  • The error motion of a machine tool spindle directly affects the surface errors of machined parts. The error motions of the spindle are not desired errors in the three linear direction motions and two rotating motions. Those are usually due to the imperfect of bearings, stiffness of spindle, assembly errors, external force or unbalance of rotors. The error motions of the spindle have been needed to be decreased to desired goal of spindle's performance. The level of error motion is needed to be estimated during the design and assembly process of the spindle. In this paper, the estimation method for the five degree of freedom (5 D.O.F) error motions of the spindle is suggested. To estimate the error motions of the spindle, waviness of shaft and bearings, external force model was used as input data. And, the estimation models are considering geometric relationship and force equilibrium of the five degree of the freedom. To calculate error motions of the spindle, not only imperfection of the shaft, bearings, such as rolling element bearing, hydrostatic bearing, and aerostatic bearing, but also driving elements such as worm, pulley, and direct driving motor systems, were considered.

  • The machining accuracy is affected by geometric, volumetric errors of the machine tools. To improve the product quality, we need to enhance the machining accuracy of the machine tools. To this point of view, measurement and inspection of finished part as error analysis of machine tools ahas been studied for last several decades. This paper suggests the enhancement method of machining accuracy for precision machining of high quality metal reflection mirror or optics lens, etc. In this paper, we study 1) the compensation of linear pitch error with NC controller compensation function using laser interferometer measurement, 2) the method for enhancing the accuracy of NC milling machining by modeling and compensation of volumetric error, 3) the spherical surface manufacturing by modeling and compensation of volumetric error of the machine tool, 4) the system development of OMM without detaching work piece from a bed of machine tool after working, 5) the generation of the finished part profile by OMM. Furthermore, the output of OMM is compared with that of CMM, and verified the feasibility of the measurement system.

  • The properties of a machine tool greatly affect machining quality since a machine tool has large variance in its features. Machine tool makers want to find best machining condition with the one that they have built. Machine builders need to develop test specimen since it helps finding characteristics of machine tools when the machining properties of the specimen are analyzed. This paper develops test specimen to identify features of the main spindle, the feeding device, and the frame of a machine tool. The specimen is machined with a high speed machine and the features of the machine are analyzed with test items. They are surface roughness, overshoot in axial movement, errors in circular movement, feeding with small movement and compensational error. This work can improve usability for a machine tool in machining practice.

  • Accurate acquisition of surface geometries such as machined surfaces, biological surfaces, and deformed parts have been very important technique in scientific study and engineering, expecially for system design, manufacturing and inspection. Two camera method is relatively simple with an acceptable accuracy. In this paper, a new method is studied to acquire 3D geometric data of the small object such as a die in stone model. When the devices, cameras, laser beam and object are in a perfect plane, the calculation becomes very simple with less error. But this paper shows that arbitrarily positioned system can also be used to obtain 3D data.

  • In this paper, a new technique and theory are proposed which correct the orientation (inclination of a vertical axis) of a cylinder in vertical-micro positioning device. An algorithm for determining the orientation of the cylinder with a pair of displacement sensor units is derived and two types of the correction methods are described. To assess the performance and efficiency of the developed correction technique, the compensation errors originated from the correction algorithm and the machined characteristics of cylinder surface are evaluated from the geometrical considerations and the statistical techniques. Based upon the evaluation results, the maximum compensation error is estimated for the orientation of cylinder and the optimum correction technique is derived.

  • In order to achieve and maintain dimensional accuracy in laser micro-machining, dominant parameters such as laser power and laser focus position need to be monitored and controlled real time. Also, in order to selectively machine multi-layered materials, the material being presently machined need to be recognized. This paper presents an auto-focusing (AF) module to keep laser focus on a large-area surface; a real-time laser power stabilizing module based on optical attenuation; and a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) module. With these monitoring modules, position error in laser focus on a 4" silicon wafer was kept below $4{\mu}m$, initially $51{\mu}m$, and laser power stability of a UV laser source was improved from 1.6% to 0.3%. Also, the material transition from polyimide to copper in machining of FCCL (flexible copper clad laminate) was successfully observed.

  • The demand for wire-cut EDM is increasing rapidly in the die and tool making industry. In this study machining characteristics such as machining rate, surface roughness, hand drum form and hardness of machined material are investigated experimentally under the conditions varing pulse on time, pulse off time, peak voltage, wire tension after fixing other conditions in SKD 11 and brass and brass workpiece. It was found that various operating conditions had significant influences on machining characteristics. But the hardness of workpiece was uneffected by operating conditions. Also it was obtained experimentally that brass workpeice had better machinability than SKD 11 one.dition according to the current(Ip) in an electric spark machine : 1) Electrode is utilized Cu and Graphite. 2) Work piece is used the material of carbon steel. The condition of experiment is : 1) Current is varied 0.7(A) to 50(A) and the time of electric discharging to work piece in each time is 30(min) to 60(min). 2) After the upper side of work piece was measured in radius(5$\mu$m) of stylus analyzed the surface roughness to ade the table and graph of Rmax by yielding data. 3) Electro wear ratio is : \circled1Cooper was measured ex-machining and post-machining by the electronic balance. \circled2The ex-machining of graphite measured by it, the post-machining was found the data from volume $\times$specific gravity and analyzed to made its table and graph on ground the data. 4) In order to keep the accuracy of voltage affected to the work piece was equipped with the A.V. R and the memory scope was sticked to the electric spark machine. 5) In order to preserve the precision of current, to get rid of the noise occured by internal resistance of electric spark machine and to force injecting for the discharge fluid , it made the fixed table for a work piece to minimize the work error by means of one's failure during the electric discharging.

  • Contact-type Linear Encoder-like Capacitive Displacement Sensor (CLECDiS) is a novel displacement sensor which has wide measurable range with high resolution. The sensor, however, is very sensitive to relative rotational alignment between stator and mover of the sensor as well as its displacement. In addition to, there can be some disturbances in the relative rotational alignment, so some noises occur in the sensor's output signal by the disturbances. This negative effect of the high sensitivity may become larger as increasing sensitivity. Therefore, this negative effect of the high sensitivity has to be compensated and reduced to achieve nanometer resolution of the sensor. In this study, a new type capacitive linear encoder with a mechanical guide is presented to reduce the relative rotational alignment problem. The presented method is not only to reduce the alignment problem, but also to assemble the sensor to the stage conveniently. The method is based on a new type CLECDiS that has mechanical guide autonomously. In the presented sensor, when the device is fabricated by micro-machining, the guide-rail is also fabricated on the surface of the sensor. By the direct fabrication of the guide-rail with high precision micro-machining, errors of the guide-rail can be reduced significantly. In addition, a manual yaw alignment is not required to obtain large magnitude of the output signal after the assembly of the sensor and the stage. The sensor movement is going to follow the guide-rail automatically. The prototype sensor was fabricated using the presented method, and we verify the feasibility experimentally.
