In order to analyze the pollution characteristics of small plastic debris(SPD) ashore on the shoreline of coastal flow, 12 times of survey were conducted on the Gwanganri beach of Busan for nearly 3 years. The sampled stations on the beach were divided into 11 squared survey sites from St. G1 to G11(see [Fig. 1]) and all of SPD was sorted into 11 items like P1 to P11 according to the kind of plastic materials and products(see
). 1. Total weights of them were widely ranged from 3.23g to 30.58g and also total amounts, from 39 ea to 398 ea on each site. 2. The ratio of items, P2 and P3, were accounted for 63% among all of them. 3. The seasonal variabilities of them were not founded with remarkable. 4. The correlation of total weights and amounts have reliable coefficients to some extent on the survey sites, but nearly didn't have reliances on items. 5. The average densities of total weights and amounts were computed with
$4.506g/m^2$ ,$51.936ea/m^2$ , respectively.Distribution and Composition of Plastic Pellets and Trashon the Beaches of the Southem Coast at Korea (우리나라 남해안 해수욕장의 미소플라스틱 분포와 조성)

(1) This study was carried out to obtain seasonal fluctuations of marine debris in 5 beaches near the Southern Coast of Korea during May, 1999 - April, 2000. The results are as follows: 1. The density of marine debris was remarkably highest at Namhae beach among 5 beaches. The major part of debris in the beach was styrofoam, with the density of 348.5
${ea/km}^2$ . But, it was Songjung where the largest amount of resin pellets existed. 2. The composition of styrofoam consisted of 51% of the marine debris, wood& papers was 11%, resin pellets & plastics were 8% and others were 16%. 3. Seasonal fluctuations irregularly change in each beach, but the amount of resin pellets were found to be large only in September. It is estimated that resin pellets are beached upon the coastal beaches by the strong warm currents(Tushima currents) during the summer season. 4. Debris fabrication materials that were found had most of parts made up of PE 71.2%, PP 21.2% and EVA 7.7% through these surveys. 5. In the polluted state, the medium one among the 3 specifications(o1d, medium and new state) occupied 88.5% or so.

The aim of this study knows to occurrence characteristics and monthly transition of foreign marine debris by changing in the marine environment for the national marine debris monitoring areas in the west coastal area. The Jeju Island (5,112) had the highest number for foreign marine debris flowed in the coast. Many areas in the next were surveyed by Hajo Island (1,967), Imja Island (507). Plastic bottles were the most common type to 2,925 piece of the whole collection. Then, the monthly occurrence amount was concentrated in July, September. At this time, analysis results of the marine environment are as follows: The sea surface wind of southerly or southeasterly were predominated. In addition, the sea surface circulations were dominated by inflow of seawater southward along the China Coast and northward from the East China Sea.

This study proposes a marine debris monitoring methods using satellite and drone multispectral images. A multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model was applied to detect marine debris using Sentinel-2 satellite image. And for the detection of marine debris using drone multispectral images, performance evaluation and comparison of U-Net, DeepLabv3+ (ResNet50) and DeepLabv3+ (Inceptionv3) among deep learning models were performed (mIoU 0.68). As a result of marine debris detection using satellite image, the F1-Score was 0.97. Marine debris detection using drone multispectral images was performed on vegetative debris and plastics. As a result of detection, when DeepLabv3+ (Inceptionv3) was used, the most model accuracy, mean intersection over union (mIoU), was 0.68. Vegetative debris showed an F1-Score of 0.93 and IoU of 0.86, while plastics showed low performance with an F1-Score of 0.5 and IoU of 0.33. However, the F1-Score of the spectral index applied to generate plastic mask images was 0.81, which was higher than the plastics detection performance of DeepLabv3+ (Inceptionv3), and it was confirmed that plastics monitoring using the spectral index was possible. The marine debris monitoring technique proposed in this study can be used to establish a plan for marine debris collection and treatment as well as to provide quantitative data on marine debris generation.

We discovered a halacarid mite species, Isobactrus tuberculatus Abé, 1996, inhabiting marine plastic debris on the coast of Jeju Island, Korea. The key characteristics of these Korean specimens were consistent with those in the original description of specimens from Hokkaido, Japan, including the presence of tuberculate membranous cuticles between the anterior and posterior dorsal plates, fusion of the posterior epimeral plates I and II, tibia II with a bipectinate seta, tibiae III and IV each with five setae, and a pair of subgenital setae in females. However, two small morphological differences were noted: the distance between the anterior and posterior dorsal plates was shorter than that in Japanese specimens, and the location of dorsal seta-2 was closer to the anterior dorsal plate in Korean specimens. We herein provide detailed illustrations of I. tuberculatus, based on the Korean specimens, with a brief taxonomic comment on the similarities among allied congeneric species. The genus Isobactrus is first reported in Korea.

In order to analyze the pollution extent of small plastic debris(SPD) ashore on the shoreline of coastal flow, 12 of survey was conducted at Song-Jung beach of Busan for several years. The sampled beach was divided into 9 sites with unit area(
$m^2$ ). Many of SPD were detected in the southern part of the beach and classified into 11 items as P1 to P11 according to the contents. Average densities of total items' weight were$2.955g/m^2$ and weights of P2, P3 item were composed of about 64% among them. And average densities of total items' quantity were$56.259ea/m^2$ and quantities of P6 only were composed of about 63%. Seeing the seasonal variation, fall season was abundant extremely whereas nearly nothing in spring. The correlation of weights and quantities have reliable coefficients to some extent on sites and season but nearly don't have reliances on item, tide, wind and precipitation. Many researching data were required if possible in order to discussing about the correlation.

Abundance and composition of marine debris on 13 beaches of Tongyeong City, South Korea were surveyed in 2013 Autumn. The average quantity of macro debris (>25 mm) was about 30 particle/
$m^2$ and that of micro debris (1 mm-25 mm) was about 26,971 particle/$m^2$ . This is a very high level compared with other areas of South Korea and the other countries. Among the 7 material types of debris (styrofoam, hard plastic, fiber, metal, glass, wood and others), styrofoam composed a large portion: 75% of macro debris and 98% of micro debris. And among the 'whole' styrofoam debris items whose original volume is remained more than 50%, styrofoam buoy debris composed 93%. This result suggests that the beaches surveyed are seriously contaminated by marine debris, and most of its sources are aquaculture styrofoam buoys. Management of styrofoam buoy debris used for oyster aquaculture in Tongyeong City is important not only for Tongyeong city, but also for other areas, because Tongyeong city hosts the biggest number of oyster aquaculture areas in South Korea.

Transport of marine debris between countries is a potential source of diplomatic conflicts. U-i Island in Shinan County, Jeonnam Province has been reported by media as being damaged by marine debris from foreign countries. However, scientific researches on those marine debris have not been published. So, the features of foreign marine debris on Seongchon Beach in U-i Island were surveyed on Feb. 2012. The ratio of marine debris from foreign countries was 34.7% by number of items, 56.3% by weight, and 48.5% by volume in
$200m^2$ transacts. Most of them, 98.9% in number, were inferred to be originated from China. The most abundant items were plastic beverage bottles and black floats. The total number of black floats was 539 within the 1,100m beach. Fifteen of them had information on manufactured locations, of which 87.6% were Liaoning Province in northern China. As domestic policy cannot prevent the inflow of the marine debris from foreign countries, countermeasures should be sought out from the international cooperation with the neighboring countries. For the black floats, recycling method should be developed as lots of the same types of black floats are drifted ashore in winter. And, as the U-i Island is a National Park with its valuable natural heritages, methods should be designed to minimize impacts on dune topography and ecology.

Marine debris is defined as a substance that is intentionally or inadvertently left on the shore or is introduced or discharged into the ocean, which has or is likely to have a harmful effect on the marine environments. In this study, the detection of marine debris and the analysis of the amount of change on marine debris were performed using the object detection method for an efficient method of identifying the quantity of marine debris and analyzing the amount of change. The study area is Yuho Mongdol Beach in the northeastern part of Geoje Island, and the amount of change was analyzed through images collected at 15-minute intervals for 32 days from September 12 to October 14, 2022. Marine debris detection using YOLOv5x, a one-stage object detection model, derived the performance of plastic bottles mAP 0.869 and styrofoam buoys mAP 0.862. As a result, marine debris showed a large decrease at 8-day intervals, and it was found that the quantity of Styrofoam buoys was about three times larger and the range of change was also larger.

A series of surveys are performed to evaluate the abundance, composition and distribution of marine debris on the sea bed around the Busan port. In order to set up a master plan for the marine environmental pollution the relevant maritime authority must understand how many and w㏊t kinds of marine litters are distributed on the sea bed. At first we planed to survey areas divided regularly according to the coast line but there were many sea going vessels and fishing boats. So we selected and surveyed the around area where there were no sea going vessels or fishing boats. The obtained results are as follows: 1. The mean values of litters in number and weight are 5.8 pieces/㏊. and 3.5㎏/㏊. respectively. 2. The highest density in terms of number are vinyl and plastic item, and in weight are fishing gear and ship articles. 3. The nearer to the shore we surveyed the more we collected in terms of the density of marine litters in number and in weight per hectare. 4. Eel pot, oiled waste, rope, others, other pot and net of fishing gear litters in number were 59.9, 22.7, 7.9, 4.5, 3.1 and 1.9% respectively. 5. There is no relationship between the amount of fish caught and the amount of marine debris.
