  • The phased array transducer has two distinct advantages. One is rapid scanning comparing with the conventional mechanical or manual scanning system. Therefore, output image is represented in real-time. The other is the dynamic focusing and the dynamic steering of ultrasonic beam. Only the delay times that are controlled electrically are used to focus and to steer beam without any lenses or wedges. In this study, the profile of the ultrasonic beam for the phased array transducer has been simulated in the Huygens principle with varying the inter-element spacing of the linear phased array transducer. From the result of this study, it was found that the ultrasonic beam spread wider as the inter-element spacing was decreased. However, the focusing effect was improved, even when the number of the element was not big. In addition, there was grating lobes that are constructed when the inter-element spacing is more than half wavelength. However, this grating lobe has lower amplitude than the main lobe.

  • This work presents a contribution to understand the inverted trussed beams behavior. The system has a main beam and struts with rectangular cross section associated to a wire rope enlaced to the main beam. It is an unpublished system with the advantage of easy positioning of the wire rope, once it is a continuous and connected by turnbuckles. It is a system that can be used as support for concrete formworks or for rehabilitation wooden beams proposal. The enlacement of the cable demands a small notch at the top of the cross section and a cross pin at the bottom. Six inverted trussed beams were tested, with spans of 180 cm with cables diameter of 1/4". Additionally, four simple beams without any external steel cable were also tested with material from the same lot of wood, allowing a comparison in rupture. The results showed capacity gain of around 60% compared to a simple beam. Once the wire rope characteristics and anchoring are very important for structure response, some improvement suggestions for the efficiency of the cables are also presented.

  • Steel systems composed of Reinforced Concrete column to Steel beam connection (RCS) have been raised as a structural system in the past few years. The optimized combination of steel-concrete structural elements has the advantages of both systems. Through beam and through column connections are two main categories in RCS systems. This study includes finite-element analyses of mentioned connection to investigate the seismic performance of RCS connections. The finite element model using ABAQUS software has been verified with experimental results of a through beam type connection tested in Taiwan in 2005. According to verified finite element model a parametric study has been carried out on five RCS frames with different types of lateral restraint system. The main objective of this study is to investigate the forming of plastic hinges, distribution of stresses, ductility and stiffness of these models. The results of current research showed good performance of composite systems including concrete column-steel beam in combination with steel shear wall and bracing system, are very desirable. The results show that the linear stiffness of models with X bracing and steel shear wall increase remarkably and their ultimate strength increase about three times rather than other RCS frames.

  • Before studying graft polymerization of PP(polypropylene) nonwoven fabrics by electron beam preirradiation method, mechanical properties, thermal properties and degree of crystallinity of original and electron beam irradiated PP nonwoven fabrics were investigated. Morphological surface changes of electron beam irradiated PP nonwoven fabrics were not observed. And the melting temperature and crystallinity of electron beam irradiated PP nonwoven fabrics also did not change as compared with untreated PP nonwoven fabrics. But the breaking strength of electron beam irradiated PP nonwoven fabrics decreased with increasing electron beam absorbed dose due to breakdown of some parts of polymer main chain.

  • Past experiences from recent earthquakes indicate that shear failures of beam-column connections were one of the main reasons causing significant damages and collapses of RC structures subjected to earthquake loadings. Many researchers and engineers have conducted to propose an effective way to improve the joint shear strength of RC connections. This paper presents an analytical model for the RC exterior beam-column joints strengthened with CFRP sheets. In the analytical model, the effect of shear behavior of the RC beam-column joint, bond slip of the beam longitudinal reinforcements and CFRP sheets were considered and incorporated into the non-linear structural analysis program. Final analytical results were compared with those from the experiment of eight exterior RC beam-column specimens. The analytical results showed that the developed connection model is very useful to investigate the hysteretic joint behavior and overall load-displacement response of the RC beam-column connections strengthened with CFRP sheets.

  • In this paper we compare the solution of the one-dimensional beam model and the numerical solution of the two-dimensional linearized elasticity problem for rectangular domain of the beam-like form. We first derive the beam model starting from the two-dimensional linearized elasticity, the same way it is derived from the three-dimensional linearized elasticity. Then we present the numerical solution of the two-dimensional problem by finite element method. As expected the difference of two approximations becomes smaller as the thickness of the beam tends to zero. We then analyze the applicability of the one-dimensional model and verify the main properties of the beam modeling for thin beams.

  • We analyzed through numerical simulations the properties of a square beam homogenizer near the target for laser shock peening. The efficiency was calculated near the target by considering the plasma threshold of the metals. We defined the depth of focus of the square beam homogenizer with a given efficiency near the target. Then, we found the relationship between the depth of focus for the laser shock peening and four main parameters of the square beam homogenizer: the plasma threshold of the metal, the number of lenslets in the array-lens, the focal length of the condenser lens and the input beam size.

  • The etching characteristics of magnetic thin films of permalloy and Fe-based alloys are investigated. The thin films are fabricated by rf magnetron sputtering and the substrates used are silicon and glass. Etching is done by ion beam technique and the main process parameters investigated are beam voltage, beam current and accelerating voltage. The etch rate of the magnetic films is proportional to the beam current, but it is not directly related to the accelerating voltage and beam voltage. The dependence of etch rate on the process parameters can be explained by ion current density. It is found that the ion beam etching is effective in obtaining well-developed micro-patterns on the permalloy and Fe- based magnetic thin films.

  • This paper deals with structural behavior of reinforced concrete beams with high strength under fire and fire damaged condition. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the residual strength of flexural members by exposure time to fire. For this purpose, six beam specimens are fabricated and experimented. Among the specimens, four specimens are exposed to the fire for 60 and 90 minutes and two specimens are control beam that is not exposed to fire. After being cooled in room temperature, the specimens are loaded to the failure. The research result shows that the main variables of the test, concrete cover and exposure time to fire are much influenced on the structural behavior and the residual strength.

  • The aim of the investigation described in this paper is to study the nonlinear parametric vibrations and stability of a simply-supported viscoelastic beam with an intra-span spring. Taking into account a time-dependent tension inside the beam as the main source of parametric excitations, as well as employing a two-parameter rheological model, the equations of motion are derived using Newton's second law of motion. These equations are then solved via a perturbation technique which yields approximate analytical expressions for the frequency-response curves. Regarding the main parametric resonance case, the local stability of limit cycles is analyzed. Moreover, some numerical examples are provided in the last section.
