  • Background: Panax ginseng (ginseng) is a traditional medicine that is reported to have cardioprotective effects; ginsenosides are the major bioactive compounds in the ginseng root. Methods: Magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) nanoparticles might be useful for both the extraction of the targeted (imprinted) molecules, and for the delivery of those molecules to cells. In this work, plant growth regulators were used to enhance the adventitious rooting of ginseng root callus; imprinted polymeric particles were synthesized for the extraction of ginsenoside Rb1 from root extracts, and then employed for subsequent particle-mediated delivery to cardiomyocytes to mitigate hypoxia/reoxygenation injury. Results: These synthesized composite nanoparticles were first characterized by their specific surface area, adsorption capacity, and magnetization, and then used for the extraction of ginsenoside Rb1 from a crude extract of ginseng roots. The ginsenoside-loaded MMIPs were then shown to have protective effects on mitochondrial membrane potential and cellular viability for H9c2 cells treated with CoCl2 to mimic hypoxia injury. The protective effect of the ginsenosides was assessed by staining with JC-1 dye to monitor the mitochondrial membrane potential. Conclusion: MMIPs can play a dual role in both the extraction and cellular delivery of therapeutic ginsenosides.

  • The formation of bonding configurations such as pyridinic-N, pyrrolic-N, and graphitic-N by nitrogen doping plays a crucial role in imparting distinct physical properties to carbon nanomaterials. In this study, we propose a simple and cost-effective approach to regulate nitrogen dopant configurations in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by mixing melamine as a dopant source. We employed three distinct mechanical mixing techniques, namely magnetic stirring, bath sonication and tip sonication. The higher the ratio of melamine to CNT, the higher the ratio of Pyrrolic-N, and when mixed through stirring, the highest ratio of Pyridinic-N was shown. The facile method proposed in this study, which can easily form various types of nitrogen dopants in carbon nanotubes, is expected to facilitate the application of nitrogen-doped carbon nanomaterials.

  • The soft magnetic FeSiCr were processed the ball-mill for 30 hours and the shape of FeSiCr particles was changed from sphere to flake type, which was observed using scanning electron microscope. The complex permittivity and permeability spectra and reflection loss of FeSiCr-rubber composite was measured using Network Analyzer in order to investigate the relationship between the microwave absorption and the material constants. The matching frequency shifted toward lower frequency range with microwave absorber thickness, and microwave absorber with FeSiCr-rubber composite showed a maxium reflection loss of -8.3 dB at 1.86 GHz for a 1.3 mm thickness.

  • The objective of this paper is to review the magnetic and magneto-transport properties of Co/$Co_2TiSn$ consisting of two metallic magnetic phases that are antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled at the phase boundary. The bulk Co/$Co_2TiSn$ system, which has a $Co_2$TiSn Heusler alloy precipitates in the hexagonal Co matrix, showed an unusual coercivity change with a concurrent change in temperature, and was modeled on the basis of a wall formation caused by exchange coupling at the phase boundary. For measurements of magneto-transport properties, Co/$Co_2TiSn$ thin films that had two-magnet phases were deposited using a magnetron sputtering system with a composite target. The magnetization process in the films is also explained on the basis of the model of wall formation at the phase boundary. Annealed Co/$Co_2TiSn$ films showed a 0.12% GMR effect, indicating the scattering of polarized conduction electrons due to the antiparallel exchange coupling at the phase boundary. The scattering process of conduction electrons at the phase boundary was modeled with relation to the magnetization process.

  • Rare earth (RE) - transition metal based high energy density magnets are of immense significance in various engineering applications. $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ magnets possess the highest energy product and are widely used in whole industries. Simultaneously, composite alloys that are cheap, cost effective and strong commercially available have drawn great attention, because rare-earth metals are costly, less abundant and strategic shortage. We designed rare-earth free alloys and fabrication process and developed novel route to prepare $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ powders by wet process employing spray drying and reduction-diffusion (R-D) without the use of high purity metals as raw material. MnAl-base permanent magnetic powders are potentially important material for rare-earth free magnets. We have prepared the nano-sized MnAl powders by plasma arc discharge and micron-sized MnAl powders by gas atomization. They showed good magnetic property, compared with that from conventional processes. $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ powders with high coercivity of more than 10 kOe were successfully synthesized by adjusting R-D step, followed by precise washing system. It is considered that this process can be applied for the recycling of RE-elements extracted from ewaste including motors.

  • In this letter, a laterally-driven bistable electromagnetic microrelay is designed, fabricated, and tested. The proposed microrelay consists of a pair of arch-shaped leaf springs, a shuttle, and a contact bar made from silicon, low temperature oxide (LTO), and gold composite materials. Silicon-on-insulator wafers are used for electrical isolation and releasing of the moving microstructures. The high-aspect-ratio microstructures are fabricated using a deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process. The tandem-typed leaf springs with a silicon/gold composite layer enhance the mechanical performances while reducing the electrical resistance. A permanent magnet is attached at the bottom of the silicon substrate, resulting in the generation of an external magnetic field in the direction vertical to the surface of the silicon substrate. The leaf springs show bistable characteristics. The resistance of the pair of leaf springs was $7.5\;{\Omega}$, and the contact resistance was $7.7\;{\Omega}$. The relay was operated at ${\pm}0.12\;V$.

  • The fabrication process of particulate metal matrix composites(PMMCs) with homogeneous distribution of reinforcement and reheating for thixoforming has been studied. Both of eletro-magnetic stirring and mechanical stirring were used to fabricate particulate metal matrix composites(PMMCs) for variation of particle size. The electrical and mechanical processing conditions for fabricating PMMCs are also suggested. For thixoforming of PMMCs, fabricated bi1lets are reheated by using the designed optimal coil with as function of length between PMMC billet and coil surface, and coil diameter and billet. The effect of reinforcement distribution according to variation of billet temperature were investigated with solid fraction theory with a function of matrix alloy and volume fraction of reinforcement.

  • Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were used as dielectric lossy materials and NiFe particles were used as magnetic lossy materials. Total twelve specimens for the three types such as dielectric, magnetic and mixed radar absorbing materials (RAMs) were fabricated. Their complex permittivities and permeabilities in the range of $2{\sim}18$ GHz were measured using the transmission line technique. The parametric studios for reflection loss characteristics of each specimen to design the single-layered RAMs were performed. The mixed RAMs generally showed the improved absorbing characteristics with thinner matching thickness. One of the mixed RAMs, MD3with the thickness of 2.00 mm had the 10 dB absorbing bandwidth of 4.0 GHz in the X-band ($8.2{\sim}12.4$ GHz). It also showed very broad 10 dB absorbing bandwidth as wide as 6.0 GHz in the Ku-band ($12.0{\sim}18.0$ GHz) with the thickness tuning to 1.49 mm. The experimental results for selected several specimens were in very good agreements with simulation ones in terms of the overall reflection loss characteristics and 10 dB absorbing bandwidth.

  • The term 'shape memory polymers (SMPs)' describes a class of polymers which can remember the original shape and recover from deformed to its original shape by the applied stimuli, e.g., heat, electricity, magnetic field, light, etc. SMPs are classified as one of the 'smart polymers' and have great potentials as high-value-added materials. Especially, low thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties of SMPs can be improved by incorporating the various fillers. This paper aims to review the SMPs and their basic principles, and the trends of the development of SMPs nanocomposites.

  • A unified mathematical model of phase-lag Green-Naghdi magneto-thermoelasticty theories based on fractional derivative heat transfer for perfectly conducting media in the presence of a constant magnetic field is given. The GN theories as well as the theories of coupled and of generalized magneto-thermoelasticity with thermal relaxation follow as limit cases. The resulting nondimensional coupled equations together with the Laplace transforms techniques are applied to a half space, which is assumed to be traction free and subjected to a thermal shock that is a function of time. The inverse transforms are obtained by using a numerical method based on Fourier expansion techniques. The predictions of the theory are discussed and compared with those for the generalized theory of magneto-thermoelasticity with one relaxation time. The effects of Alfven velocity and the fractional order parameter on copper-like material are discussed in different types of GN theories.
