  • This study investigates the influence of sintering temperature on the magnetic properties and frequency dispersion of the complex permeability of Ni-Zn-Cu ferrites used for magnetic shielding in near-field communication (NFC) systems. Sintered specimens of $(Ni_{0.7}Zn_{0.3})_{0.96}Cu_{0.04}Fe_2O_4$ are prepared by conventional ceramic processing. The complex permeability is measured by an RF impedance analyzer in the range of 1 MHz to 1.8 GHz. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permeability depend sensitively on the sintering temperature, which is closely related to the microstructure, including grain size and pore distribution. In particular, internal pores within grains produced by rapid grain growth decrease the permeability and increase the magnetic loss at the operating frequency of NFC (13.56 MHz). At the optimized sintering temperature ($1225-1250^{\circ}C$), the highest permeability and lowest magnetic loss can be obtained.

  • In this study, we developed a conversion core that produces power by utilizing the unused magnetic field in a switchboard. The conversion core makes it possible to utilize power that is normally wasted. The conversion core is composed of a core, filter, and battery. A prototype was installed in a switchboard to conduct tests on the output, battery storage, and output boosting of multiple batteries. Energy was harvested from the magnetic field generated by a busbar of the switchboard, and the power conversion ratio of the core yielded 1.08-1.01 mW per 1 A of bus current. Supplying this technology to the market after further R&D and commercialization is expected to greatly assist in the dissemination of energy harvesting, which has not yet spread widely to the general public.

  • A magnetic field sensing system with a single primary sensor and multiple reference sensors deployed locally and orthogonally, was proposed for downlink signal reception and interference cancelling for Through-the-Earth Communication (TEC). This paper mathematically analyzes a design optimization process for a search coil magnetometer (SCM), and applies that process to minimize the bandwidth of the primary SCM for TEC signal reception and the volume of reference SCMs for multiple distributions. The primary SCM achieves a 3-dB bandwidth of 7 Hz, a sensitivity threshold of 120 fT/${\surd}$Hz, and a volume of $2.32{\times}10^{-4}m^3$. The entire sensing system volume is as small as $10^{-2}m^3$. Experiments with interference from industrial frequency harmonics demonstrated an average of 36 dB and 18 dB improvements in signal-to-interference ratio and signal-to-interference plus noise ratio, respectively, using multichannel recursive-least-squares algorithm. Thus, the proposed sensing system can reduce the interference effectively and allows reliable downlink signal reception.

  • This paper presents the electromagnetic shielding structure for low frequency wireless power transfer system with magnetic induction method using soft magnetic materials. Soft magnetic materials have advantages such as high permeability and low magnetic loss, but have undesirable effect of power loss by eddy current. To overcome this, we proposed the patterned soft magnetic material to suppress the eddy current path. For validity of this paper, we simulated the coil transfer efficiency and the radiated electromagnetic field, and fabricated the proposed structure using 79-permalloy. The measured results shows good agreements with the simulated results and reduction of the radiated electromagnetic field compared to commercial ferrite plate.

  • The electric railway cars are operated by high voltage supply through the catenary wire. Also, numerous electric equipments operated by electric signal are distributed in the electric railway cars. Such electric equipments are exposed to EMI/EMC problems, and there is the possibility that the magnetic field due to the catenary wire current takes effect on the electromagnetic field in the electric railway cars which move under the catenary wire. There is the possibility that the electromagnetic interference generates in view of the operation of many electric equipments in the electric railway cars. There is the possibility that the communication device faults generate, and that the hazards on the human beings generate. In this paper, we predict the magnetic field around the catenary wire, and obtain the exact magnetic field distribution by comparing the analytic results and the numerical results. Finally, we confirmed the possibility of the passive loop mitigation by comparing the analytic results and the numerical results through the passive loop mitigation technique.

  • We have studied alternating transport current losses in the vertically stacked high temperature superconducting tapes(HTS) using numerical techniques. In the case of stacked conductors, HTS tapes are exposed to self-field generated by transport current itself and also experienced external magnetic field around adjacent tapes. It is well known that magnetic interactions between neighbored tapes have significant effect on their properties of superconducting tapes such as current distribution, AC loss, and critical current. In this paper, we investigated the transport current losses in stacked conductors consisting of a few of the HTS tapes using numerical analysis. Current distributions are calculated in HTS tape cross-section taking account of magnetic field dependencies, which are represented superconducting nonlinear properties. Dissipated losses in tape and stacked conductors were integrated with current distribution and electric field intensity in the whole conductor region. Finally estimated results were discussed and verified through the analytical theory.

  • The authors propose a magnetic actuator for use as a navigation system for capsule endoscopes. The actuator is composed of a capsule dummy, a permanent magnet inside the capsule, and an external spiral structure. The device rotates and propels wirelessly when exposed to an external rotational magnetic field. In this study we measured the effect of the spiral shape on the velocity and thrust force properties. According to our experimental results, the actuator obtained a maximum velocity and thrust force when the spiral angle was set at 45 degrees, the number of spirals was set at 4, and the spiral-height was set at 1-mmf. We also conducted a motion test in the large intestine of a pig placed on a 30 degrees slope. The actuator passed through a 700 mm length of the intestine in about 300 s. The device also managed to travel up and down the 30 degrees slope with no difficulty whatsoever. Our results demonstrate the great potential of this actuator for use as a navigation system for capsule endoscopes.

  • In recent society, the quality of human life has improved due to the use of electric appliances and the high powered electrical equipments. However, lots of electric appliances and equipments generate the electromagnetic field hazard. Many studies have been made about the wrong behavior of machines due to electromagnetic fields, the interferences in communication equipments, the possibility of the electromagnetic field hazard in human body, etc. There exist international standards about the RF equipments (ex. mobile phone, antenna, etc.). But, many researchers involved in power frequency electric and magnetic field only propose the prudential avoidance. In this paper, induced currents in a human body model due to magnetic fields in high speed railway are calculated by two dimensional impedance method. Power frequency(60Hz) magnetic fields are calculated and induced currents are simulated by Faraday's law. Induced currents are simulated with induced voltage, human body model impedances due to Ohm's law, magnetic fields derived from Biot-Savart's law and Transmission Line Method in high speed railway.

  • An autopilot system of a ship is very important for a safe and convenient navigation, which is realized with getting an azimuth data from a gyrocompass, a magnetic compass and a GPS(Global Positioning System) compass. Magnetic compass an azimuth error is generated by a vessel magnetism material such as steels. The magnetic pole is detected by the magnetic field sensor, it does not coincide with the true north, therefore, the detected azimuth data can not but accompany error. In this paper, in order to detect the minimum change of azimuth data which generates errors of azimuth information, a search algorithm using the Kalman Filtering method is utilized. The digital electronic compass is designed with the integration algorithm using the merits of an earth's magnetic field sensor and a GPS receiver.
