  • To investigate the relationship between metabolic changes in $^1H$-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and fish vaccination, serum was collected from olive flounders treated with a formalin-killed Edwardsiella tarda vaccine and used for $^1H$-NMR metabolite profiling. Principal component analysis and partial least squares were applied to the $^1H$-NMR profile to reduce its complexity and establish class-related clusters. Relative lipid regions were distinguished in vaccinated and non-vaccinated serum. Then, the lipids were extracted from the serum and analyzed. Triolein was identified.

  • of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) is an efficient approach for gene discovery, expression profiling, and development of resources useful for functional genomics. To analyze the transcriptome of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, we have conducted EST analysis using cDNA libraries made from muscle of P. olivaceus. Redundant ESTs were assembled into overlapping contigs by using the assembly program ICAtools software. We found that the 221 ESTs were composed of 21 clusters and 35 singletons, suggesting that the overall redundancy of the library was 74.7%. Of the 221 clones, 218 clones (98.6%) were identified as known genes by BLAST searches and 3 clones (1.4%) did not match to any previously described genes. Based on major functions of their encoded proteins, the identified clones were classified into 13 broad categories. Sequence analysis of the ESTs revealed the presence of microsatellite-containing genes which may be valuable for further gene mapping studies. This study contributes to the identification of many EST clones that could be useful for genetics and developmental biology of olive flounder.

  • Genomic DNA isolated from two geographical ark shell (Scapharca subcrenata) populations was amplified several times by PCR reactions. The ark shell population from Daecheon (ASPD) and from Wonsan (ASPW) in the West Sea and the East Sea of Korean Peninsula, respectively, obtained. The seven arbitrarily selected primers OPA-05, OPA-11, OPB-09, OPB-11, OPB-14, OPC-18 and OPD-07 were shown to generate the loci observed per primer, shared loci by each population, specific loci, unique shared loci to each population and shared loci by the two populations which could be clearly scored. Here, 862 loci were identified in the ASPD population, and 1,191 in the ASPW population: 137 specific loci (15.9%) in the Daecheon population and 84 (7.1%) in the Wonsan population. 407 shared loci by each population, with an average of 58.1 per primer, were observed in the ASPD population. 473 shared loci by each population, with an average of 67.6 per primer, were identified in the ASPW population. The numbers of specific loci in the ASPD and ASPW population were 137 and 84, respectively. Consequently, the average bandsharing value of individuals within the ASPW population was much higher than in the ASPD population. The bandsharing value between individuals' no. 08 and no. 13 was 0.628, which was the highest measured between the two geographical populations. The dendrogram obtained by the seven primers indicated three genetic clusters: cluster 1 (DAECHEON 01-DAECHEON 11), cluster 2 (WONSAN 12 and 14) and cluster 3 (WON SAN 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22). The genetic distance between the two geographical populations ranged from 0.043 to 0.499. Especially, individual no. 10 of Daecheon population was most distantly related to no. 14 of Wonsan population (genetic distance = 0.499).

  • In this paper, I would present a using method for The Fishing Operation Information(FOI) of National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives(NFFC) through the availabilities analysis and put out the similarities by the section of the sea through classifying characteristics of fishing patterns by their locations. As a result, although the catch of FOI is nothing more than 33% level to National Fishery Production Statistics(NFPS), FOI data is useful in understanding the patterns of fishing operation by the location because both patterns and correlation were very similar in the usability analysis, comparing the FOI data with NFPS. So I classified optimal clusters for catch, the number of fishing days and the number of fishing vessels through 2 step cluster analysis by the big marine zone and divided fishing patterns.

  • Success of communication at sea is directly linked with clear and complete delivery and receipt of the target message between interlocutors. It can be said that speakers' effective delivery of their intended message and listeners' precise decoding and accurate understanding are the keys to successful maritime communication. From this perspective, the scope of maritime English education and training needs to be reconceptualized and expanded into the area of communication itself, beyond the simple acquisition of, and familiarization with, IMO Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP). Therefore, in order to make learners' acquisition of marine communication knowledge more feasible, and the knowledge learned more practically applicable, training on effective and clear oral delivery should be also considered within the frame of maritime English education. Thus, critical training elements to realize this goal need to be suggested as guidelines. In this presentation, the theoretical background on this will be introduced in terms of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and Lingua Franca Core (LFC), which are the current mainstream forms of English communication in the international business context. Based on this, six key training elements will be discussed; that is, speech rate, word groups, pauses, nuclear stresses, consonants (including consonant clusters), and vowels (specifically long and short vowels). Finally, the practical pedagogical methods of each element, and its actual application into a real ESP classroom, will be suggested.

  • Genomic DNA was isolated from the Gracilaria vermiculophylla (GRV) and G. chorda (GRC) from Jangheung located in the southern sea of the Korean Peninsula, respectively and we performed clustering analyses, DNA polymorphisms and the genetic differences. The seven selected primers OPC-01, OPA-04, OPA-05, OPD-07, OPD-08, OPB-10, and OPD-16 generated average bandsharing (BS) value, the genetic distance and dendrogram. The size of DNA bands varies from 90 bp to 2,400 bp. The average BS value was $0.859{\pm}0.004$ within GRV and $0.916{\pm}0.006$ within GRC. The average BS value between two Gracilaria species was $0.340{\pm}0.003$, ranged from 0.250 to 0.415. The dendrogram obtained by the seven primers, indicates two genetic clusters. The genetic distance between two Gracilaria species ranged from 0.059 to 0.513. The individual VERMICULOPHYLLA no. 07 of GRV was genetically closely related to VERMICULOPHYLLA no. 06 of GRV (genetic distance=0.059). Especially, two entities between the individual VERMICULOPHYLLA no. 10 of GRV and CHORDA no. 22 of GRC showed the longest genetic distance (0.513) in comparison with other individuals used. Accordingly, as mentioned above, PCR analysis showed that the GRV was a little more genetically diverse than the GRC species. We convinced that this DNA analysis revealed a significant genetic distance between two Gracilaria species pairs (p<0.01).

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the natural habitat of Bulbophyllum inconspicuum Maxim. in Hongdo, Jeonnam Province, South Korea. A field investi gation was conducted between May 2019 and May 2021. The growth of B. inconspicuum species was confirmed in three known regions based on National Survey on the Distribution of Endangered Species. Additionally, in the area investigated, 37 new regions harboring B. inconspicuum were detected. The newly observed B. inconspicuum grew naturally on Quercus mongolica, Rhaphiolepis indica var. umbellata, Carpinus turczaninowii, and rocks. Most of them were found on southeast and southwest slopes with altitude above 250 m. As few as 10 up to hundreds of B. inconspicuum were found in clusters. Close to their habitat, Calanthe sieboldii Decne. ex Regel, C. aristulifera Rchb. f. and C. × kibanakirishima Maek. were also found. As Hongdo is an island, multiple endangered species were found together. Thus, once the habitat of a certain plant is discovered, it is very likely that illegal collection of several other species will also occur. Proactive internal and external measures are needed to preserve these species.
