  • The PM(Permanent Magnet) stepping Motor has been used widely to a variety of industries because of the open-loop control characteristic, a relatively large frequency range of velocity control and non-accumulated error of the step angle. Moreover, It has been gradually applied to office automation, machine intelligence, digital appliance, and automobile parts. This paper presents the optimal design results by use of the experimental method. The design variables of the PM stepping motor are shape of the claw-pole, material of core, and air-gap. As a result, a superior claw-pole PM stepping motor for OA machinery was developed.

  • Since discovery, NdFeB permanent magnet has replaced application of the conventional magnets rapidly because of its superior physical and mechanical properties. With increasing consumption of power combined with energy resource depletion, energy efficiency is becoming more and more inportant. According to recent reports, almost almost half of the electric power is consumed by motor, and NdFeB magnets which are the core component of the motor play a key role on improving energy efficiency of the devices. In parallel with finding alternatives energy resources, research works improving energy efficiecy have been conducted world wide. Althogh NdFeB magnets usage have been expanded to various applications, key materials such as Nd and Dy, resouces lean heavily on specific area, China. Magnetic industry revently experienced skyrocketing price fluctuatioin of rare earth at around 2008. Chineses government's regulations worsened the situation and arose a necessity to develop methods to minimize rare earth use. In this presentation, POSCO's recent research works on rare earth reduction is presented including novel powder alloying method using nitrate precursors. Also, future R&D plans for rare earth free magnets is briefly introduced as well.

  • In this paper, finite element modeling was performed for vibration analysis of a rotor system installed in sunroof motor, and analysis process was developed for natural frequency and unbalance response analysis. At the same time, to reduce analysis modeling error caused by the difference between analysis and measured values, finite element model updating was conducted using an optimization algorithm, i.e. hybrid genetic algorithm and simulated annealing (HGASA) method. For this end experimental modal test was carried out and by using the measured frequency response function (FRF), model updating was performed considering both cases where core coil was removed and included. And acceptable result was obtained. Also, dynamic property coefficient of bush bearing which influences vibration response of the rotor system was estimated.

  • The purpose of this paper is characteristic analysis of multi-disk axial-gap pm motor for turbo compressor. The axial-gap permanent magnet motor has shown a growing interest in high-speed application for its high-efficiency, compact size and low vibration characteristics due to core-less structure. To achieve high-power, the axial-gap PM motor has multi-disk structure of stator and rotor disk. Because of its complicated magnetic flux path, it is not easy to calculate a dynamic characteristics using finite element analysis. In this paper, the simplified 2-D unfolded model to predict EMF characteristic is presented. To verify thesuggested 2-D unfolded model analysis of back-EMF characteristic was calculated and compared 3-D finite element. Finally the proposed method is verified by experimental results and shows good agreement with test results.

  • In this work the AC loss measurement setup based on an iron core background magnet, not used in a conventional one, has been successfully developed. To prove its validity, a round-robin test for the same Bi-2223 tape sample among three institutes has been done. The results show that the self-field and magnetization losses from the developed setup well agree with the losses measured at two other institutes of Korea Basic Science Institute and Yokohama National University. The measured magnetization losses for parallel or perpendicular fields can be well predicted from the slab model or the strip model for a filamentary region. However the magnetization losses for longitudinal fields can be rather predicted by the slab model for a decoupled filament. The self-field losses are well explained by the Norris ellipse model.

  • An axial-flux permanent-magnet machine(AFPM) topology with coreless winding is proposed. In the proposed AFPM configuration. the winding consists of a hexagon-shaped coils encapsulated in fiber-reinforced epoxy resin. Due to the lack of the iron core. the overall machine structure has high compactness and lightness. The simplified design calculation of the back emf was obtained. In this study, motor design was carried out using the software package Maxwell. This paper discusses the basic design of coil winding of AFPM motor. Experimental results were taken form a prototype machine rated 0.4 Nm, 2000 rpm.

  • This paper describes for new design method to improve respones characteristics of moving-magnet type LDM with volume reduction of slider back iron. To achieve the constant thrust of LDM through restraining saturation at the center core of stator excitation coil, double sided stator winding of LDM is proposed. We constructed new type LDM to prove the validity of design process. Analysis results through measurement and simulation of proposed multi-separated winding LDM were proved excellent in response characteristics and static thrust.

  • In this paper, a new design of permanent magnetic actuator (PMA) for vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) with one coil is proposed. Electromagnetic characteristic analysis is performed numerically using finite element method (FEM) considering the nonlinearity of magnetic core and permanent magnet. The characteristics of proposed PMA with one coil is similar with that of the conventional PMA with two coils. The proposed PMA can simplify the control circuit because of the usage of one coil. Therefore, the reliability of VCB can be improved with the proposed model.

  • This paper proposes a new method to compute the static thrust of a hybrid-type LPM by the coenergy method, which can be applied to a nonlinear programming of the optimization techniques for the optimal design. In the process of the computation, the magnetic nonlinearities of the permanent magnet, the primary and the secondary core are interpolated by the cubic spline method. And then, the equivalent magnetic circuit including the airgap reluctance which is a function of the displacement is modelled by the permeance method. The static thrust which is a derivative of the coenergy is computed by the Newton Raphson method at each displacement. To verify this proposed method, the results of the compjutation are compaction with those of the experiment obtained from the DLPM with 2 phase and 4 poles.

  • In this paper, the fabrication of a micro actuator with a micro electromagnet and an actuator diaphragm is presented. The micro electromagnet consists of a magnetic core and a micro inductive planar coil. The actuator diaphragm is the p+ silicon diaphragm on both sides of which magnetostrictive materials are deposited by sputtering. The micro electromagnet is fabricated by sputtering, evaporating, etching and electroplating. The magnetic flux density of the micro electromagnet is measured by using the gauss meter. The deflection of the actuator diaphragm is measured by using the laser vibrometer and optic microscope.
