  • As the size of data increases, it becomes important to identify properties by analyzing big data. In this paper, we propose a k-Means based efficient clustering technique, called MCSKMeans (Multi centroid set k-Means), using distributed parallel processing framework MapReduce. A problem with the k-Means algorithm is that the accuracy of clustering depends on initial centroids created randomly. To alleviate this problem, the MCSK-Means algorithm reduces the dependency of initial centroids using sets consisting of k centroids. In addition, we apply the agglomerative hierarchical clustering technique for creating k centroids from centroids in m centroid sets which are the results of the clustering phase. In this paper, we implemented our MCSK-Means based on the MapReduce framework for processing big data efficiently.

  • Low-cost microcomputer systems can be assembled which possess computing power, color display, memory, and storage capacity approximately equal to graphic workstactions. A low-cost, flexible, and user-friendly IBM/PC/XT/AT based image processing system has been developed and named as KMIPS(KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology) Map and Image Processing Station). It can be easily utilized by the resource managers who are not computer specialists. This system can: * directly access Landsat MSS and TM, SPOT, NOAA AVHRR, MOS-1 satellite imagery and other imagery from different sources via magnetic tape drive connected with IBM/PC; * extract image up to 1024 line by 1024 column and display it up to 480 line by 672 column with 512 colors simultaneously available; * digitize photographs using a frame grabber subsystem(512 by 512 picture elements); * perform a variety of image analyses, GIS and terrain analyses, and display functions; and * generate map and hard copies to the various scales. All raster data input to the microcomputer system is geographically referenced to the topographic map series in any rater cell size selected by the user. This map oriented, georeferenced approach of this system enables user to create a very accurately registered(.+-.1 picture element), multivariable, multitemporal data sets which can be subsequently subsequently subjected to various analyses and display functions.

  • "Hon-Chon-Jeon-Do" is a woodcut star map with the size of $79.4cm{\times}127.5cm$, and was widely disseminated as it was made into a set with Kim, Jung Ho's "Yeoji-Jeon-Do". This study confirmed that Yixiang kaocheng xubian ("의상고성속편") star catalogue was used as a source to produce the star map, and the stereographic projection was applied with the projection center being the mid-point (Q) between the celestial and ecliptic north poles. The 'mid-circle' around the Q is arisen between the equator and the ecliptic, and on this circle, the hour angle and the ecliptic longitude of a star can be marked using the same scale. This means that the hour of the day and the season of the year can be read on the same dial of the mid-circle, and the application of this character in the practical use was the key point of the star map production. By observing either transits or positions of the 28 xiu (宿), it is easy to find the corresponding season and time by simply reading the dial on the mid-circle. This is just the function of a portable almanac and thus by disseminating it widely, the convenience of the people would have been promoted. For this reason, it can be stated that "Hon-Chon-Jeon-Do" was a practical astronomical tool which was produced by the western astronomical projection method and was used to find time and season. Choi, Han Ki and Kim, Jung Ho are strong candidates for the makers of this star map. The time of production is estimated to be 1848 ~ 1857, and "Hon-Chon-Jeon-Do" could be regarded as a good contributor to popularization of astronomy in the late Joseon Dynasty.

  • Self Organizing Map (SOM) was applied for pattern classification of hydrological and water quality data measured at Jangseong Reservoir on a monthly basis. The primary objective of the present study is to understand better data characteristics and relationship between the data. For the purpose, two SOMs were configured by a methodologically systematic approach with appropriate methods for data transformation, determination of map size and side lengths of the map. The SOMs constructed at the respective measurement stations for water quality data (JSD1 and JSD2) commonly classified the respective datasets into five clusters by Davies-Bouldin Index (DBI). The trained SOMs were fine-tuned by Ward's method of a hierarchical cluster analysis. On the one hand, the patterns with high values of standardized reference vectors for hydrological variables revealed the high possibility of eutrophication by TN or TP in the reservoir, in general. On the other hand, the clusters with low values of standardized reference vectors for hydrological variables showed the patterns with high COD concentration. In particular, Clsuter1 at JSD1 and Cluster5 at JSD2 represented the worst condition of water quality with high reference vectors for rainfall and storage in the reservoir. Consequently, SOM is applicable to identify the patterns of potential eutrophication in reservoirs according to the better understanding of data characteristics and their relationship.

  • Very-early strength latex-modified concrete(below ; VES-LMC) was developed for possible early-opening-to-traffic after overlay of bridge deck concrete. The purpose of this study is to analyze the cause of map, transverse and longitudinal cracking in VES-LMC and to provide a control method for minimizing occurrence of cracking. The proposed prevention method against map and transverse cracking was verified by field data. VES cement was modified as the unit cement content was reduced from 390kg/$m^3$ to 360kg/$m^3$. The maximum size of coarse aggregate was increased from 13mm to 19mm. The wire mesh and steel fiber were adopted in concrete mixture. From the results, the proposed prevention method against map and transverse cracking was verified since structural cracking was not occurred until 3 years after overlay.

  • Numerical method of nonlinear regression was introduced to characterize grain-size distribution more effectively than using the traditional textural parameters. This technique proved critical particularly to multimodal size distributions, as exemplified by samples from Cheju strait continental shelf. Grain-size analysis of samples collected from the Cheju Strait continental shelf reveals that 86% of the grain-size distributions are multimodal. As multimodal grain-size distribution deviates from the statistical (log) normal distribution, the grain-size parameters traditionally used in sediment studies do not describe the distribution efficiently. Therefore, the use of grain-size curves into elementary normal component curves was used. Means and standard deviations of 387 decomposed normal components were decided by a decomposition method (nonlinear least square regression) from 167 size curves of the Cheju Strait sediments. The mean values of decomposed normal components show peaks at 1-3 phi and 8-9 phi size classes. The plot of mean values of the coarse fraction normal components on the map shows a characteristic and complex areal distribution. On the basis of the areal distribution of the mean values of the components and that of isopach of total Plenipotence sediment, the areal distribution of layers composing a transgressive sand of Late Plenipotence age were revealed.

  • A numerical method based on genetic algorithms was introduced to characterize the grain-size distribution more effectively. This technique was proved significant particularly for multimodal size distributions, as was verified for samples from Korea Strait continental shelf. Sediment samples collected from the Korea Strait continental shelf revealed that $96\%$ of the grain-size distributions were multimodal. Therefore, the use of grain-size parameters was not the ideal method. As an alternative method, the decomposition of sue curves into elementary normal component curves was used. Means and standard deviations of 593 decomposed normal components were calculated by a numerical method from 268 size curves of Korea Strait sediments. The mean values of decomposed normal components showed peaks at $1\~3\phi\;and\;7\~9\phi$ size classes. The plot of mean and standard deviation values of the coarse fraction normal components on the map showed a characteristic areal distribution. The characteristic distribution was found to derive from underlying Pleistocene sediment on the basis of sea bottom geologic distribution of the area. The method of decomposition into normal components was found to be more effective than the analysis using traditional grain-size parameters in investigation of multimodal size distribution of Korea Strait shelf sediment.

  • It is very important for early diagnosis and therapy with ischamic cerebral infarction patients. This study was to know the ischemic penumbra lesion which compared CT-perfusion and diffusion weighted MRI(DWMRI) with acute cerebral infarction patients. 12 acute cerebral infarction patients had performed perfusion CT and performed DWMRI. Perfusion images including cerebral blood volume(CBV), cerebral blood flow(CBF), time to peak(TTP) and mean transit time(MTT) maps obtained the values with defect lesion and contralateral normal cerebral hemisphere and DWMRI was measured by signal intensity and compared of lesion size between each perfusion map. All perfusion CT maps showed the perfusion defect lesions in all patients. There were remarkable TTP and MTT delay in perfusion defect lesions. The lesions on CBF map was the most closely correlated with the lesions on DWMRI. The size of perfusion defect lesions on TTP and MTT map was larger than that of lesions on DWMRI, suggesting that MTT map can evaluate the ischemic penumbra. Perfusion CT maps make it possible to evaluate not only ischemic core and ischemic penumbra, but also hemodynamic status in the perfusion defect area. These results demonstrate that perfusion CT can be useful to the diagnosis and treatment in the patients with acute cerebral ischemic infarction.

  • This research selected Daegu Metropolitan City representing a combination of natural space and urban space for this case study. To achieve this, a prerequisite was to set up an optimal block size to evaluate landscape diversity of the research site by using a RPR-Area Curve. Further, landscape diversity evaluation was conducted based on land cover map by using FRAGSTATS to analyze spatio-temporal changes. Notably, this research regarded it as the most significant to set forth criteria in order to apply landscape diversity to the development plans of the newtown and outskirt of a city under high pressure development. Results derived from this research are summarized as follows. According to the results derived from establishing the optimal block size, a size about $2km^2$ was analyzed to measure landscape diversity of the research site. Also, according to the results derived from land diversity evaluation based on land cover map, land diversity was highly measured around urban stream such as Nakdong River and Geumho River, and in particular, the value of landscape diversity was measured considerably high around the urban parks. Results derived from analysis on spatio-temporal changes of land diversity demonstrated that a certain level of urban development exerted a positive effect on an increase in land diversity, but consistent urban development lowered a value of landscape diversity. Results derived from regression analysis to set forth the optimal urban space showed that an urban area of a space about $2km^2$ exerted a positive effect at a rate of about 0~43.3% and a negative effect at a rate about 43.3~100%. In conclusion, the results of this research are considered to provide important basic data for future urban and landscape planning. Nonetheless, as only the layout on the 2D plane was analyzed in this research, further research in future is required to complexly consider diverse factors such as height of structure and change in visible real area arising from geographical features.

  • Model for optimally dimensioned PE film bag was developed according to fruit size to maintain best quality of 'Fuyu' persimmon in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) storage based on relationship between quality and oxygen and carbon dioxide in PE film bag. Harvested persimmons were graded into five sizes, and average weights were LL:261, L:217, M:188, S:168, and SS:154 g. Five fruit units of each grade were optimized in five PE film bag sizes of $150{\times}376,\;140{\times}357,\;130{\times}344,\;130{\times}333,\;and\;120{\times}3l8\;mm$. To minimize quality deterioration such as softening and discoloration, optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations in PE film bag were 0.5-1.0 and 6.0-8.0%, respectively, and optimal thickness of PE film bag according to fruit size were LL:45, L:50, M:55, S:60, and $SS:65\;{\mu}m$. For all fruit sizes, model for PE film bag area $(mm^2)$ was good quadratic simple equation by fruit weight (g): $Y=-4055.707+627.993X_1-0.701{X_1}^2$. Model far optimal oxygen and carbon dioxide (Y) concentration in PE film bag was suited to linear multiple equation by fruit weight $(X_1,\;g)$ and PE film thickness $(X_2,\;{\mu}m)$. Equations for oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations (%) were $Y=5.798-0.0109X_l-0.0491X_2\;and\;Y=-2.427+0.01927X_l +0.09646X_2$, respectively.
