Updating of FE models of an instrumented G+9 RC building using measured data from strong motion and ambient vibration survey

  • A number of structural and modal parameters are derived from the strong motion records of an instrumented G + 9 storeyed RC building during Bhuj earthquake, 26 Jan. 2001 in India. Some of the extracted parameters are peak floor accelerations, storey drift and modal characteristics. Modal parameters of the building are also compared with the values obtained from ambient vibration survey of the instrumented building after the occurrence of earthquake. These parameters are further used for calibrating the accuracy of fixed-base Finite Element (FE) models considering structural and non-structural elements. Some conclusions are drawn based on theoretical and experimental results obtained from strong motion records and time history analysis of FE models. An important outcome of the study is that strong motion peak acceleration profile in two horizontal directions is close to FE model in which masonry infill walls are modeled.

  • Laser Inertial Navigation System(LINS) consists of Ring Laser Gyroscopes(RLG) and accelerometers. RLG has a lock-in region in which there is zero output for input angular rates less than about 0.1deg/sec. The lock-in region is generated by the imperfect mirrors in RLG. To avoid the lock-in region, a sinusoidal motion called dither motion is applied on RLG. Therefore this dither motion is measured by RLG/accelerometer even if at a stop state. In this situation, the performance on the initial alignment of LINS can be degraded. In this paper, we analyze the performance on the initial alignment of LINS theoretically and experimentally. Analysis results include how dither motion, the pre-filter and the corner frequency in alignment loop affects the performance on the initial alignment of LINS.

A study on Moving Surface Method to Consider a Motion of Electrical Machine with Finite Element Method (움직임을 고려한 전기기기의 유한요소기법에 관한 연구)

  • As one of numerical methods, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is very widely used to analyze electrical machines these days. However, the most electrical machines have a motion and it is very important to consider a motion in electrical machine analysis. In this paper, Moving Surface Method is suggested as a new approach to consider a motion and discuss its advantages and disadvantages. And also, a finite element analysis program which applied Moving Surface Method is developed and we evaluate its results compared with experimental results of a real model.

  • This paper proposes an optimal design for a precision motion stage employing a parallelogram flexure hinge. The voltage applied to the piezo element produces motion that is amplified through a 3-stage amplification structure. Especially, instead of the generally used conic section flexure hinge a parallelogram shaped flexure hinge is used that improves the flexibility of the lever. An Finite Element Analysis is performed on each motion stage lever where optimal design was achieved using Response Surface Methodology(RSM).

  • This paper presents the swing motion analysis of the container crane headblock with the passive control device using hydraulic motors and anti-swing ropes. The device hauls at the headblock to opposite direction of its swing motion using the tension difference between anti-swing ropes connected to the headblock. To consider this control mechanism, the headblock is modelled as the rigid bar suspended by two hoist ropes at the overhead trolley and its non-linear equation of motion is derived using Lagrange's equation. Some numerical experiments using the equation are carried out to investigate the swing motion characteristics of the headblock under the variation of geometric relation among the cargo handling components and to evaluate the performance of the anti-swing device.

  • Human motion analysis is researched as a new method for human-robot interaction (HRI) because it concerns with the key techniques of HRI such as motion tracking and pose recognition. To analysis human motion, extracting features of human body from sequential images plays an important role. After finding the silhouette of human body from the sequential images obtained by CCD color camera, the skeleton model is frequently used in order to represent the human motion. In this paper, using the silhouette of human body, we propose the feature extraction method based on hybrid skeleton for detecting human motion. Finally, we show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.

  • A numerical procedure is described for estimating the effects of the multi-directional irregular waves on the motion responses and tension variations of the ISSC-TLP. The numerical approach is based on a three-dimensional source distribution method and a spectral analysis technique of directional waves. The spectral description for the linear system of ISSC-TLP in the frequency domain is sufficient to completely define the motion responses and tension variations. This is because both the wave inputs and responses are stationary Gaussian random processes, of which the statistical properties in the amplitude domain are well known. The numerical results for the linear motion responses and tension variations in regular waves are compared with the experimental and numerical ones, which are obtained in the literature. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.

Analysis of the Snake motion of One High Speed Freight Car (고속화차 한량의 사행동 해석)

  • The development of railway vehicle and bogie involves the proper selection of design parameters not only to achieve high speed but also to reduce the vibration of the train. In this study an analytical model of a high speed freight car is developed to find the critical speed. The high speed freight car can generate the snake motion of the lateral and yawing motion of the car body, the bogie, and the wheelset. Numerical analysis for the nonlinear equation motions with 17 degrees of freedom showed the running stability and critical speed due to the snake motion. Also, the vibration modes of tile high speed freight car was calculated using ADAMS RAIL, which showed that the critical speed have the yawing modes of the car body and the bogie. Finally, this paper shows that the snake motion of the vehicle can be controlled with the modifications of the design parameters.

  • This paper is concerned with the application of perturbation method to the dynamic analysis of free-free beam. In general, the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are analyzed separately. However, the rigid-body motions cause vibrations and elastic vibrations also affect rigid-body motions in turn, which indicates that the rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations are coupled in nature. The resulting equations of motion are hybrid and nonlinear. We can discretize the equations of motion by means of admissible functions but still we have to cope with nonlinear equations. In this paper, we propose the use of .perturbation method to the coupled equations of motion. The resulting equations consist of zero-order equations of motion which depict the rigid-body motions and first-order equations of motion which depict the perturbed rigid-body motions and elastic vibrations. Numerical results show the efficacy of the proposed method.

  • Vibration of a beam translating over supports in vertical motion is investigated in this paper. Equations of motion are formulated using the virtual work principle by regarding the supports as kinematical constraints imposed on an unrestrained beam and by discretizing the beam via the assumed mode method. Differential-algebraic equations of motion are derived and reduced to differential equations in independent generalized coordinates by the generalized coordinate partitioning method. Geometric stiffness of the beam due to translating motion is considered and how the geometric stiffness of beam affects dynamic stability is also investigated. Instability of the beam. in various conditions is also investigated using Floquet theory and then the results are verified through the dynamic response analysis. Results of numerical simulation are presented for various prescribed motions of the beam.
