglets born to CM1 and CM2 sows regardless of parity. The treatment diets fed to sows lowered (p < 0.05) the duration of first to last piglet birth and placenta expulsion time compared with CON sows. A significant interactive effect (p = 0.042) between parities and treatment diets was observed for the first to last piglet birth. Thus, Ca-Mg complex supplementation by partially replacing limestone in the basal diet enhanced sow performance, specifically during their third and fourth parity, thereby improving sow longevity.
The production performance of multiparous lactating Sahiwal cows (n = 24) was evaluated according to both milking frequency and method. Selected animals were randomly divided into four groups containing six animals each under a completely randomized design. Cows in groups A & B were milked by the hand milking method three times per day, respectively. Similarly, cows in groups C & D were milked by the machine milking method two and three times per day, respectively. All animals were maintained under uniform feeding and management conditions. Dry matter intake was high in animal groups milked three times per day, and it remained unchanged between the hand and machine milking methods. Milk yield was higher (P < 0.05) in cows milked three times compared to those milked twice per day, and it did not differ between hand and machine milking methods. Milk fat percentage was higher (P < 0.05) in cows milked twice per day compared to those milked three times using both machine and hand milking methods. The percentage of total solids showed a similar pattern as the fat percentage. However, percentages of protein, lactose, and non-fat solids in milk were not significantly different (P > 0.05) among the treatment groups. Collectively, the results show that milking three times per day instead of twice at 8-hour intervals can enhance milk yield in Sahiwal cows using both hand and machine milking methods.
Two new marine gastrotrichs of the genus Pseudostomella, P. longifurca and P. koreana, are described from the shallow sublittoral sand bottoms of South Korea. Pseudostomella longifurca n. sp. is characterized by the cuticular armature with tetrancres, five dorsal papillae on the prebuccal apparatus, four dorsolateral adhesive tubes, and elongated pedicle. Pseudostomella koreana n. sp. is distinguished from its congeners by the small body, tetrancres, two pairs of dorsolateral adhesive tubes, and tube-shaped copulatory organ. A brief review of the genus is prepared, with the character comparison table for all congeners currently recognized, and a revised key to the species of Pseudostomella. This is the first record of the genus Pseudostomella from East Asia.
The identified Ceratinomorpha consist of 41 species, 21 genera and 12 families. Among them, two species, Clathria mosulpia and Haliclona ulreungia, were new species and the following species were new to Korea: Ophlitaspongia pennata california De Laubenfels, 1936, Desmacella rosea Fristedt, 1887, Clathria dayi Levi, 1963, Clathria parva Levi, 1963, Ax-ociella cylindrica Hallman, 1920, Axocielita calla (De Laubenfels, 1934), Myxilla sigmatifera ( (Levi, 1963), Haliclona perlucida (Griessinger, 1971), Petrosia nigricans Lindgren, 1897, G Gel/ius arcoferus Vosmaer, 1885, Reniera ventillabrum Fristedt, 1887, Reniera pigmentifera D Dendy, 1905, and Coelosphaera physa (Schmidt, 1875)
Hydra and hydromedusa specimens were collected from the Jisanchon Stream in Kyonggi-do (Pyongtaek-shi) and the coasts of Geojedo Island (Jangmok-ri), Korea during the period July 1999-June 2000. They were identified into Hydra magnipapillata Ito, 1947 (Hydridae, Athecatae) and Phialidium folleatum (McCrady, 1857) (Campanulariidae, Leptomedusae) respectively. H. magnipapillata is blackish or light brown color, its cylinder-shaped trunk reaches to 20 ㎜ long and 0.5-0.6 ㎜ wide in fully extended, and has generally 5-6 highly delicate long tentacles. P. folleatum is a small marine hydromedusa, below 5 ㎜ wide and has a minute statocyst between successive tentacles.
Seven new species of cope pods associated with marine invertebrates are described from the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. They are Panjakus bidentis from the scleractinian Pocillopora verrucosa (Ellis and Solander), Scyphuliger humesi, S. vicinus and S. placidus from the scleractinian Acropora squarrosa (Ehrenberg), Doridicola parapatulus from the nudibranch Glossodoris atromarginata (Cuvier), Ruhtra germinata from an unidentified alcyonacean coral, and Collocheres oribullatus from the crinoid Comanthina belli (Carpenter).
Ultrastructure of fertilized egg envelope in the tomato clown anemonefish (Amphiprion freatus) was examined by mean of light, scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The fertilized egg of tomato clown anemonefish was of non-transparent, ellipsoidal, adhesive and non-floted type, and there were numerous oil droplets in the yolk sac and adhesive filaments in the area of the animal pole. The outer surface of egg envelope was smooth. The fertilized egg envelope consisted of two distinct layers; a non-adhesive outer electron-dense layer and an inner layer, consisting of five horizontal low electron-dense lamellae alternating with the middle electron dense interlamellae.
