  • Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) is a statistic that measure pitcher performance by eliminating plate appearance outcomes that involve defensive play. FIP uses pitcher dependent outcomes such that walks, strikeouts, hit by pitches, and home runs allowed. The FIP equation derived from linear weights uses three coefficients 13, 3, -2 for evaluating Major League Baseball pitchers. However, these coefficients derived from run value of major league baseball are not suitable to Korea Baseball Organization pitchers due to baseball circumstances. In this study, new FIP called kFIP for Korea Baseball Organization pitchers are provided. We recalculate coefficients and get 14, 3, -1 for evaluating Korean Baseball pitchers. As a result, kFIP is statistically significantly better than FIP at predicting pitcher ERA in KBO League.

  • Various statistical classification methods to predict election to the Major League Baseball hall of fame of are implemented and their accuracies are compared. Seventeen independent variables are selected from the data of candidates eligible for the hall of fame and well-known classification methods such as discriminant analysis and logistic regression as well as the recently proposed Mahalanobis-Taguchi system(MTS). The MTS showed a better performance than the others in classification accuracy because it is especially efficient in cases where multivariate data does not constitute directionally geographical groups according to attributes.

  • Major League Baseball (MLB) records and releases the trajectory data for every baseball pitch, called the PITCHf/x, using three high-speed cameras installed in every stadium. In a previous study, the quality of the pitch was assessed as the expected number of bases yielded using PITCHf/x data. However, the number of bases yielded does not always lead to baseball scores, or runs. In this paper, we assess the quality of a pitch by combining baseball analytics metric Run Expectancy and Run Value using a Random Forests model. We compare the quality of pitches evaluated with Run Value to the quality of pitches evaluated with the expected number of bases yielded.

  • As Major League Baseball (MLB)'s continuous decline in popularity has caused its game attendance to drop gradually, the league makes a desperate attempt such as game rule changes to remain relevant. Along with the introduction of new rules to make games more dynamic such as the pitch clock, bigger bases, and defensive shift limitations, it is important for MLB franchises to understand drivers for game attendance. We focus on the effect of accumulated winning performance of the two teams on game attendance, one of the key drivers of game attendance, and investigate how it is influenced by consumer and industry factors such as online search and game rule changes. We find that game attendance increases as the prior winning performance of the home (away) team increases (decreases). We also find that online search and rule changes for more dynamic games moderate the effect of winning performance on game attendance.

  • On the website r/NYYankees, a sub-forum ("subreddit") of Reddit is devoted to the Major League Baseball team New York Yankees, with its predominantly male users showing their appreciation for baseball heroes by expressing erotic desires towards the players. When a player performs well, the subreddit is filled with admiration of desires to become the player's intimate lover-explicitly expressed by "male" fans. This paper explains the phenomenon of young male fans' desire for the now-lost model of traditional masculinity of domination and control, displayed in the context of baseball players' dominant performances. The discrepancy between a fan's non-homosexual real-world self and his homoerotic language on the subreddit is explained using the "performative fandom" theory, developed by Osborne and Coombs borrowing Butler's notion of performativity. This paper suggests how this desire for traditional masculinity serves as recognition to the collapse of masculinity in the modern American society.

  • The purpose of this study was to find spectator's value cognition and expected-benefit factors on professional baseball sportstar. Purposeful Sampling method was used to select among fan club leaders and people who had watched baseball games over ten years 8 informants who watched more than 4 times in 6 baseball games in 2011 Lotte Card Professional Baseball League. Data collection relies on focus group interviews and in-depth interviews. Text analysis was attempted to adopt the A-R-C needs theory proposed by Thomson(2006) for spectator's value cognition and the metaphors for consuming by Holt(1995) for expected-benefit factors. The research summary is as follow: Spectator's value cognition on professional baseball sportstar were an object of entertainment-oriented value, a major figure for social relationship-oriented and an object of identical. Spectator's expected-benefit factors on professional baseball sports tar were confirmation of values and heroic orientation. Meanwhile, spectator who had entertainment-oriented value cognition on professional baseball sportstar expect heroic orientation, who recognize professional baseball sportstar a major figure for social relationship-oriented and an object of identical pursue confirmation of values.

  • Purpose: We examined the kinematics and kinetics of the shoulder in youth baseball pitchers in light of the mechanisms of development of little league shoulder and humeral retrotorsion. Materials and Methods: The joint kinematics and the net force and torque acting on the humerus were calculated in fourteen youth pitchers throwing in a simulated game. Results: The major force component acting on the humerus was a tensile force of 378$\pm$81 N that peaked just after ball release. The predominant torque on the humerus was an external rotation torque about the long axis of the humerus. This torque reached a peak value of 35.3$\pm$6.7 Nm about 73$\%$through the pitching motion. This torque is approximately 66$\%$ of the torque required to fracture of the adult humerus. Conclusions: The direction of the humeral torque was consistent with the development of increased humeral retrotorsion in the throwing arm. Shear stress arising from the high torque during the late cocking phase likely leads to deformation the relatively weak proximal humeral epiphysis. The external rotation torque applied to the humerus during the pitch also agrees with the proposed mechanism for development little league shoulder, which has been hypothesized to be due to rotational stresses acting on the epiphysis during the throwing motion.

  • The purpose of this study is to implement a predictive model to support decision-making to replace a starting pitcher before a crisis situation in a baseball game. To this end, using the Major League Statcast data provided by Baseball Savant, we implement a predictive model that preemptively replaces starting pitchers before a crisis situation. To this end, first, the crisis situation that the starting pitcher faces in the game was derived through data exploration. Second, if the starting pitcher was replaced before the end of the inning, learning was carried out by composing a label with a replacement in the previous inning. As a result of comparing the trained models, the model based on the ensemble method showed the highest predictive performance with an F1-Score of 65%. The practical significance of this study is that the proposed model can contribute to increasing the team's winning probability by replacing the starting pitcher before a crisis situation, and the coach will be able to receive data-based strategic decision-making support during the game.
