In this paper, we present a efficient transcoding method from MPEG-2 to H.264. The proposed transcoder is the transcoding method for spatial domain which consists of MPEG-2 decoder part and H.264 encoding part. In transcoder, we can get useful information to estimate less probable modes from MPEG-2 decoder. Using this information, H.264 encoder chooses the macroblock mode of I-frame and P-frame adaptively to reduce the whole complexity of the transcoder. Our experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can archive about $30\sim60%$ computational saving without significant degradation of visual quality and increasing of bit rate.

In this paper, we propose a fast ME (motion estimation) algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264 Transcoder. Whereas 2 modes ($8{\times}8$, $16{\times}16$) are used for ME in MPEG-4 simple profile, ME using 7 modes is supported for further enhanced coding efficiency in H.264. The transcoding speed is affected dominantly by the computational complexity of encoder part in transcoder, where ME module of H.264 encoder has high complexity due to using 7 modes. In order to increase the speed of transcoding between MPEG-4 and H.264, we use 3 PMVs (predicted motion vectors) and the mode information of MBs (macroblocks) provided from the decoder part of transcoder. Since the proposed 3 PMVs are very close to an optimal motion vector, and we consider only some restricted modes according to the MB information transferred from decoder part, the proposed scheme can speed up the transcoding procedure without loss of image quality. We show experimental results which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, where performance of our scheme is compared with that of the conventional fast algorithm for H.264.
After the launch of MPEG-2, it is widely used in multimedia applications like a Digital-TV or a DVD. Then, After the launch of H.264 at 2004, it has been expected to replace MPEG-2 and services IPTV and DMB. As we have been used to MPEG-2 devices by this time, we can not access H.264 Broadcast with MPEG-2 device. So We propose a new approach to transcode H.264 video into MPEG-2 form which can facilitate to display H.264 video with MPEG-2 device. To reduce the quality loss by transcoding, we use CPDT(Cascaded Pixel Domain Transcoder) structure. And to minimize processing time, SKIP block, INTRA block and motion vectors obtain from decoding process is employed for transcoding. we use BMA(Boundary Matching Algorithm) to select only one from candidate motion vectors. Experimental results show a considerable improved PSNR with reduction in processing time compared with existing methods.

Most of the multimedia contents for DBM services art provided as MPEG-2 bit streams. However, they have to be transcoded to H.264 bit streams for practical services because the standard video codec for DMB is H.264. The existing transcoder architecture is Cascaded Pixel-Domain Transcoding Architecture, which consists of the MPEG-2 dacoding phase and the H.264 encoding phase. This architecture can be easily implemented using MPEG-2 decoder and H.264 encoder without source modifying. However. It has disadvantages in transcoding time and DCT-mismatch problem. In this paper, we propose two kinds of transcoder architecture, DCT-OPEN and DCT-CLOSED, to complement the CPDT architecture. Although DCT-OPEN has lower PSNR than CPDT due to drift problem, it is efficient for real-time transcoding. On the contrary, the DCT-CLOSED architecture has the advantage of PSNR over CPDT at the cost of transcoding time.
To improve video quality and coding efficiency, H.264/AVC adopts different half pixel calculating method compared with the previous standards. So, the transcoder requires additional works to transcode the pre-coded video contents with the previous standards to H.264/AVC in DCT domain. In this paper, we propose the first half-pixel correction method for MPEG-2 to H.264 transcoding in DCT domain. In the proposed method, MPEG-2 block is added to the correction block obtained by difference calculation of half-pixel values between two standards using DCT reference frame. Experimental results show that the proposed achieves better quality than pixel based cascaded transcoding method.

In this paper, we present a transcoding algorithm for converting an MPEG-2 video bitstream to an H.264 bitstream. The proposed transcoder consists of two parts. One is MPEG2 decoding part and the other is H.264 encoding part Because our algorithm is for transcoding in the spatial domain, MPEG2 decoding part carries out full decoding of MPEG2 bitstream. While, because macroblock type and coded block pattern in MPEG2 are significantly related to macroblock mode in H.264, macroblock mode is selected adaptively according to macroblock type and coded block pattern in H.264 decoding part. Furthermore, motion vector is also used as side-information for 16$\ctimes$16 macroblock mode. Simulation results show that the proposed transcoder yields high reduction of total transcoding time at comparable PSNR.
Efficient downscaling in a transcoder is important when the output should be converted to a lower resolution video. In this letter, we suggest an efficient algorithm for transcoding from MPEG-4 SP (with simple profile) to H.264/AVC with spatial downscaling. First, target image blocks are classified into monotonous, complex, and very complex regions for fast mode decision. Second, adaptive search ranges are applied to these image classes for fast motion estimation in an H.264/AVC encoder with predicted motion vectors. Simulation results show that our transcoder considerably reduces transcoding time while video quality is kept almost optimal.

The H.264/AVC is increasingly used in broadcast video applications such as Internet Protocol television (IPTV), digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) because of high compression performance. But the H.264/AVC coded video can be delivered to the widespread end-user equipment for MPEG-2 after transcoding between this video standards. This paper suggests a new transcoding algorithm for H.264/AVC to MPEG-2 transcoder that uses motion vector clustering in order to reduce the complexity without loss of video quality. The proposed method is exploiting the motion information gathered during h.264 decoding stage. To reduce the search space for the MPEG-2 motion estimation, the predictive motion vector is selected with a least distortion of the candidated motion vectors. These candidate motion vectors are considering the correlation of direction and distance of motion vectors of variable blocks in H.264/AVC. And then the best predictive motion vector is refined with full-search in ${\pm}2$ pixel search area. Compared with a cascaded decoder-encoder, the proposed transcoder achieves computational complexity savings up to 64% with a similar PSNR at the constant bitrate(CBR).

Since the high quality digital TV systems are broadly deployed in the market, the digital video contents will be edited and distributed in MPEG-2 MP@HL fonnat. Due to its impressive coding efficiency, the H.264/AVC codec has rapidly replaced the MPEG-4 SP codec for mobile digital video terminal with low quality. For the bro ad distribution of digitial video contents produced in MPEG-2 format, the MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC transcoding is highly necessary nowadays. In this paper, we propose a fast intra MB prediction mode decision method to reduce the computational complexity in the transcoding, which is the main bottleneck in the transcoders. The proposed method is based on the several relationships such as DCT coefficients and edge orientation, correlation between prediction directions in the $Intra16{\times}16$ and $Intra4{\times}4$ modes, correlation between edge-orientations of luminance an d chrominance components. The simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the computational complexity upto 70% and 40%, compared with the cascaded transcoder and the well-known fast intraframe transc oder, respectively.

In this paper, a transcoding method that transforms MPEG-4 video bitstream coded in 30 Hz frame rate into H.264 video bitstream of 15 Hz frame rate is proposed. The block modes and motion vectors in MPEG-4 is utilized in H.264 for block mode conversion and motion vector (MV) interpolation methods. The proposed three types of MV interpolation method can be used without performing full motion estimation in H.264. The proposed transcoder reduces computation amount for full motion estimation in H.264 and provides good quality of H.264 video at low bitrates. In experimental results, the proposed methods achieves 3.2-4 times improvement in computational complexity compared to the cascaded pixel-domain transcoding, while the PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) is degraded with 0.2-0.9dB depending on video sizes.
