  • The structural analysis of liquid rocket engine was performed in the case of sinusoidal vibration load to verify structural safety. The finite element model is composed with main liquid rocket engine components, combustion chamber, turbopump, gas-generator, pyro-starter, main pipes, main valve, heat-exchanger, gimbal-mount and brackets. Natural vibration mode analysis and structural analysis for sinusoidal vibration load were performed. The natural mode frequency of liquid rocket engine is twice than that of launch vehicle. In the case of stress result of sinusoidal vibration load, the part of maximum stress has 1.4 margin, so the engine structure is safe for sinusoidal vibration load.

  • Supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) has been performed in selected patients with transglottic carcinoma of larynx who are not amenable to classically conservative Partial laryngectomy. We have applied this procedure for the complete removal of carcinoma and the satisfactory recovery of function in 74 supraglottic laryngeal cancer Patient with thyroid cartilage invasion. The 65-year-old man with supraglottic squamous carcinoma with thyroid cartilage invasion (74 stage) was treated by SCPL with bilateral lateral neck dissection. The part of larynx and whole thyroid cartilage with tumor invasion was completely removed with covering thyrohyoid muscle and fascia. External perichondrium of the thyroid cartilage containing carcinoma was not exposed from the overlying muscle and fascia on postoperative pathological examination. We confirmed the invasion of thyroid cartilage histopathologically. Tumor was confined in the specimen and the safety margin was proved in all direction. Postoperative course and functional results were uneventful. SCPL can be applied in selected cases of locally advanced 74 laryngeal cancer.

  • In-Vessel Retention (IVR) is a key technology to retain the molten core in the reactor vessel during severe accidents of Pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). In order to gain the safety margin of IVR, it is crucial to enhance the critical heat flux (CHF) of the reactor vessel, which is submerged in a water pool. To enhance the CHF, we have designed and additive-manufactured porous grid plates with a 3-D printer for design flexibility. We measured the CHF for the porous grid plate on the boiling heat transfer surface and found that the CHF was enhanced by 50 % more than that of the bare surface. The CHF enhanced more with a narrower grid pitch and a lower grid height. The visual observation study revealed that the vapor film was formed at the bottom of the grid plate.

  • In this paper, the seismic analysis model for seismically isolated KALIMER reactor structures is developed and the modal analysis and the seismic time history analysis are carried out for seismic isolation and non-isolation cases. To check the seismic stress limit according to the ASME Code, the equivalent seismic stress analyses are preformed using the 3-D finite element model. From the seismic stress analysis, the seismic margins are calculated for structural members. The limit of seismic load is defined to show that the maximum input acceleration ensures the structural safety for seismic load. In comparison of seismic responses between seismic isolation and non-isolation cases, the seismic isolation design gives significantly reduced acceleration responses and relative displacements between structures. The seismic margin of KALIMER reactor structure is high enough to produce the limit seismic load 0.8g.

  • Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in many functions. Humans are unable to synthesize vitamin C de novo, because they lack the last enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway. Previous Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for vitamin C were based on prevention of deficiency with a margin of safety. However preventing deficiency may not be equivalent to ideal nutrient intake. Recommendation should be based on vitamin function in relation to concentration. For this goal, data set of the relationship between wide-range of vitamin C dose and resulting concentrations in plasma and tissues and characterization of functional outcomes in relation to these concentrations should be acquired. This article reviews the current knowledge in these areas and suggest how this knowledge may contribute toward establishing dietary guideline for ideal vitamin C intake.

  • APR1400 RVI CVAP using the non-prototype category is being conducted to verify integrity of the RVI design and to secure the CVAP technology. The measurement programs are to confirm vibration analysis results for reactor internals during preoperational and initial startup testing and to detemine the safety margin. One of the important basis for the measurement programs is test acceptance criteria. Therefore, this paper is on establishment of response instrumentation test acceptance criteria for APR1400 RVI CVAP. The established acceptance criteria show that the stress criteria of APR1400 RVI are more conservative values than those of the valid prototype plant(Palo Verde unit 1) and, the displacement criteria of the IBA and the UGS were established to 0.03 in and 0.01 in, respectively.

  • Polymeric suspended insulators for the electric track line have been developed. The main elements to design polymeric insulators are the insulation ability related with materials of FRP core and housing, and the optimal structure related with fitting parts and interface characteristics. To confirm the design fitness of insulator samples the electric field distribution by FEM and mechanical stress distribution by NASTRAN program was analysed with housing shed shapes and fitting structure. The leakage distance and breakage voltage properties which are core parameters to determine electric insulation ability are selected according to the requirement values of user specification, then the power frequency wet withstand voltage was specified above 22kV and the leakage distance was required above 290mm. The contamination condition of the electric track line was the heavy class according to IEC 815 in order to retain the enough safety margin against overvoltages.

  • Structural integrity evaluation is important item in the aircraft certification. Recently, it is designed for limit load, material weakness about fatigue and corrosion, damage by bird strike in flight to evaluate structural integrity of aircraft. And static/fatigue analysis are performed to secure structural integrity, it was verified by static and fatigue tests. To evaluate the structural integrity of small aircraft tail, structural integrity was calculated by the finite element analysis. In the present study, finite element analysis are performed to pick out load cases in flight occurrence, and secure margin of safety to evaluate structural integrity of KC-100 tail unit. The proprieties of finite element analysis results are compared with the static structure test results. The estimation process of structural integrity for small aircraft tail may help the design.

  • External prestressing has been applied to both new construction and retrofitting of existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Continuous beams are preferred to simply supported beams because of economy, fewer movement joints and possible benefits from moment redistribution. However, this paper argues that continuous prestressed concrete beams with external unbonded tendons demonstrate different full-range behaviour compared to reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Applying the same design approach for RC to external prestressing may lead to design with a lower safety margin. To better understand the behaviour of continuous prestressed concrete beams with unbonded tendons, an experimental investigation is performed in which nine such specimens are tested to failure. The full-range behaviour is investigated with reference to moment-curvature relationship and moment redistribution. The amounts of moment redistribution measured in the experiments are compared with those allowed by BS 8110, EC2 and ACI 318. Design equations are also proposed to estimate the curvature ductility index of unbonded prestressed concrete beams.
