This work was performed to investigate the effect of a split injection on spray characteristics of fuel sprays injected from a common rail system. In order to analyze the spray behavior and atomization characteristics at various rates of split injections, the injection durations of pilot and main injections were varied in experiments. The injection rate of split injection was measured to study the effect of the pilot injection on the main injection. By using a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera, the development of the injected spray was visualized at various elapsed time from the start of injection. The microscopic characteristics such as SMD and axial velocity were analyzed by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system. The results indicate that the ambient gas flow generated by the pilot injection affects the behavior of main spray, whereas the effect of pressure variation on the main spray is little. The spray tip penetration of a main spray with pilot injection is longer than that of the single injection by the effect of ambient gas flow. Also the main spray produces larger droplets than the pilot spray due to a small relative velocity between the droplets and ambient gas.

Spray characteristics of a fuel injector have an important effect upon engine power and emission. Thus this study was investigated the spray characteristics of the intermittent injection using a gasoline fuel injector. Image processing system and PDA system were utilized for visualization of a spray behavior and measurements of a droplet size and velocity, respectively. Fuel injection duration was fixed with 3ms and injection pressure was varied such as 250kPa, 300kPa, 350kPa. for a high fuel injection pressure, spray tip arrival time was fluctuated at a vigorously disintegrated cross section. Axial velocity was linear correlated with fuel droplet size in the time interval of an injected main spray at spray downstream.
The effects of fuel density and fuel viscosity on spray characteristics were investigated under two different gas turbine fuels and various fuel supply pressure conditions through measurement of SMD, number density and volume flux by using PDPA system in dual orifice injector for gas turbine engines. In this study, we found out that the droplet size and spray structure are strongly depend on fuel density for dual orifice injector. The spray characteristics of high density fuel in dual orifice injector are similar with the characteristics of low density fuel in single orifice injector. The shear region between primary main fuel stream and secondary main fuel stream is examined in low density fuel condition but not exist in high density fuel condition, then this shear region is very important in quality of gas turbine spray. There are worth consideration for the effect of fuel density on spray characteristics in frontal device design to improve combustion efficiency.

Cold gas dynamic spray is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating during the process. Cold gas dynamic spray is conducted by powder sprayed by supersonic gas jet, and generally called the kinetic spray or cold-spray. Cold-spray was developed in Russia in the early 1980s to overcome the defect of thermal spray method. Its low process temperature can minimize thermal stress and also reduce the deformation of the substrate. Most researches on cold-spray have focused on micro scale coating, but our research team tried to apply this method to macro scale deposition. The macro scale deposition causes deformation of a thin substrate which is usually convex to the deposited side. In this research, the main cause of the deformation was investigated using 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and properties of deposited aluminum layer such as coefficient of thermal expansion, Elastic modulus, hardness, electric conductivity were measured. From the result of the analysis, it was concluded that compressive residual stress was the main reason of substrate deformation while CTE had little effect.

Detailed experimental study has been made of air blast kerosene spray flames with and without swirl in combustion air flow. Phase-Doppler detect technique is used to measure Sauter mean diameter, axial component mean and rms velocity, size-velocity correlation, and number density. These measurements are obtained for both nonreacting and reacting cases under several stable flame conditions. The results show that the introduction of swirl to the combustion air modifies the spatial distribution of droplet size, velocity, and number density, and thus alters the flame structure. However, due to the weak swirl intensity, the overall structure of swirling flames are essentially same as that of nonswirling flames. Physical model of structure of air blast atomized spray flames is projected to show that spray flames are composed of three distinct regions: the two-phase mixture region, the main reaction and the intermittent combustion region. Near the atomizer, two phase mixture of droplet and air is formed in the core region. This dense spray region is characterized by high droplet number density and the strong convective effect. There follows the main combustion region where the main flame penetrates within the spray boundary. Main reaction region of these flames are governed by internal group combustion mode. Finally there exists the intermittent combustion region where local group burning or isolated droplet burning occurs.
In this article, spray characteristics in CI engines fuelled with vegetable oils and its derivatives will be reviewed. Of edible vegetable oils, soybean oil and rapeseed oil were mainly investigated. Of inedible vegetable oils, jatropha oil and used frying oil were main concern on the research on the spray characteristics in CI engine. Spray angle and spray penetration were mainly examined among the macroscopic spray characteristics and Sauter mean diameter was only investigated among the microscopic spray characteristics. There exist six different definitions of spray angle which should be examined. Neat vegetable oil and biodiesel fuels show smaller spray angle than diesel fuel. Biodiesel fuel and vegetable oils and its blend have a longer spray penetration than diesel fuel. However, biodiesel blends with diesel shows the similar spray penetration with diesel fuel. SMDs in the biodiesel spray, vegetable oils and its blends spray are higher than that in the diesel spray.
The Gasoline Direct Injection(GDI) system has been highlighted due to the improvement of fuel consumption and the control of exhaust emission from gasoline engines. Main purpose of the present study is to measure spray characteristics of GDSI for real engine application. We have investigated experimentally spray tip penetration, spray angle, tip velocity and spatial spray distribution. Counter-rotating vortex grown on the spray surface plays an important role in the spray characteristics. Accordingly the spray tip penetration and tip velocity do not excess 50mm, 20m/s respectively, under 0.6MPa ambient pressure. the spray cone angle of GDSI have a same tendency to a simplex swirl atomizer.

The main objective of this work is to investigate the effect of ambient conditions on the spray behavior and spray characteristics of high-pressure fuel injector. For this purpose, the effects of ambient pressure and temperature on the spray characteristics have been studied by applying the analysis of visualization system and phase Doppler particle analyzer. In this experiment, the visualization of spray behavior was performed under various ambient gas conditions and injection parameters such as gas temperature, ambient pressure, injection pressure of injector, and axial distance from the nozzle tip. Based on the investigation results, the spray tip penetration and spray width decrease with the increase of ambient gas pressure in the spray chamber. The effects of the spray parameters on the microscopic characteristics of gasoline spray were discussed.
In order to develop an precision aerial pesticide application system to be attached to an unmanned helicopter which can be applied to small lots of land, this study analyzed the flowing and spraying characteristics of the spray droplets by the main rotor downwash by setting the application conditions at the flight altitude of 3 m, the diameter of main rotor of 3.1 m, the boom length of around 2.8 m, and the spraying rate of 8 L/ha. The results of this study are summarized below. Through analysis of the covering area ratio of the spray droplets by main rotor downwash by nozzle type, boom with tilt angle and height, it was found that the covering area ratio of the twin flat-fan nozzle of around 25% was more uniform than other types of nozzle, also boom with $10^{\circ}$ tilt angle and spraying height of 3 m was shown to be the appropriate conditions for aerial application of pesticides. It was found that the nozzle position to minimize the scattering loss of spray droplets due to vortex phenomenon at both ends of the main rotor was around 10 cm from the end of the main rotor. An application test for the aerial pesticide application system attached to the HUA-ACEI unmanned helicopter developed by the Rural Development Administration showed that the range of covering area ratio of the spray droplets was 10-25%, and the spraying width was approximately 7 m when over 10% of covering area ratio was considered for valid spraying.
An experimental study was carried out to understand the spray characteristics of three kinds(kerosene, heating oil & diesel) of hydrocarbon-fuels. Fuel temperature and injection pressure were main variables in the experiment. Fuel Temperature was changed to obtain various levels of fuel viscosity. Spray angle and spray length were measured by using LVS(Laser Vapor Screen) photographs. 1D PDPA system was used to measure droplet size & droplet velocity. In room temperature, spray characteristics of three kinds of fuels were good, especially in case the fuel injection pressure was more than $6Kgf/cm^2$ It was also found that spray characteristics were poor in case fuel kinematic viscosity was more than 5cSt.
