The discrete torque generation mechanism and inherently nonlinear magnetic characterization of switched reluctance motors lead to unacceptable torque ripples and limit the application of these motors. In this study, a phase current profiling technique and torque sharing function are proposed in consideration of magnetic saturation effects and by minimizing power loss in the commutation area between the adjacent phases. Constant torque trajectories are considered in incoming and outgoing phase current planes based on nonlinear T-i-theta curves obtained from experimental measurements. Optimum points on constant torque trajectories are selected by improving drive efficiency and minimizing copper loss in each rotor position. A novel analytic invertible function is introduced to express phase torque based on rotor position and its corresponding phase current. The optimization problem is solved by the proposed torque function, and optimum torque sharing functions are derived. A modification method is also introduced to enhance the torque ripple-free region based on simple logic rules. Compared with conventional torque sharing functions, the resultant reference current from the proposed method has less peak and effective values and exhibits lower copper loss. Experimental and simulation results from a four-phase 4 KW 8/6 SRM validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
This paper presents the preliminary studies on measurements of dynamic torque in the rotating shaft by utilizing the magnetic lattice. The intensity of torque can be detected as the phase differences between two magnetic sinusoidal signals recorded on magnetic tapes wound on the shaft. This research describes, from the data concerning with phase differences including noise, a method of signal processing to estimate the true value of the torque.
This paper deals with an experimental study on the friction torque characteristics of magnetic fluid seals for various oil temperatures, rotating speeds, and vacuum pressures. The friction torque of MFS was measured by high response torque meter. The experimental results show that, as the rotating speed increases, the friction torque of MFS increases and as the oil temperature increases, the friction torque of MFS decreases. Also, the experimental results show that the friction torque of Model-II is 1.73~2.56, 2.0~2.89, 2.0~3.25 times higher than those of Model-I under the atmospheric pressure, vacuum pressure ($10^{-4} and 10^{-6}$ torr), respectively.

This paper investigates the characteristics of cogging torque and magnetic force of a brushless DC (BLDC) motor due to imperfect magnetization of permanent magnet (PM) numerically and experimentally which results in the magnetically induced vibration. A predicted magnetization pattern of the PM of the BLDC motor, which is derived from the measured surface magnetic flux density along the PM, is applied to the finite element analysis in order to calculate the cogging torque and the unbalanced magnetic force. This research also develops the experimental setup to measure the unbalanced magnetic force as well as the cogging torque. It shows numerically and experimentally that the imperfect magnetization of permanent magnet generates the driving frequencies of cogging torque with integer multiple of slot number in addition to the least common multiple of pole and slot. It also shows that the driving frequencies of unbalanced magnetic force are integer multiple of slot number ${\pm}1$ due to imperfect magnetization of PM even in the rotationally symmetric design.

This paper presents a synchronous reluctance motor drive for maximum torque to current (MTC) considering magnetic saturation. Measured d-axis and q-axis inductances are used to obtain current angle vs. maximum torque curve using torque equation. Maximum torque to current control is achieved by the current angle and stator current for maximum torque from the current angle vs. maximum torque curve at a given torque reference.
This paper deals with a control method to reduce the torque ripple of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric power steering (EPS) systems. Such an application requires a very low torque ripple in order to maintain a good steering feel. However, because of spatial limitations, it cannot help having a partial saturation in the iron core of the PMSM for an EPS system, and this saturation results in a significant torque ripple. Thus, this paper analyzes the torque ripple caused by the magnetic saturation of a PMSM and proposes a method with respect to inductance measurement to verify the partial saturation. In addition, it is shown that a compensation current is needed in order to minimize the torque ripple when a PMSM is driven in the high torque region. The estimation process of the current and the torque ripple decreased by the current are presented and verified with test results.

Transverse flux machine (TFM) has been considered as a promising driving machine especially at the low-speed applications because it has higher power density, torque and efficiency than the conventional electrical motors. However, it has complicated structure, large torque ripple and sometimes unbalanced magnetic force due to its inherent structure. This paper investigates the characteristics of torque ripple and unbalanced magnetic force of a rotatory two-phase TFM due to the teeth geometry by using the 3-dimensional finite element method, and it develops a rotatory two-phase TFM with herringbone teeth to reduce the torque ripple as well as to eliminate the unbalanced magnetic force.
This paper presents the torque calculation and parametric analysis of synchronous permanent magnet couplings (SPMCs). Based on a magnetic vector potential, we obtained the analytical magnetic field solutions produced by permanent magnets (PMs). Then, the analytical solutions for a magnetic torque were obtained. All analytical results were extensively validated with the non-linear a two-dimensional (2D) finite element analysis (FEA). In particular, test results such as torque measurements are presented that confirm the analysis. Finally, using the derived analytical magnetic torque solutions, we carried out a parametric analysis to determine the influence of the design parameters on the SPMC's behavior.
Spin-transfer torque is a useful tool to control the magnetic state in nanostructures. In magnetic tunnel junctions, the spin-transfer torque has two components, the in-plane spin torque and the perpendicular spin torque. While properties of the in-plane spin-transfer torque are relatively well understood, properties of the perpendicular spin-transfer torque still remain controversial. A recent experiment demonstrated that in asymmetric magnetic tunnel junctions, the bias voltage dependence of the perpendicular spin-transfer torque contains both linear and quadratic terms in the bias. However it still remains unexplored how the bias voltage dependence changes as a function of material parameters. In this paper, we systematically investigate the perpendicular spin-transfer torque in asymmetric magnetic tunnel junction by varying spin splitting energy, work function difference, and Fermi energy of the ferromagnetic metal leads.

Rotatory two-phase transverse flux machine(TFM) is a relatively new type of motor with high power density, high torque, and low speed in comparison to conventional electrical motors. However, it has some shortcomings,.i.e. complex construction and high possibility of the magnetically induced nitration due to its inherent structure. This Paper investigates the characteristics of the magnetic force and the torque in the rotatory two-phase TFM by using the 3-D finite element method and the spectral analysis. This research shows that the average torque decreases and that the torque ripple increases as the phase delay increases. It also shows that the unbalanced magnetic force is one of the dominant excitation forces in this machine. And it proposes a new topology of rotatory two-phase TFM to eliminate the unbalanced magnetic force.
