  • To determine the effects of Mahaengeuigam-tang(MHEGT) on obesity, the obesity-related factors (gastrin, CGRP, ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide-1, insulin, orexin, leptin, serotonin, NPY) were investigated in the stomach, pancreas, brain of mice by immunohistochemical methods for 4 weeks after Mahaengeuigam-tang(MHEGT) administration. The change of boy weight decreased in MHEGT administered group than that of control group. The immunohistochemical density of the gastrin and CGRP positive cells on pylorus of stomach increased in MHEGT administered group than that of control group. The number of ghrelin immunoreactive cells on stomach decreased in MHEGT administered groups than that of control group. The immunohistochemical density of GLP-1 in the pancreas decreased in MHEGT administered group than that of control group. The immunohistochemical density of insulin positive cells in the pancreas decreased in MHEGT administered group than that of control group. The immunohistochemical density of orexin and NPY positive neurons in the diencephalon was slightly stronger in MHEGT administered group than that of control group. The immunohistochemical density of serotonin and leptin positive neurons was stronger in MHEGT administered group than that of control group. These results demonstrate that Mahaengeuigam-tang(MHEGT) increased the immunohistochemical density of factors related to appetite inhibitors, and decreased the immunohistochemical density of factors related to stimulator of food intake in stomach, pancreas and brain.

  • Background and Objective : Bowen's disease is a type of an in situ squamous cell carcinoma. Typical type of Bowen's disease present as a gradually growing well-dermarcated erythematous plaque with an irregular border and surface crusting or scaling. This case demonstrates that Bowen's disease which had a relapse during applying the topical imiquimod can be treated by herbal medicine. Methods : A 72-year-old man patient presented with a erythematous plaque on his right medial malleolar area. The diagnosis of Bowen's disease was based on the clinical features. The chief complaints were scales, fissures, crusts and dryness of skin, erythema plaque, hyperpigmentation, bleeding, tenderness on the lesion. He was treated with Mahaengeuigam-Tang for 77 days. The severity of Bowen's disease was evaluated by visible assessment to determine the end-point of clearance. Results : After the treatment, fissures, crusts and dryness of skin and bleeding, tenderness on the lesion were vanished. Scales and erythema plaque, hyperpigmentation of the lesion little remained. Conclusions : Mahaengeuigam-Tang can be used on the treatment of skin disease which has characteristics plaques and crusts of skin.

  • The anti-inflammatory activity of water extract of Mahaengeuigam-Tang(MHEGTWE) was examined using the carrageenin and acetic acid induced edema, croton oil induced granuloma pouch, and adjuvant arthritis in rats. In addition, the acute toxicity, analgesic and antipyretic effects of MHEGTWE were investigated by the general experimental methods. In acute toxicity test in mice, MHEGTWE showed 10% mortality at 2400 mg/kg(p.o), but it did not showed at 1200 mg/kg(i.p). It was also showed significant analgesic action on the writhing syndrome induced by 0.7% acetic acid at 600 mg/kg(p.o) and its antipyretic activity was observed in the typhoid vaccine induced fevered rats at 300 mg/kg(p.o). By the oral administration of the MHEGTWE, the significant anti-inflammatory activity was observed on 1% carrageenin induced edema, and it significantly inhibited the granuloma and exudate formation in rats. In the adjuvant arthritis experiment, the MHEGTWE decreased the hind paw edema in rats for 19 days. The results suggest that MHEGTWE has analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic action.

  • Objectives : Mahaengeuigam-Tang (MHEGT) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of rheumatic aerthritis, rheumatisim, eczema and asthma. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular mechanisms of MHEGT for cartilage protection in monosodium iodoacetate(MIA)-induced osteoarthritis, particularly focusing on apoptosis. Method : Thirty young male Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the study. Rats were intra-articularly injected with 2 mg MIA in a total volume of 50 ㎕ saline. In MHEGT group, MHEGT extract was orally administered once daily to MIA-induced osteoarthritis rats, and rats of control group were given with saline only. At 4 weeks after MIA injection, all animals were sacrificed, and the histological changes and articular thickness were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Moreover, the immunohistochemical analyses of BAX and Bcl-2 were carried out. Results : The histomorphological examinations revealed that MHEGT reduced MIA-induced cartilage damage. And, MHEGT ameliorated the severity of cartilage surface damages after MIA injection. Furthermore, MHEGT suppressed the MIA-induced increases of pro-apoptotic BAX protein and increased the protein expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein. Conclusion : These findings indicate that MHEGT protects against MIA-induced cartilage damage by inhibition of the apoptotic pathway, demonstrating significant protection of cartilage against osteoarthritis. These results suggest that MHEGT may potentially have clinical applications in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
