  • For the purpose of taxonomical description of marine oligotrich ciliates, water samples were collected from the southern coast of Korea (Masan Bay and Jangmok Bay). Ciliate cells were identified based on protargol impregnated specimens. As a result, four oligotrich ciliates were identified and redescribed: Rimostrombidium conicum (Kahl, 1932), Omegastrombidium kahli Song et al., 2009 and Spirotontonia turbinata (Song and Bradbury, 1998), and Spirotontonia grandis (Suzuki and Han, 2000). Of them, R. conicum, O. kahli, and S. turbinata are newly recorded and S. grandis is recorded for the second time in Korea, while the last one is redescribed to compare its variations according to locality. In addition, their abundances were analyzed and discussed the changes in accordance with water temperature and salinity.

  • Aggregate and solitary zooids of salps were collected from April 2001 to June 2009. By the analyses based on the morphological characteristics, four species in the genus Cyclosalpa of the subfamily Cyclosalpinae are identified as new records in Korean waters: Cyclosalpa affinis (Chamisso, 1819), Cyclosalpa bakeri Ritter, 1905, Cyclosalpa sewelli Metcalf, 1927, and Cyclosalpa polae Sigl, 1912. These species are re-described with illustrations and photographs in this study. In addition, a key to species of the genus Cyclosalpa in Korean waters and a key to the life cycles of Salpida are provided. As a result of this study twelve species in the Salpidae have been reported from Korea until now.

  • The stomatopods are aggressive predatory marine crustaceans, which are mainly found in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, a parasquillid stomatopod, Faughnia formosae Manning and Chan, 1997, collected from Jeju Island, is reported for the first time in Korea. The family is easily distinguished from other families by the presence of an asymmetrically bilobed cornea, stout propodus on the raptorial claw, and three primary spines of the uropodal protopod. In the paper, detailed descriptions and illustrations of this species are provided alongside a photograph. A key to the species of Korean mantis shrimp is also presented. As a result of this study, four species of stomatopods including this species are now recorded in Korean fauna.

  • A newly recorded aorid species, Paragrandidierella minima Ariyama, 2002, from Korean waters is reported with a description and illustrations, and its generic features are considered. This species is characterized by the carpochelate gnathopod 1 in matured male, the posterodistal protrusion on peduncle 5 of antenna 2, the absence of the apical spine on inner plate of maxilliped, the minute apical projection on inner lobe of lower lip, the acute posteroproximal extension on the basis of each pereopod 5 and 6, the shape of uropods and telson, and the large inter-ramal process of uropod 1. This is the first report of the genus Paragrandidierella from Korea.

  • A new marine sponge in the family Ancorinidae, Penares hongdoensis n. sp. was collected from Hongdo Island, Korea by SCUBA diving in 2004. P. hongdoensis n. sp. is closely related to P. cortius de Laubenfels, 1930 in their spicules. However, they differ in kind and size of spicules and growth form. The dichotriaene rhabds of new species are larger than that of P. cortius. And the new species has oxyaster, but P. cortius has oxyspheraster. Although the growth forms of both species are irregular massive, this new species shows conspicuous long projection toward upper part.

  • Two new marine sponges in the family Chalinidae, Haliclona (Haliclona) uljinensis n. sp. and Haliclona (Reniera) hongdoensis n. sp., are collected from Uljin and Hongdo Island, Korea during 2004-2007. H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (H.) oculata in type of spicules. However, ectosomal skeleton of H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is reticulated and isodictyal reticulated type but H. (H.) oculata has not any dermal specialization in skeleton. The growth form of H. (H.) uljinensis n. sp. is thin encrusting with numerous cylindrical tubes on the surface but H. (H.) oculata is solid branch form. Haliclona (R.) hongdoensis n. sp. is closely related to H. (R.) aquaeductus in skeletal structure and growth form. However, oxeas of H. (R.) hongdoensis n. sp. are larger than H. (R.) aquaeductus's.

  • A newly recorded ampithoid species, Ampithoe akuolaka Barnard, 1970 from Korean waters is reported with a description and illustrations. This species is distinguished from other congeneric species by the following characteristic features: the apical lobules of the lower lip are separated, but short and tumid; the posterodistal corner of the carpus on gnathopod 1 has a triangular extension in mature males; and the palm of gnathopod 2 is largely bifid in mature males. We examine the fine structures that are not mentioned in the original description using scanning electron microscopy for a better observation, and present a changed key to Korean ampithoid species.

  • Specimens of nudibranchs have been surveyed by scuba diving from 9 localities along the Korean coast. By examination of morphological characteristics, four species in the superfamily Doridoidea which are new to Korea were identified, and re-described: Thorunna florens (Baba, 1949), Diaulula sandiegensis (Cooper, 1863), Jorunna parva (Baba, 1938), and Doris odhneri (MacFarland, 1966). In addition, radulae of three species were observed and photographed by using scanning electron microscopy. As a result of the study, 16 species of doridoidean nudibranch are now known from Korean waters.
