Numerical Calculation of the Deflected Path of Electrons through Water under External Magnetic Fields

  • The study on magnetic field combined radiation therapy, as a new technique to modify the dose distributions using external magnetic field, has been investigated. The goal of the study is to develop the techniques for dose localization, as a particle beam, from the strong magnetic fields. In this study, in order to study the principle of dose deposition in external fields, as a basic approach, we have calculated approximately the paths of traveling electrons in water under external magnetic fields with numerical methods. The calculations are performed for a primary particle by cumulating the steps which are defined as small path lengths which energy loss can be ignored. In this calculation, the energy loss and direction change for a step was calculated by using total stopping power and Lorentz force equation respectively. We have examined the deflected paths of the electron through water as a function of external magnetic field and incident electron s energy. Since we did not take account of the multiple scattering effects for electrons through water, there are errors in this calculation. However, from the results we can explain the principle of dose variation and dose focusing for electron beams under strong magnetic fields in water.

Characteristics of IEF Patterns and SDS-PAGE Results of Korean EPO Biosimilars

  • Erythropoietin (EPO) is mainly produced in kidney and stimulates erythropoiesis. The use of recombinant EPOs for doping is prohibited because of its performance enhancing effect. This study investigated whether biosimilar EPOs could be differentiated from endogenous one by iso-electro-focusing plus double blotting and SDS-PAGE for antidoping analysis. The established method was validated with positive control urine. The band patterns were reproducible and meet the criteria, which was made by world anti doping agency (WADA). Isoelectric focusing was conducted in pH range 2 to 6. Recormon (La Roche), Aropotin (Kunwha), Epokine (CJ Pharm Co.), Eporon (Dong-A), Espogen (LG Life Sciences), and Dynepo (Shire Pharmaceuticals) were detected in basic region. All biosimilars showed discriminative isoelectric profiles from endogenous EPO profiles, but they showed different band patterns with the reference one except Epokine (CJ Pharm Co.). Next, SDS-PAGE of biosimilar EPOs resulted in different molecular weight patterns which were distributed higher than endogenous EPO. Commercial immune assay kit as an immune affinity purification tool and immobilized antibody coated magnetic bead were tested for the purification and concentration of EPO from urinary matrix. The antibody-coated magnetic bead gave better purification yield. The IEF plus double blotting and SDS-PAGE with immunoaffinity purification method established can be used to discriminate biosimilar EPOs from endogenous EPO.

  • Recently large size color TV and computer monitor are very popular and a lot techniques are being developed to get a high quality picture on the screen through reducing the convergence error among the red, green and blue beams and achieving a high focusing. One of the techniques is considering the mutual effects of the components of the Brown tube. The magnetic deflection yoke, especially, stands immediately next to the electron gun and generates the leakage magnetic fields at the electron gun which affects the trajectories of the electron beams inside the gun. Hence a shield cup made of thin conducting plate is located at the end of electron gun in order to shield the leakage flux from the deflection yoke. Since the red, green and blue beams are placed unsymmetrically the shielding effects of the shield cup on the beams are not same and eddy current controller, made of thin conducting plate, is auxiliary placed inside the shield cup. In this paper a transient magnetic field analysis algorithm is developed using boundary element method, and applied to the analysis of the shielding effects of the eddy current controller of shield cup in an electron gun.

  • Condenser lens and objective lens are used to demagnify the image of the crossover to the final spot size. In lens, electrons are focused by magnetic fields. This fields is fringing field. It is important in electron focusing. Electron focusing occurs the radial component field and axial component field. Radial component produces rotational force and axial component produces radial force. Radial force causes the electron's trajectory to curve toward the optic axis and corss it. Focal length decreases as the current of lens increases. In this paper, we use the focal length for desiging the hardware of lens current control and present the results.

  • This paper reports the high sensitivity actuator for flexible disk. The air stabilized flexible optical disk has very small axial runout. Therefore, It is proper to develop an actuator which has high sensitivity in tracking direction rather than in focusing direction. In order to maximize driving force in radial direction, we present an efficient design of magnetic circuit with simple multi-polarized magnets and auxiliary magnets. Designed magnetic circuit has big force in tracking direction. And we shift 2$^{nd}$ resonance frequency of moving parts Into high frequency band, not causing increase of mass and discord between force and mass centers to secure high sensitivities and sufficient control bandwidth. Finally, experimental results show that designed actuator has superior sensitivity in tracking direction.

  • Hepatic hemangiomas infrequently exhibit atypical imaging features, which may cause diagnostic confusion with hepatic malignancies and lead to unnecessary surgery. We report a rare case of multilocular cystic hemangioma of the liver mimicking a mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver in a 48-year-old female, focusing on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging features and their differential diagnosis.

  • In this report we present a case of disseminated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in a 79-year-old man affecting the bone, soft tissue, testis, and both kidneys, which are rarely affected sites. The formation of a large mass in the bone, soft tissue, and testis due to DLBCL is rarely seen nowadays. In this article, we describe the imaging findings and clinical significance of multifocal extranodal involvement in DLBCL, focusing on involvement of bone, soft tissue, and testis.

Physics of Solar Flares

  • In this talk we outline the current understanding of solar flares, mainly focusing on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes. A flare causes plasma heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration which generates high-energy particles. The key physical processes producing a flare are: the emergence of magnetic field from the solar interior to the solar atmosphere (flux emergence), formation of current-concentrated areas (current sheets) in the corona, and magnetic reconnection proceeding in a current sheet to cause shock heating, mass ejection, and particle acceleration. A flare starts with the dissipation of electric currents in the corona, followed by various dynamic processes that affect lower atmosphere such as the chromosphere and photosphere. In order to understand the physical mechanism for producing a flare, theoretical modeling has been develops, where numerical simulation is a strong tool in that it can reproduce the time-dependent, nonlinear evolution of a flare. In this talk we review various models of a flare proposed so far, explaining key features of individual models. We introduce the general properties of flares by referring observational results, then discuss the processes of energy build-up, release, and transport, all of which are responsible for a flare. We will come to a concluding viewpoint that flares are the manifestation of the recovering and ejecting processes of a global magnetic flux tube in the solar atmosphere, which has been disrupted via interaction with convective plasma while rising through the convection zone.

  • 유방의 악성 섬유성 조직구종은 극히 드문 질환으로 이전에 보고된 대부분의 증례들은 임상병리학적 특성에 초점을 맞추어 이 질환의 영상소견에 대한 분석은 제한적이었다. 우리는 좌측 전완부로 부터 전이된 좌측 유방과 좌측 액와부의 악성 섬유성 조직구종 1예를 유방촬영, 유방 초음파 및 유방 자기공명영상 등의 영상의학적 소견에 초점을 맞추어 보고 하고자 한다.

Petrography and mineral chemistry of the granitic rocks in the Poeun-Sogrisan Area, Korea

  • The granitic rocks in the Poeun - Sogrisan area are composed of the Jurassic Poeun granodiorite and the Cretaceous Sogrisan granites. The latter can be divided into three rock types : coarse-grained biotite granite, porphritic biotite granite and granite porphyry. Petrographical observations, especially focusing on the quartz-feldspar intergrowth texture, suggest that the Sogrisan granites has emplaced at shallower level and crystallized more rapidly than the Poeun granodiorite. The F, Cl contents and the Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratio of biotite and muscovite in the Sogrisan granites are higher than those in the Poeun granodiorite. The anor-thite contents of plagioclase in the Poeun granodiorite are higher then in the Sogrisan granites. Ilmenite in the Sogrisan granites is more enriched in Mn and depleted in Fe than that in the Poeun granodiorite. The whole-rock magnetic susceptibility values (in $10^{-6}$ emu/g unit) are higher in the Sogrisan granites (33~144) than the Poeun granodiorite (9~12), indicating that the former generally belongs to magnetite-series granitoid and the latter to ilmenite-series one. The Sogrisan granites has solidified under more oxidizing environment than the Poeun gra-nodiorite, judging from the whole-rock magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as the chemical compositions of biotite and ilmenite.
