Optimization of Stream Gauge Network Using the Entropy Theory (엔트로피 이론을 이용한 수위관측망의 최적화)

  • This study has evaluated the stream gauge network with the main emphasis on if the current stream gauge network can catch the runoff characteristics of the basin. As the evaluation of the stream gauge network in this study does not consider a special purpose of a stream gauge, nor the effect from a hydraulic structure, it becomes an optimization of current stream gauge network under the condition that each stream gauge measures the natural runoff volume. This study has been applied to the Nam-Han River Basin for the optimization of total 31 stream gauge stations using the entropy concept. Summarizing the results are as follows. (1) The unit hydrograph representing the basin response from rainfall can be transferred into a probability density function for the application of the entropy concept to optimize the stream gauge network. (2) Accurate derivation of unit hydrographs representing stream gauge sites was found the most important part for the evaluation of stream gauge network, which was assured in this research by comparing the measured and derived unit hydrographs. (3) The Nam-Han River Basin was found to need at least 28 stream gauge stations, which was derived by considering both the shape of the unit hydrograph and the runoff volume. If considering only the shape of the unit hydrograph, the number of stream gauges required decreases to 23.

Assessment of Ecological Streamflow for Maintaining Good Ecological Water Environment (수생태 환경유지를 위한 하천생태유량 산정)

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between stream water quality of TN (total nitrogen), TP (total phosphorus), and BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and TDI (Trophic Diatom Index) score determined by physico-chemical factors, biomass, and standing crops of epilithic diatoms, and to estimate the required amount of ecological streamflow for good water environment of Trophic Diatom. For the main stream of Chungju dam watershed of South Korea, total 100 field data of 3 years (2008~2010) measured in May and September were used to derive the relationship between water quality and TDI. Trophic Diatom had high correlation (0.55 determination coefficient) with TN. Using the relationship, the required streamflow was evaluated by using the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) for good Trophic Diatom water environment through T-N water quality maintenance. The SWAT simulated 8 years (2003~2010) stream discharges and T-N water quality along the main stream. From present garde C (score range: 30.0~45.0) to grade A (score above 60.0) of TDI, the May needs additional streamflow of $63.1m^3/sec$ (+36.7 % comparing with the present streamflow of $172.0m^3/sec$) at the watershed outlet.

  • The characteristics of ice packing factor (IPF) at the ice slurry system using one line type are compared with the system using two lines type. The installation space for one transporting line is saved at the one line system. For the one line type, the ice packing factor is reduced along the downstream, but for the two lines type, the ice packing factor is fixed. For the one line system, mass flow rate in the main line is fixed along the down-stream, but for two lines system, the mass flow rate in the main line is reduced along the downstream. For one line system, along the down stream after IPF=0, the temperature at the main steam is increased, and the extracted mass flow is increased. The initial IPF, at which the IPF is not arrived at zero upto the final node, is proposed for the B area.

  • This study look into the 3 stages which is distinguished by the usage of human in Man-Kyeong river. 'A nature based usage stage' is acknowledge the river itself and used only the tributary and built reservoir in a small scale from ancient to 1910s. 'A human based usage stage' is built the large scale reservoir at upper stream area and make the artificial waterway from 1920s. And the main stream is remodeled to protect the flood and get the agricultural land. 'A human and nature integration stage' is the main stream has a role not only the spill way but also clean water for inhabitants does together with river. The role and meaning of river is given newly. The development of technique and increase the need of the human is required the change in the role and meaning of river. The river is natural existence as it is, but the meaning and role is given by the human. Also it accompanied the change of the landscape in neighbor region. The natural river is controled the human life in the past, but it changed to social existence which is given the role and meaning by the human now.

Analysis of Thermal Characteristics for Areas of Musim Stream in Cheongju City (청주시 무심천 주변의 열환경 특성 분석)

  • The urban thermal environment can be an important index to detect heat island phenomena and manage it to improve urban life quality. Cheongju is a typical plain-city that main part has been formed and developed in lowland. The Mushim stream crosses the city from south to north. We reviewed the use of thermal remote sensing in stream around areas and the thermal environments, focusing primarily on the Urban Heat Island(UHI) effect. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between the stream nearby urban area and the stream cooling effect of UHI. The objectives are to determine the usefulness of KOMPSAT-2 bands MS3 and MS4 for vegetation cover mapping, and the usefulness of LANDSAT TM band 6 in identifying thermal environmental characteristics and UHI. Land Surface Temperatures (LST) are retrieved by single-channel algorithm to study the UHI from the 6th band (thermal infrared band) of LANDSAT TM images and thermal radiance thermometer based on remote sensing method and the LST distribution maps are accomplished according to the retrieval results. There is also comparison of satellite-derived and in situ measured temperature. The results indicated that the LST of urban center is higher than that of suburban area, the temperature of mountain and water are the lowest area, so it is clearly proved that there are obvious UHI effects by stream. The surface temperature distribution of Mushim stream is detected $2^{\circ}C$ lower than urban area.

Analyses of Seasonal Water Quality of The Anyang Stream (안양천의 계절별 수질분석)

  • In order to analysis of the water pollution of the Anyang stream(one of the biggest branch streams of the Han River) and its main tributaries, the geological and topographical and rainfall features in its basin were investigated. To do this, the water samples were collected 23 points of the upper, mid and down of Anyang stream and its tributaries and were analyzed based on the chemical methods, Korean Biotic Index(KBI) and Saprobien systems. The Anyang stream basin has a characteristic of topographical torrential heavy rainfall like a typical rainfall feature in Korea. The concentration and the outflow rate of rainfall is very different in seasonal, and water pollution in dry season is especially severe. After 1997, although the water quality status of stream has been improved gradually, the concentration of T-N and SS at the upstream is increased due to the deficiency of facility used for collecting wastewater released from industrial factories, livestock farms and residential areas. The mainstream of the Anyang stream is classified into the 5th grade water as polysaprobic water area according to Saprobien system and the biotic index is over 2.5 in overall. Most of tributaries have 1~3 grade water limit with ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic except the upper and mid streams of Samsung tributary, in which pollution status is the lowest part. Though Sambong tributary is ${\alpha}$-mesosaproboic, biotic index is low because of the appearance of abundant benthos animals in farming and fishing villages.

An Application of Water quality model for a Stream in Rural Watersheds (농촌유역 소하천에 대한 수질모형의 적용)

  • The WASP model was applied to Bokha stream with 8.4km of its main stem located in Ichon-gun, Kyonggi province in Korea. The stream was divided into 26 segments with each of 400m length, and 5 segments were embraced boundaries of its tributaries. The parameters of the model were calibrated by the trial and error method to minimize differences between observed and simulated concentration of water quality constituents. The correlation coefficients for DO, $NO_3-N,\;PO_4-P$ and organic P showed high values providing the ability of simulation. The correlation coefficients for BOD and $NH_3-N$ showed low values in both calibration and verification test.

Implementation of Synchronized Stream Cryptosytsem for Secure Communication in Radio Channel (무선 채널에서의 암호 통신을 위한 동기식 스트림 암호시스템 구현)

  • In this paper, a synchronized stream cryptosystem for secure communication in radio channel is designed and its security level is analyzed. The main parts of the proposed cryptosystem consist of synchronization pattern generator, session key generator, and key stream generator. The system performance is evaluated by analyzing the security level depending on the randomness, period, linear complexity, and correlation immunity. Experimental results with image data signal in the 10-1 and 10-2 channel error environment demonstrate the proper operation of the implemented crypto system.
