The effects of internal manifold designs on the reactants feed-stream in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells [PEFCs] is studied to figure out flow and thermal distribution patterns over an entire fuel cell stack. Reactants flows are modeled either laminar of turbulent depending on regions and the open channels in the bipolar plates are simulated by porous media where permeability should be pre-deter-mined for computational analysis. In this work, numerical models for reactants feed-stream In the PEFC manifolds are classified Into two major flow patterns: Z-shape and U-shape. Several types of manifold geometries are analyzed to find the optimal manifold configurations. The effect of heat generation in PEFC on the flow distribution is also Investigated applying a simplified heat transfer model in the stack level (i.e. multi-cell electrochemical power-generation unit). This modeling technique Is well suited for many large scale problems and this scheme can be used not only to account for the manifold flow pattern but also to obtain Information on the optimal design and operation of PEFC systems.

The flow in the LOX manifold of liquid rocket has been investigated using a CAE technique with an objective of economical modeling of injection holes in order to reduce the overall computational cost of flow analysis during the optimal rocket design procedure. The computational geometry is very close to that of the actual rocket design and the flow condition through the injection holes resembles that in the actual manifold of the liquid rocket. The result shows that the flow in the plane just above the injection holes is not uniformly distributed in terms of pressure and mass flow rate and this is attributed to the large-scale flow patterns present the LOX manifold. Thus, the flow physics should be understood correctly before making any attempt to model the injection holes. In the present study, several boundary conditions which were designed to effectively replace the presence of injection holes have been tested and it was found that a simple modeling can be possible by mimicking the actual geometry of the injection holes. By using this simple injection hole modeling, it was able to obtain about 30% reduction in computational cost but it was still able to reproduce the flow patterns correctly. Also the flow has been analyzed after incorporating a couple of different types of pre-distributors in LOX manifold and the effect of those will be discussed.

This paper presents the design technique of output multiplexer(OMUX) for the Ka-band satellite transponder. Output multiplexer consists of low-pass filter(LPF), channel filter and manifold. Channel filters adopt dual-mode technique in design for mass and volume reduction and frequency response of channel filters is 4-pole elliptic response for high frequency selectivity. w-pass filters are designed to be of 13th order corrugated type for high rejection characteristic over reception band of satellite transponder. After initial design of channel filters and manifold, we optimized only a few design parameters for fast and easy optimization instead of optimizing all the design parameter. Measured results of a realized output umltiplexer for Ka-band satellite transponder show good agreement with the computed ones.
The Performance of a PEMFC stack is strongly dependent on the uniform reactants distribution on MEA. The uniform distribution can be achieved by flow-field pattern and manifold design optimized to satisfy operating conditions. This paper investigates uniform reactants distribution in channels by changing manifold shape and inlet mass flow rate. Typical U and Z shape and modified U and Z shape manifolds with buffer zone were designed. To check the uniform reactants distribution, standard deviation of mass flow rate was compared. The numerical results show that the inlet mass flow rate, inlet shape, and manifolds shape are critical factor for uniform distribution.

In this paper, a computer program for simulation of 4 cycle diesel engines including intake and exhaust manifold system is developed. The wave action theory is applied for optimization of the intake and exhaust manifold system. The calculation results of this computer program is finely accurate and agreed well with experimental results. Accordingly, it is recognized that the developed computer program can be utillized very usefully for the design of intake and manifold system. And then, influential factors of the engine performance in the design of intake manifold is numerically investigated by the calculation only. As the results it is concluded that the inertia one of the dynamic effects on the intake and exhaust maninfold affects mainly the engine performance and the pulsation one is a side effect.
The aim of this study is to present the design methods about manifold location being installed and size and to draw out the proper piping size as comparing the fluctuation of discharge with manifold size and residence size through the piping network analysis, when using the same faucet in accordance. The findings are summarized as follows, 1) an appropriate header main body pipe diameter was deemed to be $32{\sim}50\;mm$. 2) the research presented design measures for the application of appropriate water supply inlet pipe diameters according to residential buildings with various sizes. 3) the header direct branch piping method is ideal for small and medium-sized residential complexes, and the header branching and semi header methods are deemed to be more favorable for large residential complexes. 4) this study offered design measures for appropriate header system main body pipe diameters, water supply inlet pipe diameters, header system piping methods, application methods for functional auxiliary equipment units, and header system installation spaces and location.

This paper describes an efficient solid modeling method for thin-walled plastic or sheet metal parts, based on the non-manifold offsetting operations. Since the previous methods for modeling and converting a sheet into a solid have adopted the boundary representations for solid object as their topological framework, it is difficult to represent the exact adjacency relationship between topological entities of a sheet model and a mixture of wireframe and sheet models that can appear in the meantime of modeling procedure, and it is hard to implement topological operations for sheet modeling and transformation of a sheet into a solid. To solve these problems, we introduce a non-manifold B-rep and propose a sheet conversion method based on a non-manifold offset algorithm. Because the non-manifold offset aigorithm based on mathematical definitions results in an offset solid with tubular and spherical thickness-faces we modify it to generate the ruled or planar thickness-faces that are mostly shown in actual plastic or sheet metal parts. In addition, in order to accelerate the Boolean operations used the offset algorithm, we also develope an efficient face-face intersection algorithm using topological adjacency information.

The manifold designates a pipe system discharging or absorbing water through multiple holes installed along the finite length of the pipe. The proper design of the manifold requires the pre-analysis of the hydraulic characteristics such as system head and flow rate. head loss and hole discharges, etc. On the contrary to the general pipe systems. the head loss along the pipe is hardly quantified in an explicit way since it is complicately varied by the size and arrangement of the holes. In the present study, both energy and continuity equations are employed to analyze the hydraulic characteristics, constituting nonlinear simultaneous equations which are solved by Newton method. In addition, a hydraulic experiment utilizing the manifold system equipped with an automatically controlled valve is performed to reproduce model tide. The result shows that the manifold system can be effectively used in a tidal basin where water flow should be maintained uniformly over the basin width.
In recent year, as the current and future emission regulations go stringent, the research of exhaust manifold and CCC has become the subject of increasing interest and attention. This study is concerned with the systematic approach to improve catalyst flow uniformity and light-off behavior through the basic understanding of exhaust flow characteristics. Computational approach to the unsteady compressible flow for exhaust manifold of 4-1 type and 4-2-1 type and CCC system of a 4-cylinder DOHC gasoline engine was performed to investigate the flow distribution of exhaust gases. In this study, through calculation, the effects of geometric configuration of exhaust manifold on flow structure and its maldistribution in monolith were mainly investigated to understand the exhaust flow patterns in terms of flow uniformity. Based on the design guidance resulting from this fundamental study, the flow uniformity of 4-2-1 type exhaust manifold demonstrated the more improved exhaust characteristics than that of the 4-1 type one.
Butyl rubber is used as an adhesive and it is mainly used in the form of sheets. The goal of this study is to design an extrusion die for the butyl rubber sheets using computer simulation. The extrusion die for the butylrubber sheets consists of manifold area and land area. In the manifold area, flows are spread from the entrance of the extrusion die to the land area. In the land area, flows become stable to the flow direction and uniform sheet can be obtained. Island area is being installed in the land area to get uniform flow. Four parameters, angle of manifold, length of manifold, length of land and island, were examined in the computer simulation. The optimum geometry of the extrusion die is derived which has a uniform flow in the width direction of the die.
