  • To study the effects of substances in paeonia seeds (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) on lipid metabolism, crude methanol extract and secondary ether-soluble fraction out of defatted methanol extract and trans-resveratrol were prepared from the seeds and added to 0.5% (w/w) cholesterol diets for rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 120$\pm$11 g were divided into six experimental groups: control group with no extra supplement, 0.1% (MP1) and 0.2% methanol extract (MP2) supplemented groups, 0.05% (EP1) and 0.1% ether-soluble fraction (EP2) supplemented groups and 0.02% resveratrol supplemented group. Experimental diets were fed ad libitum to the rats for 3 weeks. Body weight gains and food efficiencies were not different among the six experimental groups. Relative liver weights were lower in EP2 group compared to those in control group, but serum GOT and GPT levels of paeonia seed groups including trans-resveratrol group were not different from those of the control group. Serum total cholesterol levels reduced in EP2 and resveratrol groups but HDL-/total cholesterol ratios significantly increased in the four paeonia groups except EP1 group compared with the control group and serum triglyceride level lowered only in EP2 group than that of the control. However, liver cholesterol levels lowered in the five paeonia groups but triglyceride level lowered in MP2, EP1, EP2 groups than that of the control group. Fecal cholesterol excretion significantly increased in MP2, EP1, and EP2 groups than that of the control group, but bile acid excretions were not changed except that a reduction in EP2 group. These results suggest that paeonia seeds contain substances improving serum lipid status mostly via HDL pathway and resveratrol as monomer is one of the effective components but others including resveratrol oligmer are involved in the lipid improving effect.

  • The technical parameters and imaging interpretation criteria of the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System version 2 (PI-RADS v2) using multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) are updated in PI-RADS v2.1. These changes have been an expected improvement for prostate cancer evaluation, although some issues remain unsolved, and new issues have been raised. In this review, a brief overview of PI-RADS v2.1 is and several critical points are discussed as follows: the need for more detailed protocols of mpMRI, lack of validation of the revised transition zone interpretation criteria, the need for clarification for the revised diffusion-weighted imaging and dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging criteria, anterior fibromuscular stroma and central zone assessment, assessment of background signal and tumor aggressiveness, changes in the structured report, the need for the parameters for imaging quality and performance control, and indications for expansion of the system to include other indications.

  • In this paper. we propose a coding method using a matching pursuit algorithm in a strongly periodic highband signal. Also. we propose an efficient quantizer for the estimated parameters : spectral magnitude and phase. Based on the error concealment principle and sinusoidal model. the MP algorithm requires the high-precision pitch period estimation. To estimate more accurate pitch period. the refined pitch obtained from lowband speech is used. which increases the efficiency of bit allocation. The spectral magnitude parameters are quantized by the method which is combined with MDCT (Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) and multi-stage structure. The spectral phase quantizer uses the $2{\pi}$ modular characteristic of phases and the weighted function by spectral magnitudes. To evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. we applied it to analysis-by-synthesis system. Furthermore we suggest the possibillity of scalable wideband speech codecs based on band-split structure.

  • In order to improve the compressive strength of graphite foams (GFms), mesophase pitch (MP) was stabilized in air atmosphere and then fluorinated at different conditions. The Fluorine/Carbon (F/C) in surface-chemical contents of fluorinated MP has range of 23.75%~61.48% according to the different fluorine partial pressure. The compressive strengths of GFms prepared from fluorinated MP were increased in proportion to the apparent densities. The compressive strength of the GFm produced from MP with 35.93% of F/C (%) showed maximum value in $2.93{\pm}0.06MPa$, which was increased up to 27.95% than that of the GFm prepared from un-fluorinated MP. This result was attributed that the interface bonding between of MPs due to fluorine functional groups with high surface energy helped to improve compressive strength of the GFm.

  • In order to improve the calculation speed of an integrating-sphere simulator based on a ray-tracing method, parallel processing with OpenMP directive was implemented into the simulator and the randomness of Monte Carlo method was guaranteed by utilizing a parallel random number generator. It was confirmed that simulation results obtained with more than $10^7$ rays showed good agreement with theoretical results within the error range of 0.5%, and that the calculation speed improved as the number of threads increased. Finally, the spatial response distribution functions of a real integrating sphere were simulated and compared with previous results.

  • This is a study path analysis for relationship among multicultural perception(MP), cultural competence(CC) and professional self-concept(PSC). The survey was performed on 245 nursing students in one university. Data was collected using structured questionnaire and analysed with PASW 18.0, AMOS 18.0. Model fit indices were in good agreement with recommended level($x^2/df=1.170$, GFI=.992, AGFI=.970, RMSEA=.027, CFI=.995, NFI=.967). Based on path model CC showed a direct effect on PSC while MP, satisfaction in major(SM), and interpersonal relationship(IR) showed a indirect effect. The MP and SM showed a direct effect on CC while IR showed a indirect effect and SM and IR showed a direct effec on MP. The findings indicate the necessity of developing educational programs to enhance nursing student's MP and CC for increasing of PSC.

  • Objective: To investigate the effects of the long-term use of a maxillary protraction facemask with miniplate (FM-MP) on pharyngeal airway dimensions in growing patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Methods: The study included 24 boys with CLP (mean age, 12.2 years; mean duration of FM-MP therapy, 4.9 years), divided into two groups according to the amount of A point advancement to the vertical reference plane (VRP): Group 1, > 4 mm; Group 2, < 2 mm; n = 12/group. After evaluating the skeletodental and airway variables using lateral cephalograms acquired before and after FM-MP therapy, statistical analyses were performed. Results: Group 1 showed greater forward and downward displacements of the posterior maxilla (posterior nasal spine [PNS]-horizontal reference plane [HRP]; PNS-VRP), greater increase in ANB, more forward tongue position (tongue tip-Pt vertical line to Frankfort horizontal plane), and greater increase in the oropharynx (superior posterior airway space [SPAS]; middle airway space [MAS]) and upper nasopharynx (PNS-adenoid2) than did Group 2. While maxillary advancement (A-VRP and PNS-VRP) correlated with increases in SPAS, MAS, and PNS-adenoid2, downward displacement of the PNS (PNS-HRP) correlated with increases in SPAS, MAS, PNS-adenoid1, and PNS-adenoid2, and with a decrease in vertical airway length (VAL). Mandibular forward displacement and decrease in mandibular plane correlated with increases in MAS. Conclusions: FM-MP therapy had positive effects on the oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway spaces without increases in VAL in Group 1 rather than in Group 2. However, further validation using an untreated control group is necessary.
