Synthesis and physicochemical characterization of NixZnx-Fe2O4/MWCNT nanostructures as enzyme mimetics with peroxidase-like catalytic activity

  • Carbon-based magnetic nanostructures in several instances have resulted in improved physicochemical and catalytic properties when compared to multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and magnetic nanoparticles. In this study, magnetic MWCNTs with a structure of $Ni_xZn_xFe_2O_4/MWCNT$ as peroxidase mimics were fabricated by the one-pot hydrothermal method. The structure, composition and morphology of the nanocomposites were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic properties were investigated with a vibrating sample magnetometer. The peroxidase-like catalytic activity of the nanocomposites was investigated by colorimetric and electrochemical tests with 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and $H_2O_2$ as the substrates. The results show that the synthesis of the nanocomposites was successfully performed. XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline structures of the $Ni_xZn_xFe_2O_4/MWCNT$ nanohybrids and MWCNTs. The main peaks of the $Ni_xZn_xFe_2O_4/MWCNT$s crystals were presented. The $Ni_{0.25}Zn_{0.25}Fe_2O_4/MWCNT$ and $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4/MWCNT$ nanocatalysts showed nearly similar physicochemical properties, but the $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4/MWCNT$ nanocatalyst was more appropriate than the $Ni_{0.25}Zn_{0.25}Fe_2O_4/MWCNT$ nanocatalyst in terms of the magnetic properties and catalytic activity. The optimum peroxidase-like activity of the nanocatalysts was obtained at pH 3.0. The $Ni_{0.5}Zn_{0.5}Fe_2O_4/MWCNT$ nanocatalyst exhibited a good peroxidase-like activity. These magnetic nanocatalysts can be suitable candidates for future enzyme-based applications such as the detection of glucose and $H_2O_2$.

Design of Web-Based Digital Contents for Cyber University (Cyber 대학을 위한 Web 기반 컨텐츠 설계)

  • The cyber university, which authoring systems for digital contents using multimedia technologies ate used for its courses, is highlighted to be a promising alternative for the current off-line education system. As the demand for the authoring system is constantly increasing, many systems, which emphasize the developers' convenience only, are currently used. Since the generated digital contents using these systems are failed to draw the learners' active interaction with contents, the new authoring system is expected to be existed. This paper presents, develops, and implements the new contents authoring system by using programing languages and/or software tools based on the storyboard. The presented, developed, and implemented system mimics the face-to-face education in off-line system, induces the users' active interaction with contents, and the effective evaluation system to the users.

  • Solitary necrotic nodule (SNN) of the liver is a very uncommon benign lesion, and it is detected incidentally as a rule. It is important to differentiate SNN radiologically from various single hepatic nodules because SNN mimics hepatic metastasis, especially in staging work up of known primary malignancy. The reported imaging findings of SNN are well-defined nodule without enhancement or with subtle peripheral enhancement. There has been no report about the target-like SNN of the liver and about the imaging finding of 3T magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography. We report a case of targetlike SNN of the liver, mimicking hepatic metastasis, with findings of various imaging modalities and try to find a cause of this nodule according to the pathologic and literature review.

Optimized AntNet-Based Routing for Network Processors (네트워크 프로세서에 적합한 개선된 AntNet기반 라우팅 최적화기법)

  • In this paper, a new modified and optimized AntNet algorithm which can be implemented efficiently onto network processor is proposed. The AntNet that mimics the activities of the social insect is an adaptive agent-based routing algorithm. This method requires a complex arithmetic calculating system. However, since network processors have simple arithmetic units for a packet processing, it is very difficult to implement the original AntNet algorithm on network processors. Therefore, the proposed AntNet algorithm is a solution of this problem by decreasing arithmetic executing cycles for calculating a reinforcement value without loss of the adaptive performance. The results of the simulations show that the proposed algorithm is more suitable and efficient than the original AntNet algorithm for commercial network processors.

Cone-beam computed tomographic evaluation of the temporomandibular joint and dental characteristics of patients with Class II subdivision malocclusion and asymmetry

  • Objective: Treating Class II subdivision malocclusion with asymmetry has been a challenge for orthodontists because of the complicated characteristics of asymmetry. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of dental and skeletal asymmetry in Class II subdivision malocclusion, and to assess the relationship between the condyle-glenoid fossa and first molar. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomographic images of 32 patients with Class II subdivision malocclusion were three-dimensionally reconstructed using the Mimics software. Forty-five anatomic landmarks on the reconstructed structures were selected and 27 linear and angular measurements were performed. Paired-samples t-tests were used to compare the average differences between the Class I and Class II sides; Pearson correlation coefficient (r) was used for analyzing the linear association. Results: The faciolingual crown angulation of the mandibular first molar (p < 0.05), sagittal position of the maxillary and mandibular first molars (p < 0.01), condylar head height (p < 0.01), condylar process height (p < 0.05), and angle of the posterior wall of the articular tubercle and coronal position of the glenoid fossa (p < 0.01) were significantly different between the two sides. The morphology and position of the condyle-glenoid fossa significantly correlated with the three-dimensional changes in the first molar. Conclusions: Asymmetry in the sagittal position of the maxillary and mandibular first molars between the two sides and significant lingual inclination of the mandibular first molar on the Class II side were the dental characteristics of Class II subdivision malocclusion. Condylar morphology and glenoid fossa position asymmetries were the major components of skeletal asymmetry and were well correlated with the three-dimensional position of the first molar.

The Syntheses of Mn(III) Porphyrin Derivatives and Its Photoreactivity (Mn(III)-porphyrin 유도체의 합성과 그 광반응성)

  • We are interested in studying the artificial photolysis of water which mimics the natural plant photosynthesis. In the artificial system there should be a proper photosensitizer, electron donor and electron acceptor. Since Mn-tetramer is known to be the essential part for the oxygten-evolving system in the natural photosynthesis, it is important to know or study the reactivity of Mn-porphyrins. As a model for the Mn-tetramer in the natural photosynthesis, we prepared the lipophilic and hydrophilic Mn-porphyrins. For the lipophilic porphyrin with long hydrocarbon chain, the long hydrocarbon chain was inserted in the porphyrin ring formation step. For the hydrophilic porphyrin, the porphyrin was sulfonated with sulfuric acid. These syntheses of lipophilic and hydrophilic Mn-porphyrins are significant, since the behaviors of these compounds will be different in the microemulsions or vesicles. We also found that the Mn-porphyrins were photoreduced in the microemulsion and water in the presence of amines.

Development of an easy-to-handle murine model for the characterization of radiation-induced gross and molecular changes in skin

  • Background Radiation-induced skin injury is a dose-limiting complication of radiotherapy. To investigate this problem and to develop a framework for making decisions on treatment and dose prescription, a murine model of radiation-induced skin injury was developed. Methods The dorsal skin of the mice was isolated, and irradiation was applied at single doses of 15, 30, and 50 Gy. The mice were followed for 12 weeks with serial photography and laser Doppler analysis. Sequential skin biopsy samples were obtained and subjected to a histological analysis, immunostaining against transforming growth factor beta (TGF-${\beta}$), and Western blotting with Wnt-3 and ${\beta}$-catenin. Increases in the levels of TGF-${\beta}$, Wnt, and ${\beta}$-catenin were detected after irradiation. Results All tested radiation doses caused progressive dermal thickening and fibrosis. The cause of this process, however, may not be radiation alone, as the natural course of wound healing may elicit a similar response. The latent appearance of molecular and histological markers that induce fibrosis in the 15 Gy group without causing apparent gross skin injuries indicates that 15 Gy is an appropriate dose for characterizing the effects of chronic irradiation alone. Thus, this model best mimics the patterns of injury that occur in human subjects. Conclusions This animal model can be used to elucidate the gross and molecular changes that occur in radiation-induced skin injury and provides an effective platform for studying this adverse effect without complicating the process of wound healing.

  • A foxtail moves forward on a flat surface when pushed by a vertical force. The distance moved by the foxtail depends on the degree of deformation. We experimentally investigated the main parameters that influence the distance moved while varying the pushing force, area, and velocity. We then fabricated a nylon barb that mimics the foxtail barb and performed theoretical and experimental analyses of the displacement according to the acting force and the deflection. In addition, we investigated the relation between the displacement and the angle of a foxtail-like robot's leg by varying the clearance between the robot body and the inner surface of the pipe. To find the design parameters of the barb of the robot for tubular-type digestive organs and blood vessels, we studied the relation between the acting force and the elastic modulus while varying the leg diameter.

Vortex Tube Modeling Using the System Identification Method (시스템 식별 방법을 이용한 볼텍스 튜브 모델링)

  • In this study, vortex tube system model is developed to predict the temperature of the hot and the cold sides. The vortex tube model is developed based on the system identification method, and the model utilized in this work to design the vortex tube is ARX type (Auto-Regressive with eXtra inputs). The derived polynomial model is validated against experimental data to verify the overall model accuracy. It is also shown that the derived model passes the stability test. It is confirmed that the derived model closely mimics the physical behavior of the vortex tube from both the static and dynamic numerical experiments by changing the angles of the low-temperature side throttle valve, clearly showing temperature separation. These results imply that the system identification based modeling can be a promising approach for the prediction of complex physical systems, including the vortex tube.

Toluene Inhalation Causes Early Anxiety and Delayed Depression with Regulation of Dopamine Turnover, 5-HT1A Receptor, and Adult Neurogenesis in Mice

  • Inhaled solvents such as toluene are of particular concern due to their abuse potential that is easily exposed to the environment. The inhalation of toluene causes various behavioral problems, but, the effect of short-term exposure of toluene on changes in emotional behaviors over time after exposure and the accompanying pathological characteristics have not been fully identified. Here, we evaluated the behavioral and neurochemical changes observed over time in mice that inhaled toluene. The mice were exposed to toluene for 30 min at a concentration of either 500 or 2,000 ppm. Toluene did not cause social or motor dysfunction in mice. However, increased anxiety-like behavior was detected in the short-term after exposure, and depression-like behavior appeared as delayed effects. The amount of striatal dopamine metabolites was significantly decreased by toluene, which continued to be seen for up to almost two weeks after inhalation. Additionally, an upregulation of serotonin 1A (5-HT1A) receptor in the hippocampus and the substantia nigra, as well as reduced immunoreactivity of neurogenesis markers in the dentate gyrus, was observed in the mice after two weeks. These results suggest that toluene inhalation, even single exposure, mimics early anxiety-and delayed depression-like emotional disturbances, underpinned by pathological changes in the brain.
