A magnetic fluid separation technology was confirmed to be very effective to remove the suspended solids (SS) from aquacultural recirculating water, In this study, the effects of operating variables on the characteristics of SS removal were investigated through the test runs using magnetite of 2 $\mu$m mean diameter as magnetic powder. Magnetic flocculation here formed by adsorbing fine magnetites on the surface of suspended solid was observed. The strength of magnet was of significance in determining the SS removal efficiency as well as the capacity of the equipment. In addition, the SS removal efficiency decreased with an increase in the superficial liquid velocity, but the effect became negligible when the mass ratio of magnetite to the suspended solids was higher than 1.0.
Metal-p-$NH_2$-Bn-DOTA (paraammionobenzyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid: ABDOTA) complex was synthesized and purified for bio-tagging to quantify biological target materials using laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS. Since the preparation of a pure and stable tagging complex is the key procedure for quantification, magnetic particles were used to purify the synthesized metal-ABDOTA complex. The magnetic particles immobilized with the complex attracted to a permanent magnet, resulting in fast separation from free un-reacted metal ions in solution. Gd ions formed the metal-complex with a higher yield of 64.3% (${\pm}3.9%$ relative standard deviation (RSD)) than Y ions, 52.3% (${\pm}2.5%$ RSD), in the pH range 4-7. The complex bound to the magnetic particles was released by treatment with a strong base, of which the recovery was 81.7%. As a reference, a solid phase extraction (SPE) column packed with Chelex-100 resin was employed for separation under similar conditions and produced comparable results. The tagging technique complemented polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microarray chip sampling in LA-ICP-MS, allowing determination of small sample volumes at high throughputs. For application, immunoglobulin G (IgG) was immobilized on the pillars of PDMS microarray chips and then tagged with the prepared Gd complex. IgG could then be determined through measurement of Gd by LA-ICP-MS. A detection limit of 1.61 ng/mL (${\pm}0.75%$ RSD) for Gd was obtained.
We have designed, fabricated and demonstrated a novel micro-system for programmable magnetic actuation using magnetic elliptical pathways on Si substrates. Lithographically patterned soft NiFe ellipses are arranged sequentially perpendicular to each other as stepping stones for the transport of magnetic beads. We have measured the magnetization curve of the ellipsoid ($9\;{\mu}m{\times}4\;{\mu}m{\times}0.1\;{\mu}m$) elements with respect to the long and short axes of the ellipse. We found that the magnetization in the long axis direction is larger than that in the short axis direction for an applied field of ${\leq}$ 1,000 Oe, causing a force on carriers that causes them to move from one element to another. We have successfully demonstrated a micro-system for the magnetic actuation of biomolecule carriers of superparamagnetic beads (Dynabead$^{(R)}$ 2.8 ${\mu}m$) by rotating the external magnetic field. This novel concept of magnetic actuation is useful for future integrated lab-on-a-chip systems for biomolecule manipulation, separation and analysis.

Magnetic nanoparticle based bioseparation in microfluidics is a multiphysics phenomenon that involves interplay of various parameters. The ability to understand the dynamics of these parameters is a prerequisite for designing and developing more efficient magnetic cell/bio-particle separation systems. Therefore, in this work proof-of-concept experiments are combined with advanced numerical simulation to design and optimize the capturing process of magnetic nanoparticles responsible for efficient microfluidic bioseparation. A low cost generic microfluidic platform was developed using a novel micromolding method that can be done without a clean room techniques and at much lower cost and time. Parametric analysis using both experiments and theoretical predictions were performed. It was found that flow rate and magnetic field strength greatly influence the transport of magnetic nanoparticles in the microchannel and control the capturing efficiency. The results from mathematical model agree very well with experiments. The model further demonstrated that a 12% increase in capturing efficiency can be achieved by introducing of iron-grooved bar in the microfluidic setup that resulted in increase in magnetic field gradient. The numerical simulations were helpful in testing and optimizing key design parameters. Overall, this work demonstrated that a simple low cost experimental proof-of-concept setup can be synchronized with advanced numerical simulation not only to enhance the functional performance of magneto-fluidic capturing systems but also to efficiently design and develop microfluidic bioseparation systems for biomedical applications.
Radioactive Corrosion Products (CRUD) which are generated by the neutron activation of general corrosion products at the nuclear power plant are the major source of occupational radiation exposure. Most of the CRUD has a characteristic of showing strong ferrimagnetisms. Along with the new development and production of permanent magnet (rare earth magnet) which generates much stronger magnetic field than the conventional magnet, new type of magnetic filter that can separate CRUD efficiently and eventually reduce radiation exposure of personnel at nuclear power plant is suggested. This separator consists of inner and outer magnet assemblies, coolant channel and container surrounding the outer magnet assembly. The rotational motion of the inner and outer permanent magnet assemblies surrounding the coolant channel by driving motor system produces moving alternating magnetic fields in the coolant channel. The CRUD can be separated from the coolant by the moving alternating magnetic field. This study describes the results of preliminary experiment performed with the different flow rates of coolant and rotation velocities of magnet assemblies. This new magnetic filter shows better performance results of filtering the magnetite at coolant (water). How rates, rotating velocities of magnet assemblies and particle sizes turn out to be very important design parameters.

Purpose of this study is to find the mitigation method of magnetic field by finite length multi-conductors such as indoor distribution lines and to be applicable to design of the distribution lines. For this purpose, exact formula about the components $B_x$, $B_y$, $B_z$ of magnetic field need in case of straight line-conductor with finite length forward any direction. In this study simple formula of the components were deduced and by using these formula magnetic fields for various models of line-configurations were calculated. And also a calculation method of induced currents in conductive shield was presented and using this method, programing of calculation is relatively easy and calculation time is short. The magnetic field after cancellation by these induced currents was calculated. All of calculations were performed by Matlab 7.0 programs. Through the calculation results it could be obtained followings for the mitigation of magnetic fields. The separation between conductors ought to be smaller than smaller as possible. In case of 3-phase, delta configuration is more effective than flat configuration. In case of 3-phase, unbalanced currents ought to be reduced as possible.. In case of more than two circuits of 3-phase, adequate locations of each phase-conductor such as rotating configuration of 3-phase conductors are more effective. The magnetic shielding effect of the conductive shielding sheet is very high.
This paper is to present the general descriptions and their research trend of MRl/NMR which has already commercialized and also is more successful than any other applications of superconducting magnet, Superconducting Single Crystal Growing Equipment and Superconducting Magnetic Separation technology which are practically used in the related areas, and power electric application machine, which is the most effective and efficient one among the applications using high magnetic field. Therefore, it is hoped that this study will help to establish the ground of the industrial application of superconductivity in Korea.

On the basis of equilibrium equations for static electric and magnetic fields, two unknown functions related to electric and magnetic fields were firstly introduced to rewrite the governing equations, boundary conditions and initial conditions for mechanical field. Then by introducing a dependent variable and a special function satisfying the inhomogeneous mechanical boundary conditions, the governing equation for a new variable with homogeneous mechanical boundary conditions is obtained. By using the separation of variables technique as well as the electric and magnetic boundary conditions, the dynamic problem of a functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic hollow sphere under spherically symmetric deformation is transformed to two Volterra integral equations of the second kind about two unknown functions of time. Cubic Hermite polynomials are adopted to approximate the two undetermined functions at each time subinterval and the recursive formula for solving the integral equations is derived. Transient responses of displacements, stresses, electric and magnetic potentials are completely determined at the end. Numerical results are presented and discussed.
