Objective: To compare condylar position and morphology among different vertical skeletal patterns. Methods: Diagnostic cone-beam computed tomography images of 60 adult patients (120 temporomandibular joints) who visited the orthodontic clinic of Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital were reviewed. The subjects were divided into three equal groups according to the mandibular plane angle: hypodivergent, normodivergent, and hyperdivergent groups. Morphology of the condyle and mandibular fossa and condylar position were compared among the groups. Results: The hypodivergent and hyperdivergent groups showed significant differences in superior joint spaces, antero-posterior condyle width, medio-lateral condyle width, condyle head angle, and condylar shapes. Conclusions: Condylar position and morphology vary according to vertical facial morphology. This relationship should be considered for predicting and establishing a proper treatment plan for temporomandibular diseases during orthodontic treatment.
This study was performed to evaluate the hyoid bone position and airway in skeletal class III malocclusion and to prove the correlation between airway, hyoid bone position and mandibular position. The sample, considered of 47 class III malocclusion patients for experimmtal group and 52 class I malocclusion students for control group. Twenty three linear and angular measurements about hyoid bone position, airway size, mandibular position were taken from the lateral cephalograms. The differences between skeletal class III malocclusion group and normal occlusion group were compared and the correlation were evaluated statistically. The results obtained were as follows, 1. There were significant difference in S-APH, A-APH, N-APH, LAH-PBR, AA-PNS, PNS-ad between class I and class III malocclusion groups. 2. The hyoid bone was more anteriorly positioned in class III malocclusion group than class I malocclusion group and skeletal airway size in class III malocclusion group was smaller than class I malocclusion group. 3. There were significant difference in several measurements especially vertical and angular measurements of hyoid bone position and airway size between male and female. Usually the measurements in male were larger than female. 4. There were no significant correlation between hyoid bone position and airway size also airway size, and didn't showe significant correlation with mandibular position, 5. S-APH showed negative correlation with Wits appraisal and A-APH, N-APH showed positive correlation with Wits appraisal. On the contrary vertical measurements of hyoid bone position showed positive correlation with lower facial height.

The mandibular canal must be considered carefully during the surgical treatment, especially surgical extraction of the impacted tooth and intraosseous implant, because it contains the important inferior alveolar nerve and vessels. The author investigated the curvature of the mandibular canal and its relation to the mandibular molars and positional realtion between the mental foramen and the mandibular premelors in orthopantomogram. The materials consisted of 441 orthopantomograms divided four groups; Group Ⅰ consisted of 56 males and 44 females from 1 to 6 years of age, Group Ⅱ consisted of 58 males and 45 females from 7 to 12 years of age, Group Ⅲ consisted of 65 males and 33 females from 13 to 18 years of age, Group Ⅳ consisted of 86 males and 54 females over 19 years of age. The results were as followings; 1. The curvature of mandibular canal was 144.50° in Group Ⅰ, 144. 29° in Group Ⅱ, 148.11° in Group Ⅲ, 147.33° in Group Ⅳ. 2. The curvature of mandibular canal was located most frequently on the area between mandibular 1st molar and mandibular 2nd molar in Group Ⅰ (42%) and on the mandibular 2nd molar area in Group Ⅱ (54%), Group Ⅲ (59%), Group Ⅳ (53%). 3. The position of mental foramen was most frequently below the mandibular 1st premolar in Group Ⅰ (58%), between the mandibular 1st premolar and the 2nd premolar in Group Ⅱ (62%), Group Ⅲ (47%), and below the mandibular 2nd premolar in Group Ⅳ (58%).
In order to obtain the basic data for diagnosis of occlusion the author investigated the occlusal sounds produced by mandibular closing movement from rest position to centric occlusion by using the Korotkoff sounds microphone electrodes and physiograph for Korean 20S without TMJ problems. And the author analyzed the correlation of the occlusal sounds with height, body weight, mandibular closing movement distance, maxillary sinus size and masseter muscle activities relating to the production of occlusal sounds. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The occlusal sounds prouduced by mandibular closing movements from rest position to centric occlusion were ranged from 3.08mV to 52.00mV, their maen value 19.07mV in right side, and ranged from 2.41mV to 18.33mV, their mean value 9.19mV in left side in group of Angel's class I occlusion subjects having right habitual side of mastication. 2. In general the occlusal sounds in the habitual side of mastication were greater than those in the opposite side. 3. The correlations of the occlusal sounds with height and maxillary sinus size were not significant. 4. The correaltions of the occlusal sounds with body weight, mandibular closing movement distance and masster muscle activities were significant.

The Author measured the position of the mandibular foramen with oblique cephalography in 43 5-aged, and 44 7-aged Korean children. The results of the studies were as follows; 1) The distance from the post. occlusal plane to the mandibular foramen was $3.16{\pm}1.22mm$. in age 5 and $1.86{\pm}1.50mm$. in age7 to the below. 2) The meeting point of the occlusal plane and anterior of the ramus to the mandibular foramen was $16.56{\pm}2.18mm$. in age5 and $16.88{\pm}2.69mm$. in age7. 3) The angulation between the occlusal plane and the line connecting the mandibular foramen and the meeting point of anterior border of the ramus with occlusal plane was $12.70{\pm}4.31^{\circ}$ in age5 and $8.27{\pm}5.36^{\circ}$ in age7 to the below. 4) % depth was $56.93{\pm}5.65%$ in age 5 and $53.20{\pm}7.12%$ in age 7. 5) The price of distance and angulation showed significant results at 0.01 level in KOLMOGOROV-SMIRNOV (TWO-SAMPLE) TEST.
The primary objective of this study was to define the differences that exist. between different sexes on the dentoskeletal framework and the soft tissue profile around the mouth. For the purpose of this study, cephalometric radiographs were obtained from the centric occlusion with closed lip position, through the research on each 42 males and females aged from 17 to 22 years with normal occlusion and acceptable facial appearence. The results were as follows: 1. Maxillary to mandibular relationships. Among the angles formed by the long axis of the maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, the maxillary and mandibular anterior alveolar bone, and the lower and upper lips (Fig.2), only the angle formed by the lips was more acute in males than in females. The males have a more rounded profile, and the females have a flatter profile in the lower third of the face. The differences is statistically significant for the angle formed by the lips. The fact that the lips have a difference greater than that of teeth or the alveolar bone indicates that the lip position is not entirely due to tooth and bony support. Possibly the thickness of the lips has an influence. 2. Occlusal plane. The occlusal plane was related to the anterior tooth inclination, anterior alveolar bone profile, and the lip contour, both maxillary and mandibular (Fig.3). Only the angle related to lower lip was statistically significant. The females again had the more obtuse angle, indicating a flatter profile than that of the males. 3.Skeletal planes. The angles formed by the anterior maxillary lips, teeth, and alveolar bone with the Frankfort plane and the angles of the mandibular lips, teeth, and, alveolar bone and the mandibular plane were investigated (Fig.4). Results were similar to those from maxillary to mandibular relationships. The results were statistically significant for the upper lip and the lower lip, only. 4. Esthetics. The facial line and the mandibular plane were compared with the esthetic line. These angles were different for the different sexes, but only the latter was statistically significant. This difference may be due to the profile contour of the nose.
Purpose: In this study, we analyzed and compared the anatomical position of the mandibular canal in normal occlusion and mandibular prognathism patients. Patients and Methods: Computed tomography image from 58 patients were divided into normal occlusion group and mandibular prognathism group, and each measurement were taken in the each measuring points(2nd premolar, 1st molar, 2nd molar, 3rd molar, ramus). Measurements were statistically analyzed by student's t-test. Results: BC (Thickness of the buccal cortex) value was 2.3~2.7 mm, CB (Distance from the canal to the lingual aspect of the buccal cortex) value was 1.3~4.3 mm, MC (Diameter of the canal) value was 3.2~3.8 mm, LI (Distance from the canal to the lingual aspect of the lingual cortex) value was 2.0~3.7 mm, TM (Thickness of the total mandible) value was 9.5~12.9 mm and CM (Distance from the canal to the inferior border of the mandible) value was 6.9~17.5 mm. Conclusion: In the comparison between two groups, there was statistically significant difference in CB value of 2nd, 3rd molar between normal occlusion and mandibular prognathism, and other value in the rest of the measuring points didn't show statistically significant difference.
Objective: To compare the positions of the mandibular premolars in Angle Class I subjects according to vertical facial type. The results will provide a theoretical basis for predicting effective tooth movement in orthodontic treatment. Methods: Cephalometric parameters were determined using cone-beam computed tomography in 120 Angle Class I subjects. Subjects were categorized as short, normal, and long face types according to the Frankfort mandibular angle. Parameters indicating the position of the mandibular right premolars and the mandible were also measured. Results: The angle between the mandibular first premolar axis and buccal cortex, the distance between the root apex and buccal cortex, angle of vestibularization, arc of vestibularization, and root apex maximum movable distance were significantly greater in the short face type than in the long and norm face types. The angle between the mandibular second premolar axis and buccal cortex, the distance from root apex to buccal cortex, and the arc of vestibularization were significantly greater in the short face type than in the normal face type. Conclusions: There are significant differences in the mandibular premolar positions in Class I subjects according to vertical facial type.

Objective: This retrospective study evaluated the mandibular condyle position before and after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery performed with the mandibular condyle positioned manually in patients with mandibular prognathism using cone-beam computed tomography. Methods: Overall, 88 mandibular condyles from 44 adult patients (20 female and 24 male) diagnosed with mandibular prognathism due to skeletal Class III malocclusion who underwent bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) and Le Fort I performed using the manual condyle positioning method were included. Cone-beam computed tomography images obtained 1-2 weeks before (T0) and approximately 6 months after (T1) surgery were analyzed in three planes using 3D Slicer software. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05 level. Results: Significant inward rotation of the left mandibular condyle and significant outward rotation of the right mandibular condyle were observed in the axial and coronal planes (P < 0.05). The positions of the right and left condyles in the sagittal plane and the distance between the most medial points of the condyles in the coronal plane did not differ significantly (P > 0.05). Conclusions: While the change in the sagittal plane can be maintained as before surgery with manual positioning during the BSSRO procedure, significant inward and outward rotation was observed in the axial and coronal planes, respectively, even in the absence of concomitant temporomandibular joint disorder before or after the operation. Further long-term studies are needed to correlate these findings with possible clinical consequences.
The authors have measured and analyzed the values of Point C from roentgenocephalograms of Korean adults, 51 males and 53 females, with normal occlusion. The results were as follows. 1. The position of Point C was -4.73mm. in male and -4.74mm. in female. 2. In samples of harmonious maxillary and mandibular basal bones, the position of Point C was -4.02mm. in male, while that was -5.33mm. in female, respectively. 3. When N.F.-M.P.A. was become larger, the position of Point C was moved more upward; while M.R.P. was increased larger, it was moved more downward. 4. The position of Point C was depended on the distance form the cross point with nasal floor and mandibular plane to the points A and B.
