To compare the vitality among cool-season turfgrasses under summer weather conditions and to obtain information to improve the management of turfgrasses in golf courses and sports fields., the chlorophyll fluorescence of three cool-season turfgrasses commonly planted on golf courses in the Jeju area was measured. The turfgrasses were perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.), and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). In perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass, the chlorophyll index was low in early summer and high in late summer. In creeping bentgrass, it remained low throughout the study. Fo tended to be low in the early summer and high in late summer in the three turfgrasses. However, the difference in Fo between late summer and early summer was markedly higher in perennial ryegrass than in Kentucky bluegrass or creeping bentgrass. Fm tended to be low in early summer and high in late summer, without obvious differences among the three turfgrasses. Fv/Fm, a measure of photochemical efficiency, was also low in early summer and high in late summer in the three turfgrasses. However, Fv/Fm in late summer was mostly higher in Kentucky bluegrass and creeping bentgrass than in perennial ryegrass, indicating that the former are more resistant to the high temperature and humidity of late summer. Furthermore, Kentucky bluegrass had a high chlorophyll index in late summer and would be most resistant to the harsh conditions of late summer.
This study was conducted to effect a complex fertilizer treatment on a recovery of damaged turfgrass caused by competing with tree at area under trees, and to seek for effective management system on damaged areas under trees in golf courses. Available phosphorous and potassium were enough to grow up turfgrass in plots of East valley and Ji San Golf Club. But these plots were acid soil ranged from pH 5.3 to pH 5.5, so that lime fertilizer was required for improving the chemical of soil. The effect on complex fertilizer showed significant f3r the recovery of damaged turfgrass. Turfgrass recovery ratio by complex fertilizer was better in low-density(LD) section of fertilizer than in high-density(HD) section of control. As the result of surveying turfgrass characters according to dates, dry matters in HD sections of control plots were higher than these in LD sections of fertilizer plots in 6 Aug. before sprinkling a complex fertilizer. But dry matters in LD section of fertilizer were, on the contrary, higher than in 6 Sep. after sprinkling complex fertilizer. In view of the result so far conducted, a turfgrass recovery to LD sections of complex fertilizer was batter than that of HD sections of control. Sprinkling complex fertilizer on turfgrass damaged by competing with trees will maintain the turfgrass growth, even though happen to compete between trees and turfgrass.

Microbial fertilizer has been used to prompt turfgrass growth and quality and to prevent turfgrass diseases in turfgrass management of golf courses. This study was conducted to evaluate effects of microbial fertilizer containing Lactobacillus fermentum (MFcL) on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating turf color index, chlorophyll index, clipping yield, and nutrient content in the turfgrass tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), control fertilizer (CF), MFcL treatments [CF+$1.0g\;m^{-2}$(MFL), CF+$2.0g\;m^{-2}$ (2MFL)], and only MFcL treatment (OMF; $1.0g\;m^{-2}$ MFL). Chemical properties of soil by application of MFcL was unaffected. Turf color index, chlorophyll index, clipping yield and nutrient content and uptake of MFcL treatments were similar to CF. Furthermore, turfgrass shoot density of MFL was increased by 20% than that of CF, and that of OMF by 22% than NF. These results show that the application of microbial fertilizer containing L. fermentum increased turfgrass shoot density, which is not attributed to nutrient uptake in this study, but needs to be further investigated with other mechanisms such as biostimulant induction or phytohormone production.

This study was conducted to investigate whether several composted liquid manures (CLMs) are useful for biological control of large patch on zoysiagrass and investigate the chemical and biological factors to suppress large patch in soil treated with CLMs. The CLMs were produced at 4 different facilities for livestock excretion treatments located in Korea. Field experiments were carried out at 5 golf courses located near each facility. CLM and Chemical fertilizer (CF: water soluble fertilizer, 20-20-20) were applied four and three times with N at $12g\;m^{-2}$ per year, respectively. There was significant increase of concentration of K, Na, and Cu of soil treated with CLM compared to CF treatment. Among experimental plots, CN and GG2 plot sites were shown significant higher effect of biological control 80% and 50% respectively against large patch disease. The number of bacteria, Actinomycetes, and fungi in soil at these sites significantly increased and fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity was enhanced, while the soil was treated with CLM. The results of this study demonstrated that CLM application has effect on soil to suppress large patch and reduce the use of fungicide in environment-friendly turf management.
Recently there are difficulties in management of golf courses because of an ever increasing demand for golf as a leisure sports. Hence natural minerals as an amendment could be applied to improve and manage the physicochemical properties of the golf course soils in an environment-friendly way. In this study, quartz porphyry, which has been shown to be a good soil amendment for crop production, was tested for its effect on physicochemical properties of the golf course soil, growth of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) and changes of soil microbial communities in the soil. In general, amendment of 20% quartz porphyry into the soil turned out to be most effective in enhancing a proper growth of the grass leaves and roots. DGGE profile data showed that eubacterial species richness was also the highest at this level of the mineral treatment in which Actinobacteria and ${\alpha}$-Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla. This appeared to be attributed to a low level of soluble organic matter content and decreased concentration of cations such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $K^+$.
Water shortage is becoming a serious problem of turfgrass management on sand green. Many superintendents in golf course in Korea have interested in use of irrigation of recycled water for turfgrass water management. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of greywater as an irrigation source on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass green. Turfgrass was irrigated with tap water (TW) and greywater (GW), under with or without compound fertilizer application (nonfertilizer + TW, N-TW; non-fertilizer + GW, N-GW; fertilizer + TW, F-TW; fertilizer + GW, F-GW). The chemical properties of the green sand soil were not changed by irrigation. Turf color index, chlorophyll index, root length, clipping yield and nutrient uptake of GW treatment were similar to TW treatment. The growth and quality of turfgrass were more likely related with the fertilizer application than irrigation source or quality. These results indicated that GW could be used as alternative irrigation source on the sand greens of golf courses.
'Meyer' zoysiagrass(Zoysia japonica Steud.) is a popular turfgrass species used for transition zone golf course fairways and tees in mfd U.S.A golf courses because it is generally winter hardy while providing an excellent playing surface with minimal chemical and irrigation inputs. However, its functionality declines easily in many of the shaded areas of these courses. Reduced irradiance causes excessive shoot elongation, reduced tillering, and weak plants that are poorly suited to tolerate or recover from traffic and devoting. Trinexapac-ethyl (TE) effectively reduces gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthesis and subsequent shoot cell elongation. This study was initiated to evaluate TE effect on shoot elongation and stand persistence under two levels of shade in 'Meyer' zoysiagrass. A mature stand of 'Meyer' was treated with all combinations of three levels of shade(0%, 79%, and 92%) and three levels of monthly TE [0, 48 $g{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ a.i(0.5x) and 96 $g{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ a.i(1x)]. In full sun, the TE at 48 $g{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ a.i reduced clipping yield by 18% over a four-week period and, whereas the TE at 96 $g{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ a.i by 30% to 38%. Monthly application of TE at the 96 $g{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ a.i increased 'Meyer' tiller density in full sun and under 79% shade. Both rates of TE consistently reduced shoot growth under shade relative to the shaded control. Only the monthly applications of the TE at 96 $g{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ a.i consistently delayed loss of quality under 79% shade. Our results indicate TE can be an effective management practice to increase 'Meyer' zoysiagrass persistence in shaded environments.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the characteristics of Jeju recreational pension. This research is carried out by on site inspection and the survey on management of the recreation facilities. A target of research is sixteen facilities of recreation pension in Jeju-do. Recreational pension was created by Jeju Free International City of special law in 2000. Jeju Recreational pension has characteristics as follows : The land area of that is $1300m^{2}{\sim}6300m^{2}$, the number of guest rooms are 10, and the area of guest rooms are $29m^{2}{\sim}100m^{2}$. Especially most of them are in Namjeju-gun. Also, they mostly have R.C. structure, and materials of exterior are artificiality stone. The color of an outer walls are mostly white and light-beige and that of the roofs are mainly dark-brown. On plot plan, it has 4type of prototype; type of outbuilding, arranging in a row, corridor, hall and composition of three types with public area. The outside facilities are equipped by handy golf courses and outdoor barbecue cooking sites. Unfortunately, most of pensions don't reflect the characteristics of architecture factors in Jeju.
There is a growing concern in the United Stares over the environmental and human health implications associated with heavy use of water, pesticides, and inorganic ferilizers in maintaining picture perfect golf courses. There is also a growing awareness that a beautiful course is not necessarily a healthy course. The following discussion reviews the interrelationship of turfgrass and the soil that supports it and provides basic information on currently available alternatives to turf management practices that feature intensive application of inorganic fertilizers. water and pesticides. Soil is a dynamic natural environment in which microorganisms play an important role. Soil contains a large mass of microorganisms which produce thousands of enzymes that can catalyze the transformation and degradation of many organic molecules. (In top soil under optimum conditions may contain 10 billion cells per gram of soil.). Turfgrass and the soil which supports it are interdependent. The natural organic cycle as applied to turf and soil begins with healthy vigorous grass plants storing up the sun's energy in green plant tissues as chemical energy. Animals obtain energy by eating plants and when plants and animals die, their wastes are returned to the soil and provide "food" for soil microorganisms. In the next step of the organic cycle soil microorganisms break down complex plant tissues into more basic forms and make the nutrients available to grass roots. Finally, growing plants extract the available nutrients from the soil. By free operation of this organic cycle, natural grasslands have some of the most fertile soils on earths.
Rhizoctonia blight (large patch) caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2 is one of the major diseases on zoysiagrass in golf courses. In this study, anatgonistic bacteria to R. solani AG2-2 were selected in vitro tests using confrontation bioassay and triple layer agar diffusion method. The most active bacteria, Bacillus subtilis CJ-9 were tested for controlling large patch in pots. Relative Performance Indies (RPI) was used as a criterion for the selection of potential biocontrol agent. B. subtilis CJ-9 showed resistance to major synthetic agrochemicals used in golf course. In field tests at golf course, B. subtilis CJ-9 was more effective in suppression of large patch severity and population development of R. solani AG2-2 in soil than chemical fungicides. B. subtilis CJ-9 could be an alternative to chemical fungicides for eco-friendly management of large patch on zoysiagrass.
