  • Birnessite, pyrolusite and hausmannite were synthesized and tested for the ability to oxidize Cr(III) to Cr(VI). These oxides differed in zero point of charge, surface area, and crystallinity. The kinetic study showed that Cr(III) oxidation on the Mn-oxide surface is a first-order reaction. The reaction rate was various for different oxide at different conditions. Generally the reaction by hausmannite, containing Mn(III), was faster than the others, and oxidation by pyrolusite was much slower. Solution pH and initial Cr(III) concentration had a significant effect on the reaction. Inhibited oxidation at higher pH and initial Cr(III) concentration could be due to the chance of Cr(III) precipitation or complexing on the oxide surface. Oxidations by birnessite and hausmannite were faster at lower pH, but pyrolusite exhibited increased oxidation capacity at higher pH in the range between 3.0 and 5.0. Reactions were also temperature sensitive. Although calculated activation energies for the oxidation reactions at pH 3.0 were higher than the general activation energy for diffusion, there is no experimental evidence to suggest which reaction is the rate limiting step.

  • In order to investigate harmful trace in commercial teaproducts. The contents of copper, lead, cadmium, zinc, chromium, manganese and iron were studied in this paper. The samples studied were Youlmoo tea(7) Arrow root tea(9) Ginger tea(4) collected from markets in Seoul area and analysis of seven metals by means of Automic absorption spectrometry. The results obtained were as follows : Lead contents is ranged from 0.06 to 0.72 ppm, cadmium from ND to 0.17 ppm, copper from 0.8 to 16.7 ppm, zinc from 10.4 to 40.4 ppm, manganess from 2.7 to 16.5 ppm, chromium from 0.04 to 4.7 ppm, iron from 7.9 to 55.7 ppm.

  • There are many reservoirs used as the source of water supply and they show various specific characteristics in water quality depend seasonal. Especially, there were not a little variations of water quality in summer, as a natural consequence it follows that stratification occured phenomenon and changed anaerobic condition in the bottom of reservoir, and then accumulated Fe and Mn substance in soil and sediment were resolved into water, it attributes to coloration. G purification plant located in Y gun is very small plant in which coloration occurs by Fe and Mn in every summer. Using this plant as a model, the removal methods of Fe and Mn were studied. After prechlorination plus LAS coagulation, Fe, Mn, $NH_3-N$ were decreased from 7.290 mg/l to 0.080 mg/l, from 0.480 mg/l to 0.075 mg/l, from 0.55 mg/l to 0.04 mg/l. But $THM_{s}$ was increased from 0.050 mg/l to 0.044 mg/l. It shows that the prechlorination plus LAS coagulation treatment process in purification plant is effective to remove Fe and Mn ion.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the zinc deficiency of rice plant grown on Boeun soil of Korea and on Batangas soil of the philippines. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Batangas soil was deficient in zinc because of the high pH, high organic matter and high calcium. Zinc content of the rice plant grown on Batangas soil was l6ppm. On the other hand, Boeun soil had low organic matter. Zinc content of the rice plant grown on Boeun soil was 33ppm. 2. The top leaf had higher zinc content than any other leaves. Zinc deficiency apparently occured when the zinc content of the rice plant was below 18ppm. 3. The physiologically acid fertilizer such as ammonium sulfate was more advantageous in improving zinc up take than the urea. 4. The zine deficiency was promoted when the Mn/Zn ratio is high, and zinc and manganess interact antagonistically in the growth of rice plant. 5. The zinc deficiency could be overcome by applying zinc chloride and fritted Trace elements to the Batangas soil, and the yield was significantly increased than conrtol.
