  • GPS has become an established technique in structural health monitoring. This paper presents the application of an on-line GPS RTK system on the Zhujiang Huangpu Bridge (China) for monitoring bridge deck and towers movements. In this study, both the form and functions of movements of the deck and towers of the bridge under affecting loads were monitored in lateral, longitudinal and vertical directions. Such movements were described in time and frequency domains by determining the trend, torsion, periodical of the series using probability density function (PDF). The results of the time series GPS data are practical and useful to bridge health monitoring.

Under the guidance of absolute degradation thought, this paper proposes the technological framework for monitoring and appraising cultivated land degradation based on the 3S technique. We can apply 3S technique and analyze the nature, the environmental, the social, and the economic elements which influence the land utilization and degradation synthetically, to set up the indicator system of the cultivated land degradation monitoring and assessment based on 3S technique; to propose the degradation information extraction methods based on 3S technique; to create the quantitative assessment model and method for land degradation; to analyze the ecological environment response of land use and degradation quantitatively; and to propose the measure, policy and suggestion for solving the land degradation problem from the point of view of land utilization.

  • Real-time near and far-field monitoring of concrete structural components gives enough information on the time and condition at which damage occurs, thereby facilitating damage detection while in the same time evaluate the cause of the damage. This paper experimentally investigates an integrated monitoring technique for near and far-field damage detection in concrete structures based on simultaneous use of electromechanical admittance technique in combination with guided wave propagation. The proposed sensing system does not measure the electromechanical admittance itself but detect time variations in output voltages of the response signal obtained across the electrodes of piezoelectric transducers bonded on surfaces of concrete structures. The damage identification is based on the spectral estimation MUSIC algorithm. Experimental results show the efficiency and performance of the proposed measuring technique.

  • Condition monitoring technique used in the military is JOAP, for which the spectroscopic analysis is applied. However it is known that the technique has some problems in economical and practical point of view. This study introduces a new technique for measuring wear in real time base and applies the technique to a high power semi-automatic transmission. The results show the feasibility by measuring the concentration of ferrous wear particles from the transmission oil.

  • Continuous on-line temperature monitoring allows corrective measures to be taken to prevent upcoming failure. Continuous temperature monitoring and event recording provides information on the energized equipment's response to normal and emergency conditions. On-line temperature monitoring helps to coordinate equipment specifications and ratings, determine the real limits of the monitored equipment and optimize facility operations. Using wireless technique eliminates any need for special cables and wires with lower installation costs if compared to other types of online condition monitoring equipment. In addition, wireless temperature monitoring works well under difficult conditions in strategically important locations. Wireless technology for on-line condition monitoring of energized equipment is applicable both as standalone system and with an interface with power quality monitoring system.

  • Scaffold is the most commonly used equipment in various types of construction works. Since various types of construction works use the same scaffold equipment, it becomes more difficult to be controlled and managed, thus resulting hazard frequently. According to the information announced in July 2012 by Council of Labor Affairs Executive Yan, the site collapse or incomplete anti-falling protection has led the site to accident frequently, and this is the main reason that causes construction industry occupational disasters. The labor death occupational hazard ratio rises up to 13% in scaffold activity, and the Council of Labor Affairs Executive Yan has showed that the death ratio is higher when using the scaffold in construction site, the total number of death has reached to 139 from 2005 to 2010. In order to ensure the safety of scaffold user, this study tends to build a wireless sensor monitoring system to detect the reliability and safety of the scaffold. The wireless sensor technique applies in this study is different with the traditional monitoring technique which is limited with wired monitoring. Wireless sensor technique does not need wire, it just needs to consider the power supply for establishing the network and receiving stable information, and it can become a monitoring system. In addition, this study also integrates strain gauge technique in this scaffold monitoring system, to develop a real-time monitoring data transfer mechanism and replace the traditional wired single project monitoring equipment. This study hopes to build a scaffold collapse monitoring system to effectively monitor the safety of the scaffold as well as provide the timesaving installation, low-cost and portable features.

  • A field-oriented UHF system for on-line PD monitoring of transformers is designed, which has been installed inside the oil tank of a 220kV transformer in a substation. This system has successfully captured long intermittent discharge signals that hadn't been detected through conventional techniques, and solved the problem successfully. The results demonstrate that UHF technique has great advantages for on-line PD monitoring of transformers. By adopting the peak detection technique, it becomes easy and effective for the transplantation of the phase-resolved pattern recognition technique from conventional method to UHF method, and then to realize continuous on-line monitoring, source characterization and trending analysis.

  • This paper presents a prestress-loss monitoring technique for prestressed concrete (PSC) girder structures that uses a vibration-based system identification method. First, the theoretical backgrounds of the prestress-loss monitoring technique and the system identification technique are presented. Second, vibration tests are performed on a lab-scaled PSC girder for which the modal parameter was measured for several prestress-force cases. A numerical modal analysis is performed by using an initial finite element (FE) model from the geometric, material, and boundary conditions of the lab-scaled PSC girder. Third, a vibration-based system identification is performed to update the FE model by identifying structural parameters since the natural frequency of the FE model became identical to the experimental results. Finally, the feasibility of the prestress-loss monitoring technique is evaluated for the PSC girder model by using the experimentally measured natural frequency and numerically identified natural frequency for several prestress-force cases.

  • This paper presents hybrid structural damage monitoring system which performs both global damage assessment of structure and damage detection of local structural joints. Hybrid damage monitoring system is composed of vibration-based technique and electro/mechanic impedance technique. Vibration-based technique detects global characteristic change ot structure using modal characteristic change of structure, and electro/mechanical impedance technique detects damage existence of local structural joints using impedance change of PZT sensor. For the verification of the proposed hybrid monitoring system, a series of damage scenarios are designed to loosened bolts situations of the structural joints, and acceleration response and impedance response signatures are measured. The proposed hybrid monitoring system is implemented to monitor global damage-state and local damages in structural joints.
