Morphological Description of a Newly Recorded Strombus luhuanus (Strombidae: Gastropoda) from Korea

  • The Strombus Linn$\acute{e}$, 1758 is a genus of marine mollusks belonging to the class Gastropoda, and is distributed in the tropical waters of the world. Typically, the family Strombidae includes five extant genera (Strombus, Lambis, Terebellum, Tibia, and Rimella), all of which are mostly found in tropical waters. Five individuals of Strombus luhuanus Linn$\acute{e}$, 1758 were collected from Uljin, Gyeongsangbuk-do province for the first time. In this study, we describe details of shell morphology and radula characters of the species with scanning electron microscopy images of the radula. This is a new record of Strombus luhuanus Linn$\acute{e}$, 1758 from Korean waters.

Two Marine Sponges of the Family Ancorinidae (Demospongiae: Astrophorida) from Korea

  • Two sponges, Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) and Stryphnus sollasi n. sp., were collected from depth of 24-30 m at Jeju-do Island and Chuja-do Island by SCUBA diving from July 2003 to June 2010. The new species Stryphnus sollasi n. sp is similar with Stryphnus niger Sollas, 1886 in the composition of spicules, however they differ in colour and spicule size. This new species has smaller oxeas and larger oxyasters than those of S. niger. This new species has two size categories of oxyaster but S. niger has one size category of oxyaster. The colour of S. sollasi n. sp is white, but the latter puce black. Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) is first recorded in Korean fauna.

A Newly Recorded Sea Cucumber of the Genus Psolus (Holothuroidea: Dendrochirotida: Psolidae) from the East Sea of Korea

  • A sea cucumber was collected from Gonghyeonjin in the East Sea of Korea at a depth of 50 m on 22 June 2011 and was identified as Psolus phantapus (Strussenfelt, 1765). This species belongs to the family Psolidae of the order Dendrochirotida based on morphological characteristics and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence analysis. Psolus phantapus, which widely distributes in the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans, is newly recorded in the Korean fauna. Two Psolus species including the previously reported P. squamatus are recorded in the East Sea of Korea.

Annotated List of the Korean Triphoridae (Gastropoda), with a New Record of Mastonia rubra

  • The family Triphoridae Gray, 1847 is a group of marine microgastropods characterized by sinistral (left-coiled) shells except for the subfamily Metaciinae, which has dextral shell coiling. We report a new record of Mastonia rubra (Hinds, 1843) collected from the intertidal zone from Jeju Island, Korea and revise species list for Korean Triphoridae species. Mastonia rubra is distinguished from Inforis fusiformis(Kosuge, 1961) by the purple color of the first and second whorls of the teleoconch, whereas they are light colored and nearly white corresponding whorls in I. fusiformis. Including this new record, the Korean Triphoridae comprises 20 species from 15 genera.

  • Two new records of spionid polychaetes, Prionospio pulchra Imajima, 1990 and Scolelepis (Scolelepis) sagittaria Imajima, 1992, collected from Korean waters are reported here with detailed descriptions and illustrations. Prionospio pulchra can be distinguished from its relatives by remarkably long and apinnate branchiae, the first chaetiger with notopodial chaetae, and the presence of ventral sabre chaetae. Scolelepis (Scolelepis) sagittaria is characterized by a sagittate prostomium, an occipital tentacle, and bi- or tridentate hooded hooks. In this paper, photographs of scanning electron microscopy for characteristic features of each species are presented. Keys to Prionospio and Scolelepis species from Korean waters are also provided.

Growth and Estimated Production of Acanthogobius flavimanus in an Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Bed and Unvegetated Tidal Flat of Dongdae Bay

  • The growth and estimated production of Acanthogobius flavimanus (1.9${\sim}$24.7 cm TL) were investigated in an eelgrass bed and unvegetated tidal flat of Dongdae Bay, Korea from March 2006 to February 2007. Growth in fish total length was expressed by the von Bertalanffy's growth equation as: $L_t=43.238(1-e^{-03138(t+02507)})$. Estimated densities, biomass, daily and annual production, and P/B ratio were higher at eelgrass bed than those of at unvegetated tidal flat. Monthly variation in daily production was large; the peak numbers occurred in November 2006 ($0.0014g/m^2$/day) at eelgrass bed, whereas was $0.002g/m^2$/day in July 2006 at unvegetated tidal flat. The eelgrass bed has been supported to maintain capacity of higher production of A. flavimanus than those of in unvegetated tidal flat.

Two Newly Recorded Species of Colobometridae and Calometridae(Echinodermata, Crinoidea, Comantulida) in Korea (한국산 돌기 발갯고사리류와 단단한갯고사리류(극피동물문, 바다나리강, 바다나리목)의 2미기록종)

  • Some crinoids collected by scuba divers from Jeju Island, Geomundo Island and Yokjido Island were identified. Of which two species, Oligometra chinensis A. H. Clark, 1918 belonging to the family Colobometridae and Neometra multicolor (A. H. Clark, 1907) belonging to the family Calometridae, order Comantulida, turned out to be new to the Korean fauna. The Calometridae was reported in Korea for the first time.

  • Thirty-three species or subspecies of marine peteriomorphs from Ullng Island, Korea are described . All the described species are new to the fauna of this island. Among them, five speices, Modiolus (Modiolus) comptus Sowerby, 1915, Gregareiella coralliophaga(Gmelin, 1791) , Musculus (Musculus) laevigatus (Gray, 1824), Chlamys(Coralichlamys) jousseaumei Bavay, 19.4, Spndylus (Spondylus) varius Sowerby, 1829 are newly recorded in Korean waters. These five species are redescribed.

  • The ascidians of Chundo Island are identified into 15 species, 8 genera, 6 families. Among them two species are found to be new to Korean fauna. They are Ascidia sydneiensis Stimpson and Ascidia zara Oka. They are described with figures, and the other species are provided with remarks.

First Record of Aliaporcellana and Lissoporcellana (Crustacea: Decapoda: Porcellanidae) from Korea

  • Two porcelain crab species, Aliaporcellana pygmaea (De Man, 1902) and Lissoporcellana nakasonei (Miyake, 1978), are reported here for the first time from Korean waters based on specimens collected from Jeju Island, Korea. The genus Aliaporcellana Nakasone and Miyake, 1969, and Lissoporcellana Haig, 1978 are also reported here for the first time in Korea. Aliaporcellana pygmaea has a wide distribution. The specimen reported here is the most northern record of this species. While, Lissoporcellana nakasonei, associated with anthozoans, was known for distributing range from New Caledonia to southern Japan. As a result, the distribution rage of L. nakasonei is changed to Korea. Now, 12 species of porcelain crabs have been reported in Korean waters.
