  • This paper presents vehicle road test of a semi-active suspension system equipped with continuously controllable magnetorheological (MR) dampers. As a first step, front and rear MR dampers are designed and manufactured based on the optimized damping force levels and mechanical dimensions required for a commercial middle-sized passenger vehicle. After experimentally evaluating dynamic characteristics of the MR dampers, the test vehicle is prepared for road test by integrating current suppliers, real-time data acquisition system and numerous sensors such as accelerometer and gyroscope. Subsequently, the manufactured four MR dampers (two for front parts and two for rear parts) are incorporated with the test vehicle and a skyhook control algorithm is formulated and realized in the data acquisition system. In order to emphasize practical aspect of the proposed MR suspension system, road tests are undertaken on proving grounds: bump and paved roads. The control responses are evaluated in both time and frequency domains by activating the MR dampers.

  • This paper presents vibration control performances of a commercial magnetorheological (MR) suspension via new control strategy considering hysteresis of the field-dependent damping force of MR damper. A commercial MR damper which is applicable to high class passenger vehicle is adopted and its field-dependent damping force is experimentally evaluated. Preisach hysteresis model for the MR damper is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. Then, a feed-forward compensation strategy for the MR damper is formulated and integrated with a linear quadratic regulation (LQR) feedback controller for the suspension system. Control performances of the proposed control strategy for the MR suspension is experimentally evaluated with quarter vehicle test facility.

  • This paper presents control performances of a seat suspension system equipped with magnetorheological (MR) dampers using a new adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller (FSMC). Adaptive fuzzy controller is formulated by considering the acceleration of the seat. It has been demonstrated that the proposed seat suspension system realized by the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller can provide effective performances such as reduced vibration.

  • This paper presents optimal design of controllable magnetorheological suspension unit for a tracked vehicle. As a first step, a double-rod type MR suspension unit is designed on the basis of the Bingham model of commercially available MR fluid, and its damping characteristics are evaluated with respect to the intensity of the magnetic field. Subsequently, the governing equation of motion of the MR suspension system featuring the MR valve is established. Then, the optimization problem to find optimal geometric dimensions of the MR supension unit is formulated by considering an objective function which is related to damping torque and control energy. The first order optimization method intergrated with a commercial finite element method(FEM) software is adopted to obtain optimal solution of the system. The performance characteristics of the optimized MR susepnsion unit is then evaluated and compared with initial one.

  • This paper proposes a new type of MR(magnetorheological) fluid based suspension system and applies it to military vehicle for vibration control. The suspension system consists of gas spring and MR damper. The nonlinear behavior of spring characteristics is evaluated with respect to the wheel travel and damping force model due to viscosity and yield stress of MR fluid is derived. Subsequently, a military vehicle of 6WD is adopted for the integration of the MR suspension system and its nonlinear dynamic model is established by considering vertical, pitch and roll motion. Then, a sky-hook controller associated with semi-active actuating condition is designed to reduce the imposed vibration. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MR suspension system, computer simulation is undertaken showing vibration control performance such as roll angle and pitch angle evaluated under bump and random road profiles.

  • This paper presents the feasibility for improving the ride quality of railway vehicle equipped with semi-active suspension system using magnetorheological(MR) fluid damper. In order to achieve this goal, a fifteen degree of freedom of railway vehicle model, which includes a car body, bogie frame and wheel-set is proposed to represent lateral, yaw and roll motions. The MR damper system is incorporated with the governing equation of motion of the railway vehicle which includes secondary suspension. To illustrate the effectiveness of the controlled MR dampers on railway vehicle secondary suspension system, the sky-hook control law using the velocity feedback is adopted. Computer simulation for performance evaluation is performed using Matlab. Various control performances are demonstrated under external excitation which is the creep force between wheel and rail.
