  • Purpose: The study aims to delineate Shariah Governance Framework (SGF) by applying the components of New Institutional Theory (NIT) to provide an understanding of how Islamic banks theoretically influence Shariah Governance (SG) practice, structure, and process. Design/methodology/approach: As it is a conceptual paper, this paper has prepared based on an analytical approach to show how such institutions could provide a more effective system concerning the contents, procedures, and practices for the multiple users in the SG process of Islamic banks. Findings: The paper critically explores the adoption of NIT to develop SGF with its existing practice, structure, and procedure. Utilizing NIT, a proposed theoretical framework has developed for exploring the SG through its major components, i.e., 'isomorphism' and 'legitimacy'. It is stated that NIT can offer a useful framework by which homogenous structures, comprising guidelines, standards, and practices become recognized and authorized as a satisfactory standard corporate exercise. Thus, the proposed theoretical framework would be beneficial in understanding and exploring the SGF. Conclusion: The application of this SGF could help to justify the key dimensions of NIT with its overall formation, function, and practices that might also help to attain legitimacy.

  • On-line learning has been adopted as a major educational method due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and faculties got accustomed to on-line educational environment as they experienced it during the COVID-19 pandemic. Development of various technologies and social requirement for educational renovation lay groundwork for on-line learning as well. Therefore, on-line learning or blended learning will be likely to go on after the end of COVID-19 pandemic and it is necessary to prepare the guidelines for effective utilizing on-line learning. The primary purpose of this study is to examine the learning behaviors and the learning effects by using LMS data. Learning behaviors were measured in terms of learning time and access frequency for pre-recorded video lectures targeting computer-practice classes. The results of empirical analysis reveal that frequency was the significant predictor of course achievements but learning time was not. The findings of empirical analysis will provide insights that the effective planning and designing on-line classes based on learning behaviors are key to enhancing learning effects and learner's satisfaction.

  • This article aims to examine the concept and historical background of Applied Theatre and its major characteristics as a newly emerging theatrical practice in recent years. With these aims, the article chronicles the history of how Applied Theatre has developed and formed as an overarching umbrella term that encompasses different theatrical praxis. Given the ambiguity and confusion of this practice, the article argues the importance of recognizing the Applied Theatre's shifting paradigm of subject and object, a crucial element in understanding the practice. Further discussed is the exploration of 'community' in regards to comparing the similarities and differences among Applied Theatre, Community Theatre, and Community-based Performance. The article concludes that the essential comprehension of Applied Theatre's uniqueness comes from noticing and perceiving the paradigm shift that places participants and community as a subject of theatrical transaction rather than as an object, as traditional theatre has done so far.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relation between factors related to the clinical performance competency of dental hygiene students and their clinical learning environment. Methods: The study conducted a survey of dental hygiene students from October 18 to 30, 2023. The data were analyzed using one way analysis of variance, t-test, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: The total practicum lasted ≤10 weeks, 11-15 weeks, and ≥16 weeks for 41.7%, 33.5%, and 24.8% of the students, respectively. Half of them had experience at only one clinical institution. Clinical learning environment had an average score of 3.46 points, whereas the average clinical performance competency of the participants was 3.60 points. The major influencing factors on clinical performance competency were identified as preceptor' s guidance (β=0.277), work participation opportunities (β=0.213), and perceived importance of clinical practice (β=0.136). Conclusions: Efforts are required to provide students with prior education on the importance of clinical practice, improve the clinical learning environment with a focus on preceptor's guidance and work participation opportunities. And standardize various elements to resolve differences in the practice of clinical institutions across regions.

  • Although tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a general medical issue with growing prevalence and socioeconomic burden, most clinicians have not paid much attention to TR in the past. Several problems of TR have been pointed out in clinical practice, which include: ambiguous clinical manifestations and the difficulty in initial detection, limitations in generally used diagnostic tools, the absence of objective criterion for therapeutic intervention, high operative morbidity and mortality, and lack of long-term clinical data after the intervention for TR. Therefore, patients with TR usually visit clinicians at a much-advanced state, and this delay gives a major dilemma in clinical decision-making in a routine clinical practice. To improve the clinical outcome of TR, we need more knowledge about TR for solving the current problems and making strategies for better clinical practice. With this background, we have discussed in the present article about the pathophysiology of TR and the problems frequently experienced by clinical physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of TR. Furthermore, we have discussed the future strategy to improve the treatment of TR.

  • This study examined how middle-aged jobholders anticipate their living after retirement, how they plan their post-retirement financial welfare and what attitude they have towards old age. The data came from 290 middle-aged male and female people in Incheon, Suwon and Cheongju city and were analyzed to find the differences among public planned pension types, such as the National Pension System (NPS), the Government Employee Pension Corporation (GEPC), and the Korea Teachers Pension (KTP). The major results were as follows: First, the expected income level after retirement in GEPC members was the highest and the lowest in KTP members. Second, the expected living period after retirement is the main criteria used when determining the amount of money needed for old age. Third, KTP members were of the most inferior at financial planning and practice, especially self-reflection of their expending behavior, thrift and saving practice for old age.

  • Segmental retaining wall market in Korea has been growing dramatically since late 1990s in both engineered and non-engineered applications. Despite the inherent conservatism in the current design approaches, numerous major and minor structural problems have been reported during and after construction, covering a range of minor structural damage to total collapse. Much still needs to be investigated to fill the gap between the theory and the practice. This paper reviews several design issues with regard to the segmental retaining walls such as the selection of shear strength parameters for backfill soil, local stability, and tiered wall construction. In addition, the effects of shear strength parameters and the fundamental behavior of tiered SRWs are examined based on the results of finite element analysis. Implications of the findings from this study to current design practices were discussed in detail.

  • In medicine, general clinical practice moves in the direction of early detection and intervention for the prevention of progressive disease. In psychiatry, research in subjects with the risk syndrome for psychosis, has been conducted for the prevention of schizophrenia, known as a devastating chronic disease. The inclusion of 'attenuated psychosis syndrome', based on the results of early intervention studies, is one of the major issues in the upcoming DSM-V. Further investigations are needed to find biological markers and endophenotypes to supplement the diagnostic criteria. In the future, adoption of clinical staging is promising to overcome the shortcoming of current diagnosis of schizophrenia. In clinical practice, more concerns are needed about attenuated psychotic symptoms which might be risk signals for the transition to psychosis.
