Metal binding proteins or metallo-proteins are important for the stability of the protein and also serve as co-factors in various functions like controlling metabolism, regulating signal transport, and metal homeostasis. In structural genomics, prediction of metal binding proteins help in the selection of suitable growth medium for overexpression's studies and also help in obtaining the functional protein. Computational prediction using machine learning approach has been widely used in various fields of bioinformatics based on the fact all the information contains in amino acid sequence. In this study, random forest machine learning prediction systems were deployed with simplified amino acid for prediction of individual major metal ion binding sites like copper, calcium, cobalt, iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel, and zinc.
Generally, the integrated system using ion beam consists of 4 major parts, which are SEM, FIB, nano stage, and chamber. Among them, the nano stage and the chamber are designed and manufactured. The whole systems are integrated. Also, FE models are built to perform modal analyses of each part and the whole integrated system with a commercial program. Through these analyses, it is found that each part and the integrated system are very safe against vibrations including external excitations from ground and any others, because their natural frequencies are much larger than frequencies of external excitations. Also, isolation of ground induced vibration is considered.
The degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to physical and chemical attacks has been a major issue in construction engineering. Deterioration of RC structures due to chloride attack followed by reinforcement corrosion is one of the serious problems. The objective of this study is to develop a form of mathematical model of chloride ingress into concrete. In order to overcome some limits of the previous approaches, a mathematical model of chloride ingress into concrete consisting of chloride solution intrusion through the capillary pore and chloride ion diffusion through the pore water was proposed. Moreover, the variability of diffusivity of chloride ion due to degree of hydration of concrete, relative humidity in pore, exposure condition, and variation of chloride binding was considered in the chloride ingress model.
Green tea and their major constituents such as catechins are famous materials for their anti-oxidative and anti-carcinogenic activity, but many compounds with reducing power can promote the oxidation in their oxidized form or in the presence of metal ion. We investigated the pro-oxidative effect of the ethanol extract equivalent up to 30mg of dried weight of green tea leaves in four in vitro systems which could be used for detecting DNA damage. Although ethanol extract of green tea did not show significant mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium TA102, which is sensitive strain to oxidative stress, it degraded deoxyribose extensively in the presence of $FeCl_3-EDTA$ complex, promoted 8-oxoguanine formation in the live bacteria cell, Salmonella typhimurium TAI04, and cleaved super coiled DNA strand with the help of copper ion. It suggested that green tea, famous anti-oxidative material, can be pro-oxidant according to the condition of extraction or metal existence.
In this study, the characteristics of concrete strength according to age/curing condition and the penetration mechanism of seawater into the concrete has been studied. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been setup. The major test variables include the type of cement and the type of mineral admixture. The strength test as well as corrosion test have been conducted to explore the effects of chloride ion penetration on the properties of concrete. The experimental results and the developed theory in the present study can be efficiently used to analyze the chloride ion penetration and to estimate the durability of concrete structures.
Construct ion sector government policies are targeted towards regulation than facilitation and management. This approach often fails to integrate different segments of the public and private and seems to be inadequate in encouraging the private sector to achieve better quality construction. This situation suggests a need for a better and systematic approach for construct ion policy making. This paper suggests a model-based approach to public policy making using system dynamics approach. Singapore government's policy making efforts to encourage the use of prefabrication are discussed as an application example. This paper presents system models which discuss strengths and weaknesses of the current construction system in Singapore using casual loops, and highlights the feedback processes that would be useful in decision making for the government. Based on these system dynamics models, this paper identifies four major potential policy interventions policy interventions.
Seasonal variation of major inorganic ions in the greater Seoul area was estimated using a photochemical box model and a gas/aerosol equilibrium model with emphasis on semi -volatile nitrate. Pollutant emission was determined by season by comparing the predicted concentration with the measurement one obtained for a year from the late 1996. The results showed that particulate nitrate was the highest in summer but about 40% of total nitrate was present in the gas phase. This was due to volatilization at high temperature since ammonia was sufficient to neutralize all nitrate regardless of season. As relative humidity in summer was higher than the deliquescence point, particulate ion concentration with water was two times higher than that in other season. So called ‘NOx disbenefit’ indicating increase in particulate ion concentration with decrease in NOx emission was evident especially in winter.
Biosorption technology is recognized as an economically feasible alternative for the removal and/or recovery of metal ions from industrial wastewater sources. However, the structure of biosorbents is quite complex when compared with synthetic ion-exchange resins, which makes it difficult to quantify the ion-binding sites. Accordingly, this report describes a well-defined method to characterize the pK values and numbers of biomass functional groups from potentiometric titration data. When the proposed method was applied to Sargassum polycystum biomass as a model biosorbent, it was found that the biomass contained three types of functional groups. In addition, the carboxyl group (pK=$3.7{\pm}0.09$) was found to be the major binding sites ($2.57{\pm}0.06 mmol/g$) for positively-charged heavy-metal ions.
This study aims to devise and analyze a power generation system combining the solid oxide fuel cell and oxy-fuel combustion technology. The fuel cell operates at an elevated pressure, a constituting a SOFC/gas turbine hybrid system. Oxygen is extracted from the high pressure cathode exit gas using ion transport membrane technology and supplied to the oxy-fuel power system. The entire system generates much more power than the fuel cell only system due to increased fuel cell voltage and power addition from oxy-fuel system. More than one third of the power comes out of the oxy-fuel system. The system efficiency is also higher than that of the fuel cell only system. Recovering most of the generated carbon dioxide is major advantage of the system.
The application of focused ion beam (FIB) technology in micro/nano machining has become increasingly popular. Its use in micro/nano machining has advantages over contemporary photolithography or other micro/nano machining technologies such as small feature resolution, the ability to process without masks and being accommodating for a variety of materials and geometries. This paper was carried out some experiments of the micro plasma electrode fabrications using FIB. The sputtering of FIB has one major problem that is redeposited by sputtered material including $Ga^+$ ion source. Therefore we have verified the effect of the reposition by EDX. And the optimal condition is suggested to machine the micro plasma electrode.
