  • Ab initio and extended Huckel calculations were carried out on the isomers of trans-RhCl(η2-C2H2)(PH3)2 (1). Due to π-back donation in 1 complex, the rotational energy barrier of alkyne ligand is computed to be in the range of 18.6-25.2 kcal/mol at MP4 levels. The optimized hydrido-alkynyl complex (2) at ab initio level has the distorted trigonal bipyramidal structure. Vinylidene complex (3) is computed to be more stable than 1 complex by 17.1 kcal/mol at MP4//MP2 level. The stabilities of isomers show similar trend at the various level calculations, that is, EHT, MP4//HF, and MP4//MP2 levels. The optimized geometries at ab initio level are in reasonable agreement with experimental data. A detailed account of the bonding in each isomers (1-3) have been carried out in terms of orbital analyses.

  • The barrier heights of the internal rotations for ethyl halides calculated by ab initio methods differ from those of experiments by more than 0.2 kcal/mol. The use of basis sets larger than the $6-31G^{\ast}$ set and the inclusion of correlation do not improve the agreement between the calculated and experimental values. The zero-point vibration corrections are substantial in the HF calculations with $6-31G^{\ast}$ basis sets, but become negligible in the MP2 calculations with $6-311G^{{\ast}{\ast}}$ basis sets for $C_2H_5F\;and\;C_2H_5Cl$. It is shown that the rigid rotor approximation and the assumed shape of the potential curve as a cos2${\theta}$ curve could also be the sources of discrepancies between calculated and experimental values. Higher order perturbation corrections narrow the gap between experimental and theoretical values, but there still remains about 10% overestimate of 0.3 kcal/mol. Optimized geometries from the HF and MP2 calculations are in good agreement with those from experiments. Dipole moments calculated from the MP2 densities show slightly better agreement with experiments than those from the HF densities.

  • Ab initio and extended Huckel calculations have been applied to discuss the electronic structure, ring inversion barrier, and geometry of the $Cp_2TiS_3$ compound. The deformation of four membered ring in the planar geometry is originated from a second-order Jahn-Teller distortion due to the small energy gap between HOMO and LUMO on the basis of extended Huckel calculations. The puckered $C_s$ geometry is stabilized by the interaction of the $x^2-y^2$ metal orbital with the hybrid orbital in sulfur. Ab initio calculations have been carried out to explore the ring inversion process for the model $Cl_2TiS_3$ compound. We have optimized $C_s$ and $C_{2v}$ structures of the model compound at the RHF level. The energy barriers for the ring inversion are sensitive to the used basis set. With 4-31$G^*$ for the Cl and S ligands, the barriers are computed to be 8.41 kcal/mol at MP2 and 8.02 kcal/mol at MP4 level.

  • Ab initio calculations were carried out on the gas phase acid-catalyzed hydrolysis reactions of sulfinamide using the 3-21G* basis sets. Single point calculations were also performed at the MP2/6-31G* level. The first step in the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of N-methylmethanesulfinamide, Ⅰ, involves protonation. The most favorable form is the O-protonated one, Ⅱ, which is then transformed into a sulfurane intermediate, Ⅲ, by addition of a water molecule. The reaction proceeds further by an intramolecular proton transfer from O to N (TS2), which is followed by N-S bond cleavage (TS3) leading to the final products. The rate determining step is the N-S bond cleavage (TS3) at the RHF/3-21G* level, whereas it becomes indeterminable at the MP2/6-31G*//3-21G* level of theory. However, the substituent effect studies with N-protonated N-arylmethanesulfinamide, ⅩⅢ, at the MP2/6-31G*//3-21G* level support the N-S bond breaking step as rate limiting.

  • For the study of hydrogen bonding phenomenon of high energetic compounds, we have been carried out a theoretical calculations for the nitromethane with the program Gaussian-98. The calculations at levels of restricted BLYP/6-311++G(d,p), B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) and MP2/6-311++G have been performed to obtain molecular structures, hydrogen bonding effects and vibrational spectra of nitromethane monomer and dimer. The results show nitromethane is favored to make two hydrogen bonds between molecules and the nitromethane dimer is more stable than the monomer about 15.2, 19.4 and 32.6 kJ/mol for the BLYP, B3LYP, and MP2 level calculations, respectively.

  • We carried out DFT calculations for monohydrated sulfuric and phosphoric acids. We are interested in clusters which differ in orientation of hydrogen atoms only. Such molecular complexes are close in energy, since they lie in the vicinity of the global minimum energy structure on the flat potential energy surface. For monohydrated sulfuric acid we identified four different isomers. The monohydrated phosphoric acid forms five different conformers. These systems are difficult to study from the theoretical point of view, since binding energy differences in several cases are very small. For each structure, we calculated harmonic vibrational frequencies to be sure that if the optimized structures are at the local or global minima on the potential energy surface. The analysis of calculated -OH vibrational frequencies is useful in interpretation of infrared photodissociation spectroscopy experiments. We employed four different DFT functionals in our calculations. For each structure, we calculated binding energies, thermodynamic properties, and harmonic vibrational frequencies. Our analysis clearly shows that DFT approach is suitable for studying monohydrated inorganic acids with different hydrogen atom orientations. We carried out MP2 calculations with aug-cc-pVDZ basis set for both monohydrated acids. MP2 results serve as a benchmark for DFT calculations.

  • Ab initio quantum chemical molecular orbital calculations have been performed for the unimolecular decomposition of methacrylonitrile ($CH_3C(CN)=CH_2$), especially for HCN and $H_2$ molecular elimination channels. Structures and energies of the reactants, products, and relevant species along the individual reaction pathways were determined by MP2 gradient optimization and MP4 single point energy calculations. Direct four-center elimination of HCN and three-center elimination of H2 channels were identified. In addition, H or CN migration followed by HCN or H2 elimination channels via the methylcyanoethylidene intermediate was also identified. Unlike the case of crotonitrile previously studied, in which the dominant decomposition process was the direct three-center elimination of HCN, the most important reaction pathway should be the direct threecenter elimination of $H_2$ in the case of methacrylonitrile.

  • The structures of 1-fluorosilatrane and the silatranyl cation were calculated by Hartree-Fock (HF), Mofller-Plesset second order (MP2), and various density functional theory (DFT) methods using many different basis sets, demonstrating that the Si-N bonds in two species are quite different. The N${\rightarrow}$Si bond distance of 1-fluorosilatrane from the hybrid DFT calculations $({\sim}2.32{\AA})$ using the Perdew-Wang correlation functional agrees with the gas phase experimental value $(2.324{\AA})$, while other functionals yield larger distances. The MP2 bond distance (2.287${\AA}$ with 6-311$G^{\ast}$) is shorter, and the HF one (2.544 ${\AA}$ with 6-311$G^{\ast}$) larger than those of DFT calculations. The MP2 bond distance is in good agreement with experiment indicating that the electron correlations are crucial for the correct description of the N${\rightarrow}$Si interaction. The silatranyl cation is a stable local minimum on the potential energy surface in all methods employed suggesting that the cation could be a reaction intermediate. The Si-N bond length for the cation is about 1.87 ${\AA}$ for all calculations tested implying that the Si-N bond is mainly conventional. Bonding characteristics of the Si-N bond in two species derived from the natural bond orbital analysis support the above argument based on calculated bond lengths.
