An investigation of the effects of transverse magnetic field and Peltier effect on melt convection and macrosegregation in vertical Bridgman crystal grosth of Te doped InSb was been carried out by means of microstructure observation, Hall measurement, electrical resistivity measurement and X-ray analysis. Before the experiments, Interface stability, convective instability and suppression of convection by magnetic field were calculated theoretically. After doping 1018, 1019 cm-3 Te in InSb, the temperature of Bridgman furnace was set up at $650^{\circ}C$. The samples were grown in I.D. 11mm, 100mm high quartz tube. The velocity of growth was about 2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/sec. In order to obtain the suppression of convection by magnetic field in the middle of growth, 2-4KG magnetic field was set on the melt. For searching of the shape of solid-liquid interface and the actual velocity of crystal growth, let 2A current flow from solid to liquid for 1second every 50seconds repeatedly (Peltier effect). The grown InSb was polycrystal, and each grain was very sharp. There was no much difference between the sample with and without magnetic field at a point of view of microstructure. For the sample with Peltier effect, the Peltier marks(striation) were observed regularly as expected. Through these marks, it was found that the solid-liquid interface was flat and the actual growth velocity was about 1-2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/sec. On the ground of theoretical calculation, there is thermosolutal convection in the Te doped InSb melt without magnetic field in this growth condition. and if there is more than 1KG magnetic field, the convection is suppressed. Through this experiments, the effective distribution coefficients, koff, were 0.35 in the case of no magnetic field, and 0.45 when the magnetic field is 2KG, 0.7 at 4KG. It was found that the more magnetic field was applied, the more convection was suppressed. But there was some difference between the theoretical calculation and the experiment, the cause of the difference was thought due to the use of some approximated values in theoretical calculation. In addition to these results, the sample with Peltier effect showed unexpected result about the Te distribution in InSb. It looked like no convection and no macrosegregation. It was thought that the unexpected behavior was due to Peltier mark. that is, when the strong current flew the growing sample, the mark was formed by catching Te. As a result of the phenomena, the more Te containing thin layer was made. The layer ruled the Hall measurement. The values of resistivity and mobility of these samples were just a little than those of other reference. It was thought that the reason of this result was that these samples were due to polycrystal, that is, grain boundaries had an influence on this result.

This paper deals with the anisotropy of the mushy region during solidification process of a binary mixture. A theoretical model which specifies a permeability tensor in terms of pricipal values is proposed. Also, the governing equations are modified into convenient forms for the numerical analysis with the existing algorithm. Some test computations are performed for soeidification of aqueous ammonium chloride solution contained in a square cavity. Results show that not only the present model is capable of resolving fundamental characteristics of the tranport phenomena, but also the anisotropy significantly affects the interdendritic flow structure, i.e., double-diffusive convection and macrosegregation patterns.

Few studies of large blooms over 700 mm thick among those used for the forging of raw materials have been reported. The cooling rate difference between the surface and the center of a large bloom is large, and the degradation of the mechanical properties is likely in cases involving excessively coarse precipitates resulted from the slow cooling rate of a large bloom after casting. Therefore, a schematic investigation of the growth behaviors of precipitates while varying their locations in blooms is necessary. The dissolution behaviors of precipitates were investigated by simulating a reheating process during which the bloom is heated to a high temperature. The segregation behavior of the as-cast large bloom was also investigated. Reheating specimens were obtained after an isothermal heat treatment at $1150^{\circ}C$ with various holding times to simulate the reheating process, with the samples undergoing a subsequent water quenching step. The precipitates were extracted using an electrolytic extractor and a particle size analysis was conducted with the aid of SEM, EDS, and TEM. In the present work, Al oxide, MnS and Nb carbide were mainly observed.
For Pb-20wt%Cu alloys, severe macrosegregation due to density difference of the resulting phases in normal directional solidification has been minimized and a uniformly aligned dendritic structure has been produced by axially rotating the sample of 5mm diameter in conjunction with horizontal directional solidification. Under the constant growth velocity of $20{\mu}m/sec$, increasing the rotation rate from 0.18 to 12rpm results in a transition from an aligned columnar to an equiaxed Cu-dendritic structure. With a constant rotation rate of 0.18rpm, increasing the growth velocity from 10 to $50{\mu}m/sec$ also has promoted a transition from columnar to equiaxed structure.
Solidification of aluminum alloys under moderate pressures has been investigated. Interfacial heat transfer coefficient at the casting/mold interface varies with time after pouring the molten metal into the die cavity, and therefore plays an important role in determining solidification sequence. The heat transfer coefficients were evaluated by using an inverse problem method, based on the measured temperature distribution. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were used for solidification simulation in the squeeze casting process. The effects of applied pressure and positions of insulation in the mold have also been investigated on solidification microstructures and on the formation of macrosegregation of Al-4.5wt.%Cu alloys.

During the past five years a very successful effort has been made to improve existing and develop new aluminium alloys. The progress achieved has been possible because of the development of new production methods, such as powder metallurgy and spray/deposition. These methods make use of rapid solidification process which alloys compositions other than those achieved by conventional ingot metallurgy. The ingot metallurgy of the 2000 and 7000 series used thus far, as well as the age hardening Al-Li alloys, show several disadvantages caused by the production process. Such problems are primarily coarse intermetallic constituent phases, coarse grains and macrosegregation, resulting in low fracture toughness. The present contribution reports results of an experimental investigation performed on a modern high strength spay deposited aluminium alloy of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu (7075 and the modified 7150X) type. Results are given in terms of its microstructural characterization by using X-ray diffractomertry and transmission electron microscopic. The mechanical propierties of those alloys in the as-extruded and extruded+aged condition were evaluated by using microhardness Vickers, tensile test and fracture toughness measurements.

This paper presents a similarity solution for the directional casting of binary peritectic alloys in the presence of shrinkage-induced flow. The present model retains essential ingredients of alloy solidification, such as temperature-solute coupling, macrosegregation, solid-liquid property differences, and finite back diffusion in the primary phase. An algorithm for simultaneously determining the peritectic and liquidus positions is newly developed, which proves to be more efficient and stable than the existing scheme. Sample calculations are performed for both hypo- and hyper-peritectic compositions. The results show that the present analysis is capable of properly resolving the solidification characteristics of peritectic alloys so that it can be used for validating numerical models as a test solution.

The demands of size and quality of large steel shaft forgings for ship building, power plant, steel plant, etc. are rapidly increasing, and some of these productions are manufactured from ingot weighing more than 300 tons. For use as rotating components. shafts require toughness, strength and homogeneity, and therefore are produced through a variety of heat treatments. According to the increase of ingot size, micro- and macrosegregation and also mass effect of the product increase. Thus, special care should be paid to the heat treatment of such large shaft forgings. In this paper, the heat treatment of large shaft forgings such as rotor and back-up roll is calculated using the commercial finite element code SYSWELD. Calculated distributions of temperature and phase are compared with experimental data. The continuous cooling transformation diagram, thermal and mechanical properites of each phase are used. The phase proportion, hardness and residual stress during water quenching are discussed.
In this paper, the flow lines as a function of product design as well as the forging process design are explored using typical application examples. The prediction of flow lines using metal forming simulation technology is introduced along with their characterization. Experimental studies have shown that the metal flow lines have a strong influence on the structural rigidity of the final product. In this study we present several typical applications. One example is the case of severely cut metal flow lines during machining, especially in the region where periodic contacting forces are applied. Another example is the case of abnormal distortion of flow lines which can cause too much elongation or hot shortness due to viscous heating in the region of distortion. A third example is the case of a macrosegregation region which needs to be controlled so it is not adjacent to the region where the force is applied in the use of the final component. An example of weight reduction for an automobile component with improved flow lines is also introduced. These typical applications can provide process engineers with the insight in designing automobile or mechanical components as well as in designing the manufacturing methods to produce various parts.

This paper deals with an extended analytical solution for the mixture solidification problem, in which temperature is inherently coupled with the solute transport due to the presence of volume contraction induced flow. A new exact solution to the energy equation accounting for the convection effect in the melt is successfully derived, which allows the present analysis to cover a high initial superheating. Difference in properties between the solid and liquid phases is rigorously incorporated into the model equations in the solid fraction weighted form. Taking advantage of linearized correction factors, a systematic and easy-to-implement algorithm for determining the solidus and liquidus positions is introduced, which proves not only to converge stably but also to be very efficient. For a specific case, the present results show excellent agreements with the existing solution. The effect of convection in the melt becomes appreciable with increasing the initial superheating. It is revealed that variable properties in the mushy region significantly affect the solidification behaviors. The present study is also capable of resolving the interaction between microsegregation and macrosegregation.
