  • The equipment of industrial robot in manufacturing and assembly lines has rapidly increased. In order to achieve high productivity and flexibility, it becomes very important to develop the visual feedback control system with Off-Line Programming System(OLPS). We can save much efforts and time in adjusting robots to newly defined workcells by using Off-Line Programming System. A proposed visual calibration scheme is based on position-based visual feedback. The visual calibration system is composed of a personal computer, an image processing board, a video monitor, and one camera. The calibration program firstly generates predicted images of objects in an assumed end-effector position. The process to generate predicted images consists of projection to screen-coordinates, visible range test, and construction of simple silhouette figures. Then, camera images acquired are compared with predicted ones for updating position and orientation data. Computation of error is very simple because the scheme is based on perspective projection, which can be also expanded to experimental results. Computation time can be extremely reduced because the proposed method does not require the precise calculation of tree-dimensional object data and image Jacobian.

  • With a remarkable expansion of communication industry, a pager or a cellular phone becomes a necessary communication device in modern society. However, a paging signal by a buzzer is often acted as an unpleasant noise in some places, thus necessitating a paging signal by a vibration motor. In this paper, a simpler type of a vibration motor, a coreless permanent magnet(PM) DC motor, is considered to substitute for the conventional vibration motors. Using an analytical method, electromagnetic field and operating torque were calculated for the given inner and outer PM type motors, and the results were confirmed by FEM analysis. As design parameters, number of PM poles, PM radial thickness, coil arc angle and number of winding stacks were chosen for sensitivity analysis. It shows that coil arc angle is the most important design parameter to increase the motor performance, without giving an adverse effect on motor weight, size and manufacturing cost. Based on the analysis of the outer PM type motor, an outer square PM type motor is proposed as the final design. Compared to the outer PM type, outer square type provides more flexibility to attach to the small size cellular phones. With the optimum design of square outer PM DC motor, it can successfully substitute the conventional types with less expensive manufacturing cost. better performance and smaller necessary space.

  • In recent manufacturing systems, most jobs may have several process plans, such as alternative sequence of operations, alternative machine etc. A few researches have addressed the necessity for the integration of process planning and scheduling function for efficient use of manufacturing resources. But the integration problem is very difficult and complex. Many prior researches considered them separately or sequentially. It introduces overlapping or partial duplications in solution efforts. In this paper, Integration problem of jobs with multiple process plans in a job shop environment Is addressed. In order to achieve an efficient integration between process planning and scheduling by taking advantage of the flexibility that alternative process plans offer, we designed GA(Genetic Algorithm)-based scheduling method. The performance of proposed GA is evaluated through comparing integrated scheduling with separated scheduling in real world company with alternative machines and sequences of operations. Also, a couple of benchmark problems are used to evaluate performance. The integrated scheduling method in this research can be effectively epplied to the real case.

  • The vertical lathe is a very popular machine tool in modem manufacturing industries because of its small area of installation. The small installation area is highly desirable for the flexibility improvement of the manufacturing systems such as FMS, CIM, and IMS. The vertical lathe, however, has much taller height compared to the traditional horizontal lathe, and consequently more severe vibrations. In this study, the structure of a vertical lathe is analyzed to investigate the dynamic properties and further to establish some ideas of the design alteration for the improved dynamic stability even at the higher operating speed. The simulation model is implemented to apply those design alterations for the optimization. The result of this study is not only prosperous but also ready to be applied to the optimum design of various machine tool structures for the improved stability.

  • In this study, we introduce a yellowing phenomenon in silver nanowire laser patterning and attempt to understand the cause of this phenomenon. Silver nanowire is a promising alternative to indium tin oxide as a transparent electrode owing to its flexibility. Additionally, silver nanowire can be easily patterned by laser ablation, which is free of dangerous chemicals. However, a yellowish color change reducing visibility is observed on the patterned area of the silver nanowires, and this yellowing phenomenon prevents the use of silver nanowire as a transparent electrode material. We concluded that resolidified debris of melted and evaporated silver nanowires after laser ablation causes the color change of the electrode. Further research is needed to determine a means of mitigating this yellowing phenomenon.

  • For several years, graduate students and faculty of the Engineering Systems Research Center at U.C., Berkeley have been studying new methods of planning and scheduling in a computer integrated manufacturing environment, with particular emphasis on large scale integrated circuit fabrication. One part of this work, focusing on short interval scheduling, uses simulation models as a primary research tool. We have built two versions of the same basic model (programmed in C) to study two different problems (one deals with machine down time and the other with setup times). These have proven to be efficient for studying particular problems, but are difficult and time consuming to modify. We are convinced that our research will be more effective: (1) if it were easier to build special purpose models tailored to the research question at hand; and (2) if we had better interfaces to graphics output. Commercially available factory simulators are inadequate for this research for a variety of reasons. Existing packages such as SIMKIT, SLAM, SIMAN and EXCELL have their own weaknesses. Typically, they are hard to develop and to modify. They do not allow for adding new dispatching decisions or release decision. Also, it is hard to add more machines to existing environment or change the route the product flows. For these various reasons, we had developed a new simulation package having flexibility and modularity. In this paper, based on experiences gained in the application of object oriented programming, we discuss unique features of the simulator developed in OOPS and ways to take advantage of features in developing and using manufacturing simulation software written in the OOPS

  • Recent trend of popularity of CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) tools and its availability, partly contributed by significant price reduction of H/W and SW, makes us believe CAE has already established terra firma as de jure tools, enablint the design improvement in the manufacturing am. However, if your jobs are required to be working closely with engineers located in the front line of manufacturing site, CAE is observed far from popularity, still being regarded as exclusive tools for engineers holding advanced degrees. Conventional methodologies depending on knowledge that was accumulated thorough trial and errors, depending primarily on engineering tables and formulas or proprietary know-how, are preferred as the de factor standard under the roof of contemporary development shops. Samsung camera, having stared its business since early 、80, has accumulated enough technological strength to compete in the world market. As today's consumers demand more sophisticated featured-lighter weight, built-in multi zoom and miniature size fitting in the palm-from camera manufacturer, so should Samsung camera respond to ever-delicate consumer's needs with great flexibility. Consequently conventional designers, without sophisticated analytical tools, with encounter solving the critical design factors that have never been treated as seriousness-marginal safety factors induced by reduced size of parts. In the study, CAE results of boss and gears were demonstrated as examples, which confirms the facts that the simple analysis done by front line designers, can bring distinguishable effects on the potential improvements of design and on the consequential influences on the future design process-simulation before actual tooling and productions.

  • A flexible assembly line (FAL) is a production system that assembles various parts in unidirectional flow line with many constraints and manufacturing flexibilities. In this research we deal with a FAL balancing problem with the objective of minimizing the maximum workload allocated to the stations. However, almost all the existing researches do not appropriately consider various constraints due to the problem complexity. Therefore, this study addresses a balancing problem of FAL with many constraints and manufacturing flexibilities, unlike the previous researches. We use a genetic algorithm (GA) to solve this problem. To apply GA to FAL. we suggest a genetic representation suitable for FAL balancing and devise evaluation method for individual's fitness and genetic operators specific to the problem, including efficient repair method for preserving solution feasibility. After we obtain a solution using the proposed GA. we use a heuristic method for reassigning some tasks of each product to one or more stations. This method can improve workload smoothness and raise work efficiency of each station. The proposed algorithm is compared and analyzed in terms of solution quality through computational experiments.

  • Demands for automation in the cell production process of IT products are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In particular, the dual-arm robot has drawn attention as a solution because it has a flexibility and works similarly to humans. In this paper, we propose an automation system for cellular phone packing processes using two dual-arm robots. Applied robots are designed with specifications to meet the requirements of cellular phone packing jobs. In addition, a robotic cell production system is proposed by applying a method of task allocation for efficient packing of cellular phones. Specifically, a task is assigned to reduce takt-time and to avoid collision between two robots. Finally, we discuss some experimental results that include the packing job of five unit boxes with seven kinds of accessories.
