Recently there are many pilot studies for advanced application of first Korea national high resolution satellite image, which is called as KOMPSAT-MSC (Korean Multi-purpose Satellite-Multi-Spectral Camera), in Korea. In this study the forest type classification methodology is developed and its distribution map was constructed by applying high resolution satellite image, KOMPSAT-MSC, based on Tasseled Cap Transformation, especially through comparing the result of detailed filed surveying such as forest type, tree species, tree diameter, tree age and tree crown density in pilot study area.
MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) system is an electro-optical camera system which is being developed to be installed on KOMPSAT-2 satellite. High resolution image data from MSC system will be transmitted to the ground-station through x-band antenna called APS (Antenna Pointing System). APS is a directional antenna which will point to the receiving antenna at ground station while the satellite is passing over it. The APS needs to be controlled accurately to provide the reliable communication with big RF link margin. The APS is controlled by ATS (Antenna Tracking Software) which is included in the MSC software. ATS uses the closed loop control algorithm which will use TPF (Tracking Parameter File) as an input for antenna position, and will use two resolve readings from APS as a feedback. ATS has been developed and verified using APS QM (Qualification Model) and all the control parameters for ATS have been tested and verified. Various kinds of maximum, nominal and realistic dynamics for the APS movement have been simulated and verified. In this paper, closed loop servo control algorithm and obtained APS position error from the verification test with APS QM will be presented in detail

In order to evaluate KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) application products and develop the multi-sensor data application technologies, the Product Validation Site (PVS) will be designed and constructed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). Also KARl has a plan for acquisition of multi-sensor data such as ENVISAT ASAR and Project for On Board Autonomy (PROBA) Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) data through international cooperation with European Space Agency (ESA). These data will be utilized with KOMPSAT-2 Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC) data. KARI and ESA have identified a mutual interest in creating synergy in the joint exploitation of Earth Observation data for science and applications both in Korea and Europe. This paper summarizes the status of joint experimental studies between KARI and ESA for further applications and presents some expected results from related activities.

The PMU (Payload Management Unit) is the main subsystem for the management, control and power supply of the MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) Payload operation. It is the most important function for the electro-optical camera system that performs the Non-Uniformity Correction (NUC) function of the raw imagery data, rearranges the data from the CCD (Charge Coupled Device) detector and output it to the Data Compression and Storage Unit (DCSU). The NUC board in PMU performs it. In this paper, the NUC board system is described in terms of the configuration and the function, the efficiency for non-uniformity correction, and the influence of the data compression upon the peculiar feature of the CCD pixel. The NUC board is an image-processing unit within the PMU that receives video data from the CEV (Camera Electronic Unit) boards via a hotlinkand performs non-uniformity corrections upon the pixels according to commands received from the SBC (Single Board Computer) in the PMU. The lossy compression in DCSU needs the NUC in on-orbit condition.

The KOMPSAT-2 MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera), with high spatial resolution, is currently under development and will be launched in the end of 2004. A sensor model relates a 3-D ground position to the corresponding 2-D image position and describes the imaging geometry that is necessary to reconstruct the physical imaging process. The Rational Function Model (RFM) has been considered as a generic sensor model. form. The RFM is technically applicable to all types of sensors such as frame, pushbroom, whiskbroom and SAR etc. With the increasing availability of the new generation imaging sensors, accurate and fast rectification of digital imagery using a generic sensor model becomes of great interest to the user community. This paper describes the procedure to generation of the RPC (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) for KOMPSAT-2 MSC.

As a main management unit of MSC, PMU controls the MSC payload operation by issuing commands to other subunit and PMU internal modules. One of these main control functions is to drive the APS(Antenna Pointing System) when APS motion is required. For this purpose, SBC(Single Board Computer) for calculating motor commands and APDE for driving APM(Antenna Pointing Mechanism) by PWM signal operate inside PUM. In this paper, details on APDE design shall be described such as electronic board architecture, primary and redundant design concept, Cross-Strap, FPGA contents and latch-up immune concept, etc., which shall show good practices of electronic board design for space program.

The FGI is an integral component of the MSC test equipment and is situated in a slot along the ISA bus of the test equipment PC. The main function of the FGI is an interface between the MSC image data via hotlink interface and Frame Grabber. The FGI has two independent receiving channels that allow the board to receive image data arriving. The FGI also includes two transmission channels with hotlink transmitters. Additionally, the FGI is capable of generating digital video test patterns to test the NUC.
SBC(Single Board Computer) is being developed for MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) on KOMPSAT-2(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite). SBC controls all the units of MSC system and gets commands and sends telemetry to and from spacecraft bus via 1553 communication channel. Due to the fact that SBC does very important roles for MSC system operation and SBC operates with 100% duty cycle, SBC is designed to have high reliability. SBC which has Intel 80486 as a main processor includes eight serial communication channels, one mil-std-1553 interface channel and several discrete interfaces. SBC incorporates 2Mbyte radiation hardened SRAM(Static Random Access Memory) and 1Mbyte flash memory. There are also PIC(Programmable Interrupt Controller), counter, WDT(Watch Dog Timer) in the SBC. In this paper, the design result of the SBC is presented.
Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite was developed and launched as a main payload to provide 1m of GSD(Ground Sampling Distance) for one(1) channel panchromatic imaging and 4m of GSD for four(4) channel multi-spectral imaging at 685km altitude covering l5km of swath width. Since the compression on MSC image chain was required to overcome the mismatch between input data rate and output date rate JPEG-like method was selected and analyzed to check the influence on the performance. In normal operation the MSC data is being acquired and transmitted with lossy compression ratio to cover whole image channel and full swath width in real-time. In the other hand the MSC performance have carefully been handled to avoid or minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP(Launch and Early Operation Phase). While KOMPSAT-2 had been developed, new compression method based upon wavelet for space application was introduced and available for next satellite. The study on improvement of image chain including new compression method is asked for next KOMPSAT which requires better GSD and larger swath width In this paper, satellite image chain which consists of on-board image chain and on-ground image chain including general MSC description is briefly described. The performance influences on the image chain between two on-board compression methods which are or will be used for KOMPSAT are analyzed. The differences on performance between two methods are compared and the better solution for the performance improvement of image chain on KOMPSAT is suggested.

In the satellite camera, the incoming light source is converted to electronic analog signals by the electronic component for example CCD (Charge Coupled Device) detectors. The analog signals are amplified, biased and converted into digital signals (pixel data stream) in the video processor (A/Ds). The outputs of the A/Ds are digitally multiplexed and driven out using differential line drivers (two pairs of wires) for cross strap requirement. The MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) in the KOMPSAT-2 which is a LEO spacecraft will be used to generate observation imagery data in two main channels. The MSC is to obtain data for high-resolution images by converting incoming light from the earth into digital stream of pixel data. The video data outputs are then MUXd, converted to 8 bit bytes, serialized and transmitted to the NUC (Non-Uniformity Correction) module by the Hotlink data transmitter. In this paper, the video data streams, the video data format, and the image data processing routine for satellite camera are described in terms of satellite camera control hardware. The advanced satellite with very high resolution requires faster and more complex image data chain than this algorithm. So, the effective change of the used image data chain and the fast video data transmission method are discussed in this paper
