  • The coupling phenomenon between stress and magnetic induction, known as magnetostriction, has been successfully applied to generate and measure elastic waves. Most applications of this phenomenon thus far, however, are rather limited to cylindrical ferromagnetic waveguides. The main objective of this work is to develop a new patch-type, orientation-adjustable magnetostrictive transducer that is applicable for non-cylindrical, non-ferromagnetic waveguides. The existing patch-type transducer consisting of a ferromagnetic patch and a racetrack coil is useful to generate elastic waves only in one specific direction once the patch is bonded to a test specimen. However, the proposed transducer can transmit and receive elastic waves in any direction only with one patch at a given location. The proposed magnetostrictive transducer consists of a circular nickel patch, a figure-of-eight coil, and a couple of bias permanent magnets. Because of the unique configuration of the transducer, the propagating direction of the generated waves can be freely controlled since the set of bias magnets and the coil is not bonded to the magnetostrictive patch. In this work, the characteristics of the proposed transducer were investigated experimentally.

  • This is concerned with the radiation pattern of elastic waves in a plate generated by an orientation-adjustable patch-type magnetostrictive transducer. In general, not only the Lamb waves but also shear horizontal (SH) waves are produced by the deformation of the circular magnetostrictive patch bonded to a plate. Among the two types of waves, this paper investigates the radiation patterns of SH waves. A number of experimental results are presented. They are also accurately predicted by a theory developed by the present authors. Experimental findings were explained by a theoretical analysis.

  • A new magnetostrictive patch array transducer for the generation and detection of torsional waves is developed fur the on-line health monitoring of rotating shafts. Even though the torsional wave is useful in nondestructive evaluation due to its non-dispersive property, a transducer generating torsional waves in rotating shafts has not been developed so far. In this research, a torsional wave transducer using the magnetostrictive effect is newly developed. By bonding an away of magnetostrictive rectangular patches on the outer surface of the shaft at an oblique angle of $45^{\circ}$ and encircling the array by a solenoid coil, we have successfully generated and measured torsional waves by the developed transducer. Several experiments were carried out to check the transducer performance.

  • Omni-directional shear-horizontal magnetostrictive patch transducers have a disadvantage that magnetic flux leakage into the plate when it is installed on a ferromagnetic plate. The leakage produces poor transduction efficiency and unwanted wave mode excitation which should be avoided in guided wave inspections of large plate-like structures. In order to resolve these problems, we newly developed a method to reduce the leakage into the plate. In the method, the patch and the magnet are vertically lifted off and their optimal positions are determined by numerical simulations. Also, the verification of the developed method is successfully verified by experiments.

  • Guided wave technology is advantageous for fast inspection of pipe wall thinning since the guided wave propagates long distance. In this investigation, the method to evaluate gradual wall thinning in a pipe based on the arrival time delay with magnetostrictive patch transducers is presented. Low frequency A0 Lamb waves were generated and measured by the present transducer and it was applied to arrival time delay measurement experiments on a test pipe having gradual wall thinnings artificially manufactured. From experiments, consistent results that wall thinning increases the arrival time delay of A0 waves were obtained. Consequently, the feasibility of the magnetostrictive patch transducers to evaluate wall thinning was verified.

  • The on-line monitoring for the wall thinning in secondary system has been considered one of main issues for the safety of nuclear power plants. To establish the on-line monitoring technique for the pipe wall thinning, the development of the ultrasonic transducer working in high-temperature is very important. In this investigation, the magnetostrictive transducer is concerned for high temperature condition up to $300^{\circ}C$. The magnetostrictive transducer has many advantages such as high working temperature, durability, cost-effectiveness, and shear waves, most of all. A thin Fe-Co alloy patch whose Curie temperature is over $900^{\circ}C$ was employed as a ferromagnetic material for magnetostriction. Wave transduction experiments in various temperature were carried out and the effect of bias magnets was considered together with the dry coupling performance of the transducer. From experimental results, consequently, it was found that the magnetostrictive transducer works stable even in high temperature up to $300^{\circ}C$ and can be a promising method for the on-line monitoring of the wall thinning in nuclear power plants.

  • The effects of biasing magnetic fields on the performances of magnetostrictive ultrasonic transducers are investigated. The transducers are patch-type ones which are used for SHM of plate structures. Various kinds of configurations of biasing magnets are covered experimentally. It is experimentally verified that how the biasing magnetic field deploys is the most significant factors on maximizing the transducer output. From the magnetostriction curve of nickel, it is concluded qualitatively that it is not the absolute values of biasing magnetic field but the slope of magnetostriction curve to be taken account of.

  • The ultrasonic guided wave phased array using magnetostrictive patch transducers is proposed. The magnetostrictive transducer has received much attention because it is cost-effective and capable to generate ultrasonic waves with a simple configuration. However, it has not been used for ultrasonic guided wave phased array applications until now. In this paper, we propose a magnetostrictive transducer based phased array system consisting of a multi-channel function generator, power amplifiers and Lamb wave magnetostrictive transducers. To check the performance of the ultrasonic guided wave phased array, several Lamb wave focusing experiments were carried out in an aluminum plate. The results demonstrated the capability of the developed array to focus the Lamb waves at specific target points.

  • This paper is concerned wi th the generation of the Lamb waves in a nonferromagnetic plate by a recently-developed orientation-adjustable patch-type magnetostrictive transducer (OPMT) and the dispersion analysis from the measured Lamb waves. OPMT is capable of adjusting wave-propagation orientation only with a single installation on a plate. The mechanics behind the wave generation and measurement by the magnetostrictive phenomenon, the working principle of OPMT is explained and the actual generation and measurement of the Lamb waves were conducted in a 3 mm-thick aluminum plate. For the accurate analysis of the dispersion characteristics of the measured Lamb waves, a modified version of the short-time Fourier transform, known as the dispersion-based short-time Fourier transform, was employed. The results presented in this work would serve as the underlying research for an advanced non-destructive evaluation based on ultrasonic waves.
