Mac-2BP is a ligand of the galectin family that has been suggested to affect tumor proliferation and metastasis formation. We assessed Mac-2BP expression at the transcriptional and translational levels to evaluate nerve growth factor (NGF)-induced Mac-2BP expression. A time kinetic analysis using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction showed that NGF-induced Mac-2BP transcript levels were 4-5 times higher than in controls. Mac-2BP enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immuno-fluorescence staining showed a 2-3-fold increase in intracellular and secreted Mac-2BP as a result of NGF stimulation. This increase was regulated by Akt activation and NF-${\kappa}B$ binding. p65 and p50-NF-${\kappa}B$ are major transcriptional factors in the Mac-2BP promoter region, and were shown to be regulated in accordance with the Akt activation states. Collectively, these results suggest that NGF induces Mac-2BP expression via the PI3K/Akt/NF-${\kappa}B$ pathway.

The purpose of this present study is to measure the changes of regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) and blood pressure(BP) in rats. following the intravenous injection of drug. The measurement was continually monitored by laser-doppler flowmeter (Transonic Instrument, USA) and pressure tranducer(Grass, USA) in anesthetized adult Sprague-Dawley rats about for 2h to 2h and a half through the data acquisition system composed of MacLab and Macintosh computer. The result of this experiment was as following. 1. Fructus Schizandrae increased the changes of rCBF in rats, significantly. 2. The rCBF of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated propranolol. 3. The rCBF of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated atropine. 4. The rCBF of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated I-NNA. 5. The rCBF of Fructus Schizandrae was decreased by pretreated methylene blue. 6. The rCBF of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated indomethacin. 7. Fructus Schizandrae decreased the changes of blood pressure significantly. 8. The BP of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated propranolol. 9. The BP of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated atropine. 10. The BP of Fructus Schizandrae did nol change by pretreated I-NNA. 11. The BP of Fructus Schizandrae was decreased by pretreated methylene blue. 12. The BP of Fructus Schizandrae did not change by pretreated indomethacin. These results indicate that Fructus Schizandrae can increase the rCBF and decrease the BP, that related to guanylyl cyclase activity.

An epizootic of calf diarrhea occurred in a Korean native cattle farm located in Chonbuk province. The calves that had either bloody or watery diarrhea were 1 to 30 days old. Some of these animals died during the acute course of the disease. Five calves with predominant clinical signs were examined in more detail. Hematological and serum chemical findings were suggestive of dehydration and nutritional insufficiency. Fecal material from the calve was cultured on/in brilliant green agar (BGA), xylose-lysine deoxycholate (XLD) medium, MacConkey agar, eosin methylene blue (EMB) agar and triple sugar iorn (TSI) A bacteria was isolated. which was subsequently identificed as belonging to Salmonella spp. To differentiate Salmoenlla serotype, rfbs gene of S. dublin was amli- find (720 bp) by multiplex (PCR). The rfbS gene sequences of S, dublin ficld isolate(SDC-1) was com- pared with that off S. dublin(S-37) S, dublin(Ahn et al, 1996), S enteritidis(Ahn et al 1996)and S. typhi (Generbak accession No M29682). The identities of nucleotide sequences were 100%. 99.6%, 99.6%, 97.5% respectively.
This study was performed to provide basic data for predicting the usefulness of Gastrodiae rhizoma as a materials for functional foods. Changes in regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF) and blood pressure(BP) were measured in rats, following the intravenous injection of processed Gastrodiae rhizoma water extract. In its processing, we used rice water, Sderotium Poriae Cocos and Radix Ligustici Chuanxiaong. The rCBF and BP measurements were continually monitored by a laser-doppler flowmeter and a pressure transducer in the anesthetized adult Sprague-Dawley rats for approximately about two to two and a half hours, through a data acquisition system composed of a MacLab and Macintosh computer. The results of the experiment are as follows: the processed Gastrodiae rhizoma significantly increased changes in rCBF in the rats. The rCBF with processed Gastrodiae rhizoma did not change by pretreatment with propranolol, atropin, methylene blue, and indomethacin. But the rCBF of the processed Gastrodiae rhizoma was increased by pretreatment with L-NNA. The processed Gastrodiae rhizoma significantly decreased the changes in BP. However, BP with the processed Gastrodiae rhizoma did not change by pretreatment with propranolol, atropin, methylene blue and indomethacin. On the other hand, BP decreased with the processed Gastrodiae rhizoma pretreatment with L-NNA. These results indicate that processed Gastrodiae rhizoma might increase the rCBF and the BP which are related to nitric oxide synthesis. Also these results indicate that the used of processed Gastrodiae rhizoma in safe, as well as clinically applicable in diet therapy for cerebral related disease and hypertension.
In 2012, a pink mold rot was observed on unishiu orange (Citrus unshiu Mac.) fruits at the Wholesale Market for Agricultural Products, Jinju, Korea. The symptom on unishiu orange was a water-soaked lesion on the surface of fruit, which later on enlarged to form softened brown rot lesions. The diseased fruits were covered with pink-colored mold, consisting of conidia and conidiophores of the pathogen. Optimum temperature for mycelial growth was $25^{\circ}C$. Conidia were hyaline, smooth, 2-celled, and thick-walled conidia with truncate bases, ellipsoidal to pyriform, characteristically held together zig-zag chains and $12-26{\times}8-12{\mu}m$ in size. Conidiophore was erect, colorless, unbranched, and 4-5 ${\mu}m$ wide. On the basis of mycological characteristics, pathogenicity test, and molecular analysis with complete ITS rDNA region, the causal fungus was identified as Trichothecium roseum (Pers.) Link ex Gray. This is the first report of pink mold rot caused by T. roseum on unishiu orange in Korea.
A single specimen belonging to the family Carangidae was first collected by angling in Seogwi-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do on 16 October 2023. This individual was identified as Caranx papuensis Alleyne & MacLeay based on morphological traits as following: lateral line gently curving below the first dorsal fin, presence of scaleless area on the thorax, and gill rakers 26. A total of 619 base pairs sequences of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I region was analyzed, and we found it closely matched to the Japanese C. papuensis (K2P distance=0.54%). We propose its new Korean name "Hwang-jul-jeon-gang-i" based on a yellow band along the lateral line.
Clonidine, a centrally-acting antihypertensive agent known to reduce central sympathetic outflow and modulate presynaptic transmitter's release, has shown to suppress central noradrenergic hyperactivity induced by immobilization stress in animals, by decreasing the MAC of halothane and the dose of narcotics required to prevent reflex cardiovascular response to noxious stimuli, and to have potent analgesic properties in humans. These characteristics suggest that clonidine might be a useful adjunct to the anesthetic management of patients with preexisting hypertension. Accordingly, we determined the clinical efficacy and safety on analgesia, sedation and hemodynamic stability in the perioperative period. Thirty patients(ASA physical status II-III) with a history of arterial hypertension, scheduled for elective orthopedic surgery were randomly assigned to two groups. We applied CPA-clonidine patch($6.9\;mg/cm^2$, 0.2 mg delivered daily) or placebo patch to each groups, 48 hours prior to induction of anesthesia. Antihypertensive medication was continued until the morning of the scheduled surgery. All patients received premedication of atropine and lorazepam, and induced anesthesia with thiopental and succinylcholine, and maintained with enflurane and 50% nitrous oxide, while sustaining the BP and pulse rate at acceptable range. For the relief of pain postoperatively, diclofenac and fentanyl were administered intramuscularly on demand. The results were as follows: 1) The change of hemodynamic responses in clonidine group was less compared to the placebo group. 2) Intraoperative anesthetic requirement for enflurane in clonidine group were significantly lower than placebo group. 3) Postoperative analgetic requirement in clonidine group were significantly lower than placebo group. In clonidine group, 5 cases out of 15 cases were required no analgetics, and the incidence of administration of additional fentanyl was decreased to 5 cases, comparing with 10 cases in placebo group.
