  • Cryogenic machining uses liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a coolant. This machining process can reduce the cutting temperature and increase tool life. Titanium alloys have been widely used in the aerospace and automobile industries because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, they are difficult to machine because of their poor thermal properties, which reduce tool life. In this study, we applied cryogenic machining to titanium alloys. Orthogonal cutting experiments were performed at a low cutting speed (1.2 - 2.1 m/min) in three cooling conditions: dry, cryogenic, and cryogenic plus heat. Cutting force and friction coefficients were observed to evaluate the machining characteristics for each cooling condition. For the cryogenic condition, cutting force and friction coefficients increased, but decreased for the cryogenic plus heat condition.

  • Surface roughness is an important factor to evaluate machined parts in precision machining. This is the major measure of surface quality. This research sets up experiments to select the factors which affect surface roughness in the machining of inclined planes of aluminum. The levels of the selected experimental factors are chosen to evaluate the relationship between the surface roughness of the machined parts and machining parameters. This is to find out the optimal machining condition in the inclined planes. The objective of this research is to improve the surface roughness of the machined products by using the ANOVA analysis. The factors for the experiments are cutting speed, feed rate, cutting depth, and cutting width. The experimental levels of the factors are two for the cutting depth and width. For the cutting speed and feed rate, their levels are three because they are more sensitive for the surface roughness than the other two. The inclined planes are machined by 5-axis machining equipment.

  • Micro-EDM is widely used in machining of miro-parts such as micro-shafts and micro-holes. In order to select proper machining conditions and to reduce the machining time, it is necessary to understand machining characteristics under various machining conditions. Micro-hole machining tests were performed with round shape electrodes with different capacitances and voltages of the power source. The effects of the electrode rotational speed and diameter on the machining rate were also observed. From the experimental results, it was found that capacitance and voltage have significant effects on machining rate and the machined surface integrity. With higher capacitance and higher voltage, higher machining rate was observed together with poorer surface integrity. The electrode diameter was also found to have an effect on the machining rate and electrode wear.

  • Due to the recent growth of die/mold machining industry, demands for the high-precision and the high0quality of die product are increasing rapidly. Free surfaces of die/mold are often manufactured using the ball-end milling process. It is difficult to find the cutting condition of the ball-end milling process due to the free form machining for the various tool paths on inclined surface.

  • With the advance of processing technology , so as to spare fuel, piston heads used in automobile reciprocating engine have complex 3-dimension, with respect to shape such as ovality, profile, eccentricity, offset, recess. Therefore, coming out of the existing process work used master cam. the process work is performed using a CNC lathe. For a precision processing, the processing work is need to make study of high speed feed gear synchronized with the rotative speed of main spindle. And then the high speed feeding system must maintain high dynamic stiffness, high speed and high positioning accuracy . In this paper, in order to achieve high speed cutting tool feeding. The linear brushless DC motor is used for satisfying this process work. The ball bush and turicite is used as the guidance of the feed gear system. Also linear encoders, digital servo amplifiers and controller are used for controlling driving motor. This paper presents the design and simulation of the new tool feed system for noncircular machining.

  • High-speed movement and high-precision machining are the two most important requirements of present machine tool structures to reduce machining time and to increase the precision of products in various industrial fields such as semiconductor, automobile, and mold fabrication. The high speed operation of machine tools tue usually restricted not only by the low stiffness but also by the low damping of machine tool structures, which induces vibration during high speed machining. If the damping of machine tool structures is low, self induced or regenerative vibrations are bound to occur at high speed operation because the natural frequencies of machine tool structures can not be increased indefinitely. Therefore, the high damping capacity of a machine tool structure is an important factor for high speed machine tool structures. Polymer concrete has high potential for machine tool bed due to its good damping characteristics. In this study, a polymer concrete bed combined with welded steel structure i.e., a hybrid structure was desisted and manufactured for a high-speed gantry-type milling machine through static and dynamic analyses using finite element method. Then the dynamic characteristics were tested experimentally.

  • The form accuracy of parts has become an important parameter. Therefore, dimensional tolerance and geometric tolerance are used in the design stage to satisfy required quality and functions of parts. But the informations on the machining conditions, which can satisfy the assigned geometric tolerance in design, are insufficient. The objectives of this research are to study the effects of the grinding parameters such as traverse speed, work speed, depth of cut, and dwell time on the after-ground workpiece shape, and to find out the major parameters among them. The results are as follows, The effects of work speed and depth of cut on workpiece shape are negligible compared with the effect of traverse speed. There is an optimal dwell time depending on the traverse speed. The optimal dwell time is decreasing as the traverse speed is increased.

  • The advanced technology of micro-machining is starting to penetrate our lives. This technology, with which it is possible to make micro-structures by means of processing on the order of nm (micrometer = 1/1,000 mm) or less, is realizing machines that were only part of our wildest imagination. However, the fact is that many issues remain in the quest for a variety of applications. With the advent of computing technologies, information technologies, and telecommunications technologies, we foresee the need for new approaches in design, process, and the use of materials, technologies, and people in a globalized manufacturing enterprise. A new thinking paradigm is needed to focus on quality of service on the products we design and manufacture. Factories in different regions need to be co-ordinated through use of the state-of-the-art information on productivity, diagnostics, and service evaluation of manufacturing systems could be shared among different locations and partners. In this research, We develope the internet based Diagnosis system for micro machining and evaluate its characteristics by using mechatronic sensor like Dynamometer, acoustic emission, Acceleration sensor, micro phone, vision, infra-red thermometer.

  • In this paper, ablation rate of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics by femtosecond laser fluence is derived with experimental method. The automatic three axis linear stage makes laser optics to move with high spatial resolution. With 10 times objective lens, minimal pattern width of $Al_2O_3$ is measured in the focal plane. Ablated surface area is shown as linear tendency increasing number of machining times with various laser power conditions. Machining times is most sensitive condition to control $Al_2O_3$ pattern width. Also, the linear increment of pattern width with laser power change is investigated. In high machining speed, the ablation volume rate is more linear with fluence because pulse overlap is minimized in this condition. Thermal effect to surrounding medium can be minimized and clean laser process without melting zone is possible in high machining speed. Ablation volume rate decelerates as increasing machining times and multiple machining times should be considered to achieve proper ablation width and depth.
