A Safety Survey of Pesticide Residues on Agricultural Products Marketed in Incheon from 2019 to 2021 (인천광역시 유통 농산물의 잔류농약 안전성 조사)

  • This study investigated pesticide residues in 7,069 agricultural products distributed in the city of Incheon from 2019 to 2021. Ingestion of pesticides can cause serious carcinogenic, endocrine, neurological, and reproductive problems. Pesticide residues in the samples were analyzed using various multi-residue methods (GC-MS/MS, GC-ECD/NPD, LC-MS/MS, and HPLC-UVD) on the Korean Food Code. The violation rate of the samples exceeding the maximum residue level (MRL) of pesticide residues for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021 was 1.0%, 1.4%, and 1.1%, respectively. Diazinon, flubendiamide, procymidone, fluxametamide, and fluquinconazole were the most frequently reported violative pesticide residues. Most commonly encountered agricultural products exceeding MRLs were coriander leaves, chamnamul, chwinamul, welsh onion, and crown daisy. Agricultural products and pesticides frequently exceeding MRLs should be continuously inspected for food safety. Continuous monitoring of pesticide residues in agricultural products is indispensable to improve consumer safety by preventing the distribution of agricultural products exceeding MRLs.

Monitoring of Pesticide Residues in Commercial Environment-friendly Stalk and Stem Vegetables and Leafy Vegetables and Risk Assessment (유통 친환경 엽채류와 엽경채류 중 잔류농약 실태조사 및 안전성 평가)

  • In order to monitor the levels of pesticides in environment-friendly stalk and stem vegetables and leafy vegetables selling at markets in Korea. A total of 637 (395 organic agricultural products, 242 pesticide-free agricultural products) samples of 21 stalk and stem vegetables and leafy vegetables were collected twice from markets in July and August 2010 in Korea. Pesticide residues in samples were analyzed by multiresidue method for 240 pesticides using GC-ECD/NPD and HPLC-DAD/FLD. The suspected-pesticides were confirmed with a GC-MSD. As a result of analysis, six pesticides were detected from eight samples, representing a detection rate of 1.3% and amounts of pesticide residues in samples were as follows: alachlor 0.043, chlorfenapyr 0.022-0.324, diazinon 0.024, dicofol 0.009-0.138, dithiopyr 0.008, metolachlor 0.025 mg/kg. Their residue levels were below the MRLs. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the pesticides detected from stalk and stem vegetables and leafy vegetables were less than 25% of their acceptable daily intakes (ADIs), representing that residue levels of the pesticides detected were evaluated as safe for consumption. However, five samples containing pesticide residues were unsuitable environment-friendly products because of pesticides detected more than their 10% MRLs in organic and pesticide-free agricultural products.

Survey of Multi Residual Pesticides in Materials of Korean Traditional Herbal Tea (한방차 원료의 잔류농약 조사연구)

  • We analysed 149 samples of Korean traditional herbal tea materials. The 156 pesticides were analyzed by GC/ECD and NPD, detected pesticides were confirmed by GC-TOF/MS. Sample preparation was performed bv multi-residue analysis method of multiclass pesticides of the Korea Food Code. The residual pesticides were detected in 22 samples(14.8%), the highest detection frequency samples are lycium and jujube. Detected pesticides in Korean traditional herbal tea materials were chlorpyrifos (5 samples), chlorothalonil (3 samples), cypermethrin (3 samples), hexaconazol (3 samples) and cyhalothrin(3 samples). The pesticide types detected in Korean traditional herbal tea materials were organophosphorus(29.2%), pyrethroids(16.7%), organochlorines (12.5%) and triazoles(12.5%). The 5 samples(lycium, jujube, chrysanthemum, balloon-flower, milk vetch root) were detected pesticides below MRLs, 2 samples(cornus fruit, cnidium) were detected pesticides unnotificated MRLs.

Reduction Rate of Azoxystrobin, Fenhexamid and Cyprodinil during Ginseng Processing (홍삼 가공중 azoxystrobin, fenhexamid 및 cyprodinil농약의 감소율)

  • This study was performed to acquire scientific data for establishing the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of pesticides in Korean red ginseng and its extract. Pesticides (azoxystrobin, fenhexamid, cyprodinil) were applied to a cultivated field of ginseng, and the fresh ginseng was harvested and processed to make Korean red ginseng and its extract. The reduction rates of the residue pesticides were calculated by determining the pesticide contents in each stage of ginseng processing. The residue levels in fresh ginseng were 0.12 ppm for azoxystrobin, 0.19 ppm for fenhexamid, and 1.78 ppm for cyprodinil. The residue levels in Korean red ginseng were 0.24, 0.54, and 1.49 ppm, and in the extract 0.81, 1.93, and 3.66 ppm for azoxystrobin, fenhexamid, and cyprodinil, respectively. The steaming and processing of fresh ginseng increased azoxystrobin and fenhexamid residues, but cyprodinil was reduced. The reduction rates (dry basis) of azoxystrobin, fenhexamid, and cyprodinil were 0.66, 0.94, and 0.28 for Korean red ginseng, and 3.25, 4.94, and 1.01 for the extract, respectively.

Pesticide Residues in Agricultural Products and Its Countermeasures for Safety (우리나라 농산물중의 잔류농약과 안전성)

  • Pesticides are regarded as one of indispensable materials used in agriculture to protect pests and to keep the agricultural productions steadily. However, food contamination arisen from their application has brought about public concerns for safety suspicion to human health. A brief presentation is given in this paper on what has been conducted against pesticide residues to evaluate and ensure the safety of agro-porducts. The commonest countermeasures to keep safety would be tile establishment of MRls and safe-use guidelines of pesticides according to good agricultural practices. Korean MRls have been established on 38 chemicals with 56 commodities and in the case of safe-use guidelines 344 formulation items have been done by the government On the other hand, no satisfactory information is still available to evalute the actual residue levels in domestic agro-products, but a cautious proposal could be suggested through the fragmentary monitoring data of pesticide residues, so that the current residue levels would be far from potent hazard enough to cause chronic impact on human. The most important thing is to have the farmers keep safe use guidelines at pesticide application for the production of safe agricultural commodities.

Analysis of Amoxicillin, Ampicillin, Oxolinic Acid, and Flumequin in Foods (식품 중 아목시실린, 암피실린, 옥소린산 및 플루메퀸의 분석)

  • The present study was performed to validate an analytical method for veterinary drugs, including amoxicillin, ampicillin, oxolinic acid and flumequin, in meat, fish, and their products as established in the 2007 Korea Food Code, and to monitor the respective drugs in 6 kinds of foods, namely beef, pork, flatfish, rockfish, freshwater eel and shrimp. Additionally, an HPLC-ESI-MS/MS method was developed for the qualification of these veterinary drugs. As a result of monitoring, these drugs were detected in 14 (3.6%) out of 393 samples. In particular, amoxicillin was detected in 9 flatfish samples, and oxolinic acid and flumequin were detected in 4 samples and 1 sample of freshwater eel, respectively. The detection levels of amoxicillin ranged from 0.009 to 0.078 mg/kg, in which 1 sample of flatfish contained more than the MRL (0.05 mg/kg). Flumequin detected in 1 sample of freshwater eel, was less than the MRL (0.5 mg/kg). Therefore, the majority of detected levels were less than the MRLs, with the exception of 2 samples showing amounts that were 1-2 times higher than the MRLs. The detected veterinary drugs were identified and confirmed by the HPLC-ESI-MS/MS method created in this study.

Residual Characteristics of Etofenprox and Methoxyfenozide in Chinese Cabbage (Etofenprox와 Methoxyfenozide의 배추 중 잔류특성)

  • Two insecticides, commonly used for Chinese cabbage, etofenprox and methoxyfenozide, were subjected to a field residue trial to evaluate safeties of the residues at harvest. The pesticides were sprayed onto the crop at recommended and double doses 10 days before the prearranged harvest and then sampling was done at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12 days after spraying. The amounts of pesticides residues in the crop were analyzed by chromatographic methods. Limits of detection (LODs) of both etofenprox and methoxyfenozide were $0.01mg\;kg^{-1}$ and mean recoveries were $96.76{\pm}2.67$ (CV=2.76%) and $95.84{\pm}2.57%$(CV=2.69%) in case of etofenprox and $103.26{\pm}3.21$ (CV=3.11%) and $94.50{\pm}1.35%$(CV=1.43%) in case of methoxyfenozide, respectively. Biological half-lives of etofenprox and methoxyfenozide were 3.2 and 3.5 days at the recommended dose and 2.7 and 3.5 days at the double dose, respectively. Initial residue levels of the pesticides at the recommended and double doses exceeded their MRLs, but final residue levels of the pesticides in the crop samples at harvest were less than their MRLs. The ratios of the EDI to ADI by intake the crop harvested 10 days after spraying were less than 4% of their ADIs, representing that residue levels of two pesticides at harvest were evaluated as safe.

Change of the Concentration of Pesticide Residues in Pepper Powder by Storage Temperature and Storage Period (저장온도와 기간에 따른 고춧가루 중 농약의 잔류량 변화)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine changes in the pesticides residues in pepper powder by storage conditions. Analysis of pesticide residues was performed using multiresidue analytical methods and the number of pesticides detected from 60 pepper powders was 7 pesticides such as cypermethrin, fenvalerate, kresoxim-methyl, chlorpyrifos, chlorfenapyr azoxystrobin, tebuconazole. The concentrations of cypermethrin and tebuconazole were exceeded their maximum residue limits (MRLs). The degradation patterns of pesticides at $-5^{\circ}C$ were compared to those at $20^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$. Without reference to storage temperature, degradation rates of azoxystrobin and fenvalerate were above 80%. Degradation rate of chlorpyrifos was 47% at storage $4^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and 34% at storage $-5^{\circ}C$. During each storage peroid, the degradation patterns were more lower at $-5^{\circ}C$ than at $20^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$.

A Survey on Safety of Commercial Fruit Teas in Gwangju Area (유통 열매 차류의 안전성 조사 - 구기자, 오미자, 산수유를 중심으로 -)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the residue amount of harmful materials on the 113 commercial fruit teas (Gugija, Omija, Sansuyu) in Gwangju area. It was performed using the GC-ECD, GC-NPD, GC-MSD and the LC-UVD, LC-FLD, LC-MSD to analyze 200 pesticides. The heavy metals were determined using a Mercury analyzer and AAS. The sulfur dioxides were analyzed by modified Monnier-Williams method. The residual pesticides were detected in 4 samples (Gugija). The mean values of heavy metal contents (mg/kg) were Pb, 0.024; Cd, 0.031; As, 0.010; Hg, 0.003. The measured values of Pb, Cd, As, Hg showed within MRLs. The sulfur dioxides were over MRLs in 4 samples (Gugija). These results will be used to establish on the regulation of commercial fruit teas in Gwangju area.
