In this research the effect of bedding layer angle and bedding layer thickness on the shear failure mechanism of concrete has been investigated using PFC3D. For this purpose, firstly calibration of PFC3d was performed using Brazilian tensile strength. Secondly shear test was performed on the bedding layer. Thickness of layers were 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm. in each thickness layer, layer angles changes from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ with increment of $25^{\circ}$. Totally 15 model were simulated and tested by loading rate of 0.016 mm/s. The results shows that when layer angle is less than $50^{\circ}$, tensile cracks initiates between the layers and propagate till coalesce with model boundary. Its trace is too high. With increasing the layer angle, less layer mobilize in failure process. Also the failure trace is very short. It's to be note that number of cracks decrease with increasing the layer thickness. The minimum shear test strength was occurred when layer angle is more than $50^{\circ}$. The maximum value occurred in $0^{\circ}$. Also, the shear test tensile strength was increased by increasing the layer thickness.

In order to analyze the water storage of the Daecheong dam after constructing the Yongdam dam situated in upstream, a daily cascaded simulation model for analyzing water storages in the Yongdam-Daecheong dams was developed. Operation scenarios of the Yongdam dam were selected to 8 cases with the combinations of downstream outflows and water supplies to the Jeonju region. Daily water storages in the Daecheong dam was analyzed daily by simulating from 1983 to 2004. The results are summarized as follows. Firstly, water supplies from the Daecheong dam were analyzed to amount $1,964.2Mm^3$ on a yearly average in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, water supplies from the Daecheong dam were analyzed to amount $1,858.7\~1,927.3Mm^3$ in case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3$ is, and were analyzed to amount $1,994.9\~2,017.8Mm^3$ in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s $. These values are compared to $1,649Mm^3$ applied in design. Secondly, reservoir use rate which was defined rate of water supply to effective water storage reached $241.3\% in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, reservoir use rate reached $228.3\~236.8\% In case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3/s$, and reached $245.1\~247.9\% in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$. Thirdly, runoff rate which is defined rate of dam inflow to areal rainfall reached $57.3\% in case without the Yongdam dam. In case with the Yongdam dam, reservoir use rate reached $62.0\~68.4\% in case with downstream outflow of $5\;m^3/s$, and reached $64.1\~68.5\% in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$. Fourth, in case with downstream outflow of $10\;m^3/s$ is from the Yongdam dam, appropriate water supply amounts to the Jeonju region were analyzed to only $0.50Mm^3/day$ from the daily simulation of water storages in the Yongdam dam. Comprehensively, water supply capacity of the Daecheong dam was analyzed to affect in small amounts in spite of the construction of the Yonsdam dam. It is effected to achieve the effective water management of the Yongdam dam and the Daecheong dam by using the developed cascaded model.
A two dimensional large scale laser digitizer with a cordless cursor was developed. The coordinate detecting scheme of this digitizer is fundamentally based on the triangulation method, in which two laser-rays are scanned by the rotating plane mirros, reflected backward by the cursor, reflected again by the rotating mirrors, and detected by optical sensors. From angles in which the cursor reflections are detected, we can determine the position of the cursor. But this method involves several problems about optical alignment and its calibration especially when it is applied to a large scale digitizer. In this paper, especially we propose simulation for error analysis with connection to angles measured at five control points which are needed to decide an appropriate model for calculating coordinates and optimal simulation for deciding the position of five control points to give the better coordinate accuracy. In this way, we realized the on-site calibration and on-site insurance of measurement accuracy with our appropriate model for calculating coordinates. The time required for on-site calibration is within 5 minutes and the average accuracy of 4m * 3m digitizer is about .+-.0.12mm.

The bolier systems of coal fired power plants are large, non-linear systems with numerous interactions between its component parts. In the analysis of such complex systems, dynamic simulation is recognized as a powerful method of keeping track of the myriad of interactions. The boiler system consists of air/gas system and water/steam system. Due to recent reinforcement of environmental regulation on pollutant discharge and requirements of design validation on properites of boiler, the commercial programs are used for the analysis of boiler system. This paper addressed to the development of model using MMS(Modular Modeling System) developed by EPRI(Electric Power Research Institute) as the simulation tool. The developed model using MMS is tested for the design and local data on boiler combustion system of korea standard coal fired power plant boiler. The simulation results show that the developed model well reproduces responses of the combustion system with less than ${\pm}$5% error under steady state and transient state conditions. The developed model for analysis of the combustion system in this paper is general and applicable to any type of coal fired power plant.

It is well known that water jetting is now widely used in the advanced cutting processes of polymers, metals, glass, ceramics, and composite materials because of some advantages, such as heatless and non-contacting cutting different from the laser beam machining. In this paper, we proposed the simulation model of waterjet by lengths and the inner spiral structure of the nozzle. The simulation results show that the outlet velocity of the nozzle is faster than the inlet. Furthermore, we found rapid velocity reduction after passing through the outlet. The nozzle of diameter ${\phi}500$ and length 70mm, shows the optimal fluid width and velocity distribution. Also, the nozzle with inner spiral structure shows a Gaussian distribution of velocity and this model is almost twice as fast as the model without spiral structure, within the effective standoff distance (2.5 mm). In the future, when inserting abrasive material into the waterjet, we plan to analyze the fluid flow and the particle behavior through a simulation model.
The tropopause fold event that took place on January 1, 1997 over mid-region on the Korean Peninsula is examined by means of a numerical simulation based on a Mesoscale Model (MM5). The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of moisture in reinforcing a tropopause fold linked to an explosive cyclone. Two types of simulations were carried out; 1) simulations for moist conditions in which full physical and dynamic processes are considered and 2) simulations for dry conditions in which cumulus parameterization and cloud microphysics process are excluded. The results of the moist condition simulations demonstrate that the intensity of the central pressure of the cyclone was overestimated compared with the observed values and that the location of the center and the pressure deepening rates (-17 hPa/12 hr) complied with the observed values. The potential vorticity (PV) anomaly on the isentropic surface at 305 K continued to move in a southeast direction on January 1, 1997 and thus created a single tube of tropopause fold covering the northern and the middle area of the Korean Peninsula and reaching the ground surface at 0300 UTC and 0600 UTC. The results of the dry condition simulations show that the tropopause descended to 500 and 670 hPa in 0300 and 0600 UTC, respectively at the same location for the moist condition simulation; however, there was no deep tropopause fold observed. A comparison of the simulated data between the moist and the dry conditions suggests that a deep tropopause fold should happen when there is sufficient moist in the atmosphere and significantly large PV in the lower atmosphere pulls down the upper atmosphere rather than when the tropopause descends itself due to dynamic causes. Thus, it is estimated that moisture in the atmosphere should have played a crucial role in a deep tropopause fold process.
Purpose: To demonstrate the high-resolution numerical simulation of the respiration-induced dynamic $B_0$ shift in the head using generalized susceptibility voxel convolution (gSVC). Materials and Methods: Previous dynamic $B_0$ simulation research has been limited to low-resolution numerical models due to the large computational demands of conventional Fourier-based $B_0$ calculation methods. Here, we show that a recently-proposed gSVC method can simulate dynamic $B_0$ maps from a realistic breathing human body model with high spatiotemporal resolution in a time-efficient manner. For a human body model, we used the Extended Cardiac And Torso (XCAT) phantom originally developed for computed tomography. The spatial resolution (voxel size) was kept isotropic and varied from 1 to 10 mm. We calculated $B_0$ maps in the brain of the model at 10 equally spaced points in a respiration cycle and analyzed the spatial gradients of each of them. The results were compared with experimental measurements in the literature. Results: The simulation predicted a maximum temporal variation of the $B_0$ shift in the brain of about 7 Hz at 7T. The magnitudes of the respiration-induced $B_0$ gradient in the x (right/left), y (anterior/posterior), and z (head/feet) directions determined by volumetric linear fitting, were < 0.01 Hz/cm, 0.18 Hz/cm, and 0.26 Hz/cm, respectively. These compared favorably with previous reports. We found that simulation voxel sizes greater than 5 mm can produce unreliable results. Conclusion: We have presented an efficient simulation framework for respiration-induced $B_0$ variation in the head. The method can be used to predict $B_0$ shifts with high spatiotemporal resolution under different breathing conditions and aid in the design of dynamic $B_0$ compensation strategies.

Prognostic meteorological model, MM5V3 (Mesoscale Model 5 Version 3) was used to assess the effects of the land-use modifications on spatial variations of temperature and wind fields in Busan during the selected period of summer season in 2000. We first examined sensitivity analysis for temperature between MM5V3 predictions and meteorological data observed at 4 AWS (Automatic Weather System) stations in Busan, which exhibited low structural and accurate errors (Mean Bias Error, MBE: 0.73, Root Mean Square Error, RMSE: 1.18 on maximum). The second part of this paper, MMSV3 simulations for the modification of land-use was performed with 1 km resolution in target domain, 46$\times$46 $\textrm{km}^2$ area around city of Busan. It was found that modification result from change of surface land-use in central urban area altered spatial distributions of temperature and wind. In particular, heat island core moved slightly to the seaward at 1300 LST. This results may imply that modification of surface land-use leads to change the thermal environments; in addition, it has a significant effect on local wind circulations and dispersions of air pollutants.
The applications of high-frequency induction heating has recently been studied in various industrial fields. In this study, induction heating is applied to a SCM440 specimen that is widely used in industry. The specimen was made up of a cylinder 20 mm in diameter and 160 mm long. An induction heating power supply module was used to generate heat in the cylinder at a high frequency (approximately 85 kHz) for 50 seconds. The temperature of the specimen was measured at the 150 mm length in 5 second intervals. Results such as joule heat and temperature are compared with the numerical model analysis using an electromagnetic-thermal co-simulation technique. The analytical model of the cylinder was modeled by considering the skin effect. The median measured temperature after induction heating was conducted for 50 seconds was $57.65^{\circ}C$, compared to a predicted analytical value of $57.27^{\circ}C$. Thus, the analytical results are in good agreement with the experimental results, and this model can predict the induction heating phenomenon numerically.
Geogrid application that has proved to be an effective and economic method of reinforcing particles, is widely used in geotechnical engineering. The discrete element method (DEM) has been used to investigate the micro mechanics of the geogrid deformation and also the interlocking mechanism that cannot be easily studies in laboratory tests. Two types of realistically shaped geogrid models with square and triangle apertures were developed using parallel bonds in PFC3D. The calibration test simulations have demonstrated that the precisely shaped triangular geogrid model is also able to reproduce the deformation and strength characteristics of geogrids. Moreover, the square and triangular geogrid models were also used in DEM pull-out test simulations with idealized shape particle models for validation. The simulation results have been shown to provide good predictions of pullout force as a function of displacement especially for the initial 30 mm displacement. For the granular material of size 40 mm, both the experimental and DEM results demonstrate that the triangular geogrid of size 75 mm outperforms the square geogrid of size 65 mm. Besides, the simulations have given valuable insight into the interaction between particle and geogrid and also revealed similar deformation behavior of geogrids during pullout. Therefore, the DEM provides a tool which enable to model other possible prototype geogrid and investigate their performance before manufacture.
