  • Mg thin films were prepared on SPCC(cold-rolled steel) substrates by vasuum evapoaration and ion-plating. The influence of argon gas pressure and substrates bias voltage on the crystal orientation and morphology of the film was determined by using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron micrography (SEM), respectively. And the effect of crystal orientation and morphology of the Mg thin films on corrosion behavior was estimated by measuring the anodic polarization curves in deaerated 3% NaCl solution. The crystal orientation of the Mg films deposited at high argon gas pressure exhibited a (002) preferred orientation, regardless of the substrate bias voltage. Film morphology changed from a columnar to a granular structure with the increase of argon gas pressure. The morphology of the films depended not only on argon gas pressure but also bias voltage ; i.e., the effect of increasing bias voltage was similar to that of decreasing argon gas pressure. The influences of argon gas pressure and bias voltage were explained by applying the adsorption inhibitor theory and the sputter theory. And also, this showed that the corrosion resistance of the Mg thin films can be changed by controlling the crystal orientaton and morphology.

  • The panels were fabricated to characterize the contamination of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) thin films by phosphors and ion bombardments in AC-PDPs. Forty-six inch WVGA panels of the surface and vertical discharge type were manufactured. The experiment was designed to investigate the relationship between the MgO thin films and phosphor contamination caused by ion bombardments in a plasma environment to produce a life time test. The contamination of MgO thin films by phosphors was investigated by way of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

  • Magnesium oxide thin films were deposited with different thickness and oxygen flow rates for investigating the effects of the electrical resistivity of MgO thin films in AC-PDPs. The surface roughness was characterized by AFM. It reveals that higher oxygen flow rate generates higher electrical resistivity of MgO thin films.

  • MgO thin films were deposited using $Mg(tmhd)_2$ as a precursor dissolved in a solvent by electrostatic spray pyrolysis. When a pure tetra hydro furan was used as a solvent, a large number of particles appeared on the MgO thin film surface due to homogeneous nucleation. However, by adding 1-butyl alcohol or 1-octyl alcohol to THF, homogeneous nucleation was restricted and the number density of the large particles was also drastically reduced. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the MgO films had a (100) preferred orientation regardless of the type of solvents used. Characterization using Fourier Transformed-Infrared and spectroscopic photometer revealed that the crystallized MgO thin films on the glass substrate had a high optical transmittance (> 85 %) in the visible range. Discharge characteristics of MgO thin films deposited by ESP method on an alternating-current plasma display panel were compared with a MgO thin film prepared by reactive radio-frequency planar magnetron sputtering.

  • Superconducting $MgB_2$ thin films were fabricated by using a novel aerosol deposition technique wherein the pre-reacted powder is directly transformed into respective thin film. The formed thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction technique and FE-SEM to understand its structure and morphology and the superconducting behavior has been characterized with the four probe resistivity measurement. The as-deposited thin films were formed into the frustrated amorphous structure, which were relaxed on the further heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs. The relaxed amorphous $MgB_2$ thin films showed a comparatively high superconducting onset at about 38 K.

  • MgO thin films were deposited on glass and (100) Si substrates by an Arc Ion Plating (AIP) equipment using a magnesium metal target at various oxygen gas flow. In this work, we investigated the relationship between the structural properties and the discharge characteristics of MgO coating layers. X-ray diffraction and AFM have been used to study behaviors of the structure and surface morphology. The optical transmittance and the ion induced secondary electron emission coefficient of the MgO films have been also measured. The resistivity of the deposited MgO films was gradually increased from 0.17 G ohm/${\square}$ to 0.35 G ohm/${\square}$ with the oxygen gas flow. The growth rate of the MgO coating layer was decreased with increasing the oxygen gas flow, while the optical transmittance was improved.

  • The $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films with the various content ratio ranging from 0 to 0.4 were prepared by sol-gel spincoating method. To investigate the effects of content ratio on the structural and optical properties of the $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and photoluminescence (PL) were carried out. With increase in the content ratio, the grain size of the $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films was increased, however, at the content ratio above 0.2, MgO particles with cubic structure were formed on the surface of the $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films, indicating that the Mg content exceeded its solubility limit in the thin films. The residual stress of the $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films is increased with increase in the Mg mole fraction. In the PL investigations, the bandgap and the activation energy of the $Mg_xZn_{1-x}O$ thin films was increased with the Mg mole fraction.

  • A high rate deposition sputtering process of magnesium oxide thin film in oxide mode has been developed using a 20 kW unipolar pulsed power supply. The power supply was operated at a maximum constant voltage of 500 V and a constant current of 40 A. The pulse repetition rate and the duty were changed in the ranges of $10{\sim}50\;kHz$ and $10{\sim}60%$, respectively. The deposition rate increased with rising incident power to the target. Maximum incident power to the magnesium target was obtained by the control of frequency, duty and current. The deposition rate of a moving state was 9 nm m/min at the average power of 1.5 kW.

  • To improve the corrosion resistance of an electrogalvanized steel sheet, we deposited magnesium film on it using a vacuum evaporation method and annealed the films at $250-330^{\circ}C$. The zinc-magnesium alloy is consequently formed by diffusion of magnesium into the zinc coating. From the anodic polarization test in 3% NaCl solution, the films annealed at $270-310^{\circ}C$ showed better corrosion resistance than others. In X-ray diffraction analysis, $ZnMg_2$ was detected through out the temperature range, whereas $Mg_2Zn_{11}$ and $FeZn_{13}$ were detected only in the film annealed at $310^{\circ}C$. The depth composition profile showed that the compositions of Mg at $270-290^{\circ}C$ are evenly and deeply distributed in the film surface layer. These results demonstrate that $270-290^{\circ}C$ is a proper temperature range to produce a layer of $MgZn_2$ intermetallic compound to act as a homogeneous passive layer.

  • Currently, the flexible organic light emitting devices (OLEDs) are investigated. They are very vulnerable to moisture, and thus have been found to show some problems. Thus, an effective barrier layer is needed to protect from moisture in air. We deposited thin films with magnesium oxide (MgO) and silicon oxide $(SiO_{2})$ compounds mixed at various mixture ratios on flexible polyether sulfone (PES) substrates by an electron-beam evaporator to investigate their applizability for transparent barrier applications. In this study, we found that as the MgO fraction increased, thin films comprised of MgO and $(SiO_{2})$ compounds became more amorphous and their surface morphologies become smoother and denser. In addition, zirconium oxide $(ZrO_{2})$ was added to the above-mentioned compound mixtures. $ZrO_{2}$ made thin mixture films more amorphous and made the surface morphology denser and more uniform. The water vapor transmission rates (WVTRs) of the whole films decreased rapidly. The best WVTR was obtained by depositing thin films of Mg-Si-Zr-O compound among the whole thin films. As the thin mixture films became more amorphous, and the surface morphology become denser and more uniform, the WVTRs decreased. Therefore, the thin mixture films became more suitable for flexible OLED applications as transparent passivation layers against moisture in air.
