  • The first zoeal stage of Macromedaeus orientalis (Takeda et Miyake, 1969) is described and illustrated. Its morphological characteristics are compared with those of other known species of the subfamily Xanthinae. The first zoeas of M. orientalis and M. distinguendus are similar, but they can be distinguished from each other by the characteristic of antenna. The former has a smooth antenna with a rounded tip, while the latter has a serrated antenna with a spinous tip.

  • Three crab species, Macromedaeus orientalis, Eriphia smithi, and Ocypode cordimana, from Jejudo Island are recorded for the first time in Korea. M. orientalis was collected under the rocks by SCUBA diving in 20m and at low tidal mark. However, E. smithi and O. cordimana were collected in crevices of the rock at low tidal mark and in a burrow of sand beach at supra tidal mark, respectively. At present, E. smithi is the only species of the genus represented in Korean waters. Including the new records in this study, the established brachyuran fauna in Korea now comprises 203 species.

  • The first zoea of Microcassiope orientalis is described and illustrated from laboratory hatched materials. Comparisons with previous studies of the first zoeal stages in the Xanthidae from Korean waters, revealed that some former studies were incorrected. The first zoea of M. orientalis described by Ko was identical to the first zoea of Macromedaeus distinguendus described by Terada. In addition, zoeal stages of Nanocassiope granullipes described by Ko & Clark was revealed the zoeal stages of M. cassiopes. So, the first zoea of M. orientalis is redescribed and illustrated in detailed with color photo herein, and compare its morphological characteristics with previous described zoea of N. granulipes by Ko & Clark.
