Energy Perspective of Sugar Industries in Pakistan: Determinants and Paradigm Shift

  • The aim of this study is to empirically explore micro and macroeconomic factors affecting the Pakistani sugar industries and searching the energy potential of this industry, through the survey of literature. The empirical part has been explored by employing Vector Autoregression (VAR), Granger Causality tests and simultaneous equation models through quarterly data for the period of 1991q2-2008q4. The study also aims to devise policies for the development of sugar industries and identify its growing importance for the energy sector of Pakistan. Empirical tests applied on the domestic prices of sugar, domestic interest rates, and exchange rate, productive capacities of sugar mills, per capita income, world sugar prices on cultivable area and sugar production reveal very useful results. Results reveal an improvement of productive capacity of the sugar mills of Pakistan on account of increasing crushing capacity of this sector. Negative effect of rising wholesale prices on the harvesting area was also observed. Profit earnings of the sugar mills significantly increase with the rise of sugar prices but the system does not exist for the farming community to share the rising prices of sugar. The models indicate positive and significant effect of local prices of sugar on its volume of import. Another of the findings of this study positively relates the local sugar markets with the international prices of sugar. Additionally, the causality tests results reveal exchange rate, harvesting area and overall output of sugarcane to have significant effects on the local prices of sugar. Similarly, import of sugar, interest rate, per capita consumption of sugar, per capita national income and the international prices of sugar also significantly affect currency exchange rate of Pakistani rupee in terms of US$. The study also finds sugar as an essential and basic necessity of the Pakistani consumers. That is why there are no significant income and price effects on the per capita consumption of sugar in Pakistan. All the empirical methods reiterate the relationship of variables. Economic policy makers are recommended to improve governance and management in the production, stock taking, internal and external trading and distribution of sugar in Pakistan using bumper crop policies. Macroeconomic variables such as interest rate, exchange rate per capita income and consumption are closely connected with the production and distribution of sugar in Pakistan. The cartelized role of the sugar industries should also be examined by further studies. There is need to further explore sugar sector of Pakistan with the perspective of energy generation through this sector; cartelized sugar markets in Pakistan and many more other dimensions of this sector. Exact appraisal of sugar industries for energy generation can be done appropriately by the experts from applied sciences.

A Study on Factors Determining the M&A and Greenfield of Korean Firms in China (한국기업의 대(對)중국 M&A 및 신설투자에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 비교 연구)

  • This study analyzes the impacts on the M&A and greenfield of macroeconomic variables of home and host countries, after identifying current status and characteristics of the M&A and greenfield related to the entering way of Korean firms in China. Main empirical results are summarize as follows. First, as for foreign exchange variable, the decreased value of Korea won shows the negative correlations with both of the greenfield and M&A. Second, the real interest rate of Korea to measure the cost of capital is not significant statistically. Third, while the host country's stock market index, Shanghai Comprehensive Index, shows the expected negative correlations with the investment in the case of small & medium firm and light industry, it shows the positive correlations which is not consistent with general expectation in the case of large firm and heavy industry. Fourth, the openness of host country shows the positive correlations with both of the greenfield and M&A. Finally, in regard to the M&A, China's GDP to measure the market size of host country is not significant statistically while it shows the strong positive relationship with the greenfield investment.

A Study on the Determinants of Apartment Price during COVID-19 Pandemic Using Dynamic Panel Model: Focusing on the Large-scale Apartment Complex of More than 3,000 Households in Seoul (동적패널모형을 활용한 코로나19 팬데믹 기간 아파트가격 결정요인 연구: 서울특별시 3000세대 이상 대규모 아파트 단지를 중심으로)

  • This study investigated price factors for large apartment complexes in Seoul during the COVID-19 pandemic and compared Gangnam and non-Gangnam areas, which have been recognized as heterogeneous markets. We find that the change in apartment prices in large-scale complexes did not significantly affect the individual characteristics of apartments, unlike previous studies, but was affected by macroeconomic variables such as interest rates and money. On the other hand, considering the units of the interest rate and total monetary volume variables, the effects of two variables on the apartment sales price is significantly high. In addition, the Gangnam area model analysis shows that apartment prices are greatly affected by interest rates and currency volume, and, the non-Gangnam area model analysis shows that apartment prices are greatly affected by interest rates and currency volume, but the degrees are different from the Gangnam area model. Overall, our study shows that interest rates and money supply were the main factors of apartment price changes, but apartment prices in non-Gangnam areas are more sensitive to changes in interest rates and money supply.

The Effects of Sectoral Composition on the Consumption Risk-Sharing via Capital Market for the US case (미국의 주별 산업구조가 소비위험 분산에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • We pursue empirically influential determinants of risk-sharing across various groups in the United States. We consider all the possible combinations out of the eight BEA economic regions and relate the risk-sharing measure for each group to sectoral composition difference under the control of the state-level macroeconomic and financial characteristics. Our results show that more active risk-sharing via cross-ownership market is observed in groups exhibiting more different sectoral composition. The evidence implies that, given other economic and financial conditions equal, economic union tends to share more consumption risk among its members that are more heterogeneous in their sectoral composition. These days, many countries aim to form FTA and other forms of economic integration. We suggest that they should pay attention to sectoral composition for member countries to minimizes income shock in the integrated economy.

  • Among several macroeconomic missteps blamed for the recent global financial crisis including the social problems of income distribution and the lack of proper financial remedies, two of them have received particular attention: the global BOP(Balance of Payment) imbalance and the misguided monetary policy. Such BOP imbalance was blamed for massive foreign exchange investment flows from Asia into the U.S., triggering the financial and real estate bubble in America. The latter refers to the excessively loose monetary policy of the U.S. Federal Reserve, which pushed financial institutions and households into reckless investment behavior in search of higher returns. Given the abuse of certain innovative financial techniques and new investment instruments that have been created in recent decades, both collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) and credit default swaps (CDS) enjoyed a symbiotic and toxic relationship prior to the financial crisis This paper is organized as follows: The first section analyzes the real causes of the recent financial crisis. The second details the role of CDOs and CDS. Then, to identify key determinants of the CDS spreads in an emerging capital market, the sample data of major Korean firms' CDS spreads are used to estimate the risk premium by utilizing the multiple regression analysis. The empirical test result indicates that Korean 3-year treasury bond rate(TYIELD), market to book value ratio(MV/BV), and assets size(INASSETS) are shown to demonstrate statistically significant influences on the changes of the CDS premium for sample firms.

The Effect of Housing Affordability on Housing Prices Variation in Korea (주택구입능력이 주택가격 변동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed the effects of macroeconomic variables, including housing affordability, and bank loan-related variables on variation in housing prices using multiple regression models. As a result of the analysis, consumer price growth rate, the total currency growth rate, and the housing affordability growth rate had a significant positive effect on changes in housing prices. As a result of analyzing the period of rising and falling housing prices, consumer price growth rate and the total currency growth rate during the period of rising housing prices had a significant positive effect on housing prices. Unlike the period of rising housing prices, the growth rate of household loans was found to have a significant positive effect on changes in housing prices. On the other hand, unlike the period of rising housing prices, the growth rater of mortgage loans was found to have a significant negative effect on changes in housing prices. The growth rate of housing affordability index did not have a significant positive effect on changes in housing prices during a falling housing prices. The determinants of housing prices showed different patterns during the period of rising housing prices and falling housing prices.

Estimation of the Korean Yield Curve via Bayesian Variable Selection (베이지안 변수선택을 이용한 한국 수익률곡선 추정)

  • A central bank infers market expectations of future yields based on yield curves. The central bank needs to precisely understand the changes in market expectations of future yields in order to have a more effective monetary policy. This need explains why a range of models have attempted to produce yield curves and market expectations that are as accurate as possible. Alongside the development of bond markets, the interconnectedness between them and macroeconomic factors has deepened, and this has rendered understanding of what macroeconomic variables affect yield curves even more important. However, the existence of various theories about determinants of yields inevitably means that previous studies have applied different macroeconomics variables when estimating yield curves. This indicates model uncertainties and naturally poses a question: Which model better estimates yield curves? Put differently, which variables should be applied to better estimate yield curves? This study employs the Dynamic Nelson-Siegel Model and takes the Bayesian approach to variable selection in order to ensure precision in estimating yield curves and market expectations of future yields. Bayesian variable selection may be an effective estimation method because it is expected to alleviate problems arising from a priori selection of the key variables comprising a model, and because it is a comprehensive approach that efficiently reflects model uncertainties in estimations. A comparison of Bayesian variable selection with the models of previous studies finds that the question of which macroeconomic variables are applied to a model has considerable impact on market expectations of future yields. This shows that model uncertainties exert great influence on the resultant estimates, and that it is reasonable to reflect model uncertainties in the estimation. Those implications are underscored by the superior forecasting performance of Bayesian variable selection models over those models used in previous studies. Therefore, the use of a Bayesian variable selection model is advisable in estimating yield curves and market expectations of yield curves with greater exactitude in consideration of the impact of model uncertainties on the estimation.

A Study on Determinants of Banks' Profitability: Focusing on the Comparison between before and after Global Financial Crisis (은행의 수익성에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구: 금융위기 전·후 비교를 중심으로)

  • This study is founded on banks' profitability factors. Unlike the previous study in terms of diversification of the banks' funding structure, this research performs multiple regression analysis during the entire period and examines the comparative analysis of before and after the financial crisis. the study establishes hypotheses by using the wholesale funding ratio as a key focus variable with 8 explanatory variables and the operating profit on assets as a profitability index. The Loan-deposit rate gap, the Number of stores and the Non-performing loan ratio prove to be a significant profitability factor for all periods of time. Korean banks are also more profitable when their the Loan-deposit rate gap get bigger and the Number of stores grows. The wholesale funding ratio is analyzed to have no statistically significant effect on the profitability of banks. Rather than being influenced by macroeconomic indicators, it is indicated that the situation of individual banks and other financial environments have been affected. And banks increase profitability as banks increase their loan after the financial crisis. The empirical analysis shows that profitability factors have periodical distinctions, and in this aspect, this research has implications. The study needs to be expanded to cover the entire domestic banking sector, in consideration of the profitability of the banking industry in the future.

An Analysis on Determinants that Affect the Sale Price of an Office Building in Seoul after Focusing on Strata Property Sales (서울 오피스 빌딩 매매가격 결정요인 분석 : 부분매매를 중심으로)

  • This paper has statistically analyzed the determining factors that affect office building sale prices by focusing on strata property sales through the hedonic price function. In this study, 1,171 office building transaction cases were analyzed in Seoul from 2000 to 2017. To determine the influence of various factors on office building sale prices, independent variables included factors that represented macroeconomic characteristics, locational characteristics, physical characteristics, and deal characteristics. The analysis of the strata property sales, which is a major concern in this study, showed that strata property sales enjoyed a discount of about 1.56 million won per pyeong out of the entire sales. In terms of the discount rate, strata property sales were at a 12.6% discount compared to entire property sales, so it was found that strata property sales significantly influenced office building selling price. This is due to the fact that the owner of the strata property encounters more difficulties in distributing cost than the sole proprietor in terms of property rights and the exercise of management rights. The results of this study are expected to contribute in securing transparency in transactions and risk management strategies in the future.
