  • The root-mat formation of infant rice seedlings (8- to 10-day-old) is sometime not enough for machine transplanting because of the too-short nursery period. This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of metalaxyl seed-soaking treatment in the mixed solution of metalaxyl, seed disinfectant and insectcides on the root-mat formation of infant rice seedling in machine transplanting. The rice seeds of Odaebyeo were soaked in the mixed solution of metalaxyl, prochloraz and insectcides. with the recommended concentrations for 24 hours at room temperature. Seeding rate was 220g per seed tray (30 x 60 x 3cm). Metalaxyl (25% wettable powder), a fungicide. was used in 1. 000 times dilution as a promoting substance on the root-mat formation. Generally, the metalaxyl-treated seeds markedly increased the root number and length, and rooting activity of infant rice seedlings as compared with the control, thus the root-mat formation was excellent. When the rice seeds were sterilized by the mixed solution of prochloraz and insectcides, metalaxyl could be used together for increasing root-mat rormation of infant rice seedlIngs due to no interaction among agro-chemicals used. Seedling damping-off and physiological seedling rot were also controled in the seedlings of metalaxy-treated seeds. The root-mat of metalxyl-treated seeds had higher hardness and tension than control in terms of physical properties.

  • This experiment was conducted to identify the growth and yield differences in rice cultural types: Broadcasting on flooded paddy surface(BF), drilling on flooded paddy surface(DF), puddled-soil drill seeding(PD), drill seeding on dried paddy flat(DD), and machine transplanting of lO-day old seedling(MT) at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station in 1995. Among the cultural types of direct seeding, the number of seedling stand showed high in order of DD>BF>DF>PD. Tillering at early growth stage was faster in MT and effective tiller showed higher in MT than in direct seeding. Growth duration from seeding to heading was longer in direct seeding than in MT for 2-13 days of Dongjinbyeo and 10-18 days of Nonganbyeo. Root distribution ratio at the surface soil revealed high in order of BF>DF>PD>DD and MT. Culm wall thickness of 4th internode was thicker in machine transplanting of 10-day old seedling than in direct seeding, and the depth of buried culm showed deep by turns of MT> DD>PD>DF and BF. The height of center gravity and moment related to lodging revealed higher in direct seeding than machine transplanting that resulted high lodging index by turns of BF>DF>DD> PD among the direct seeding cultural type. Lodging was occured seriously in the order of BF>DF>PD>DD =MT in Dongjinbyeo but wasn't significantly different in Nonganbyeo among the cultural type. The yield components and grain yield showed varietal differences but was not significantly different between in MT and in direct seeding, and among cultural types of direct seeding.

  • To establish an efficient light control method using three covering materials on tunnel shaped rice seed-bed at greening stage after seedling emergence, four rice cultivars, Nampungbyeo, Taebaegbyeo, Seonambyeo, and Seomjinbyeo were sown on 15 April and 10 May in 1983 and 1984 respectively. After seedling emergence by a simplified emerging methods the seedling boxes were moved onto tunnel shaped seed-bed which was covered with combined matrials of PE film, silverpoly sheet, and spunbonded polyester fabric. For machine transplanting of rice seedlings in cases of early season and optimum season seeding in central part of Korea, PE film tunnel with silverpoly mulched, and PE film tunnel methods with spunbonded polyester fabric mulched reduced injuries of non-parasitic seedling damping-off and a albinism as affected by it, protected rice seedlings from injuries by extremely low temperature in the night, and reduced less differences in diurnal temperature than those in the other covering methods. At late season seeding for double cropping system of paddy field in southern part of Korea, a single silver-poly or a single spunbonded polyester fabric-covered tunnel method showed good green seedlings, and prevent-ed extreme rising of diurnal temperature by light interception in the tunnel.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the minimum days for raising infant rice seedling with different temperature (day/night $^{\circ}C$ : 20/12, 25/18, 30/20) and to compare with seedling growth and rooting ability at 10 days after transplanting with endosperm-intacted and removed seedlings. The minimum days for raising infant rice seedling was shown differently with different temperatures, thus there were turned out by mat formation to be 10 days at 20/12$^{\circ}C$ (day/night), 8 days at 25/18$^{\circ}C$ and 6 days at 30/20$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Seedling height, leaf number and dry weight of top part at the minimum days for raising infant rice seedling were 8-12cm, 1.5-1.7 leaves and 6.9-7. 5cm per seedling, respectively. The seedling growth at 10 days after transplanting was better at high temperatures (25/18$^{\circ}C$) than low temperature (20/12$^{\circ}C$) at transplanting, and the growth of infant rice seedling with endosperm -intacted was better than that with endosperm-removed. This tedency was shown significantly in transplanting at 20/12$^{\circ}C$ (day/night) of 4 days seedling.

  • Differences in community space of weed and rice were investigated among five types of rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. The five types employed were three transplanting cultivations such as conventional hand transplanting, machine transplanting with 30-day-old seedling, and machine transplanting with 10-day-old seedling and two direct-seedlings such as flood direct-seeded rice by pregerminated seed and dry direct-seeded rice by dry seed. The greatest competition between rice and weeds as determined by growth rate of rice was found in between 10 and 11 weeks after transplanting (WAT) and/or seeding, irrespective of cultivation types. Competition injury due to weeds was greater in transplanting with 10-day-old seedling than with 30-day-old seedling. The greatest injury in growth of rice was found in direct-seeded cultivation. In transplanting cultivations space occupation by rice in lower than 80 cm height level was low as compared with that by weeds. Plant heights of dominant weeds such as E. crus-galli and E. kuroguwai were shorter by heading date, but taller after the heading date than those of rice. In direct-seeding community space was mainly occupied by the weeds. The pattern of community structure and competition injury caused by weeds showed a similar tendency obtained on the basis of species distribution, number, and dry weight of the occurred weeds.
