We investigate the critical issue on how the BBF (bursty bulk flow) is related to the substorm current wedge formation. Observationally, after analysing data sets from Geotail spacecraft at near tail and many ground magnetic observatories for 9 months period of 1996, we find three BBF events that clearly occurred at the center of the wedge with region I type FAC (field-aligned current), and two other BBF events that were seen outside the wedge sector. Theoretically, we suggest that the substorm current wedge generation by BBF is most likely when the h' VB contribution is dominant in the well-known MHD $J_{II}$ expression (Vasyliunaus, 1984) or when the divergence of the cross-tail current carried by the particle's gradient/curvature drift is predominantly sufficient at the moment of the BBF arrival at near tail.
Density Probability Distribution Functions (PDFs) are a classic statistical way to study properties of Interstellar Medium (ISM) turbulence. In our three-dimensional MHD simulations, density PDFs of the position-position velocity (PPV) spaces are close to a log-normal distribution. the PDF widths depend on the plasma parameters such as magnetic strength and sonic Mach number. Futhermore, we compare these simulations results to Galactic molecular clouds observed by Jackson et. al (2006). By fitting of the velocity dispersion in the spectral line observation, volume density PDFs of the defined molecular clouds indicate that the sound speeds of the turbulences seem to have a few times larger than the simulation results. In order to understand the inconsistency with general characteristics of turbulence, we consider other simulations inducing the turbulent flow randomly at small driving scales. We find that the density PDF width decreases at more smaller driving scale. Finally, the simulations suggest that sources of ISM turbulence in Galactic molecular clouds can be important on small scales.
We use three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of flux emergence from solar subsurface to corona. In our previous work, we reported the relation between magnetic-field configuration and the flux expansion factor. Following these results, we investigate where an upflow is generated in an active region and how its location is related to the flux expansion factor. We also derive physical quantities of a real active region from observation data provided by Nobeyama Radioheliograph (NoRH), X-Ray Telescope (XRT), and Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard Hinode. These physical quantities are plasma density, temperature and flow. By comparing the simulation result and observational one, we will discuss the properties of the location producing a solar wind.
The vacuum interrupter (VI) is widely used in medium-voltage switching circuits due to its abilities and advantages as an environmental friendly circuit breaker. An understanding of the vacuum arc flow phenomena is very important for improving the performance of vacuum interrupter. In order to closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and the thermal flow fields, simultaneously. In this study, we have investigated arc plasma constriction phenomena and an effect of AMF on the arc plasma with the high-current vacuum arcs for the cup-type AMF electrode by using a commercial finite element analysis (FEA) package, ANSYS. The simulation results applied with various AMFs and constant Joule heat generation show that strong axial magnetic field (AMF) permits the arc to be maintained in a diffused mode to a high-current vacuum arc. However, further studies are required on the two-way coupling method and radiation model for arc plasma in order to accomplish the advanced analysis method.
No matter how intense magnetic flux it contains, a coronal magnetic structure has little free magnetic energy when a composing magnetic field is close to a potential field, or current-free field where no volume electric current flows. What kind of electric current system is developed is therefore a key to evaluating the activity of a coronal magnetic structure. Since the corona is a highly conductive medium, a coronal electric current tends to survive without being dissipated, so the free magnetic energy provided by a coronal electric current is normally hard to release in the corona. This work aims at clarifying how a coronal electric current system is structurally developed into a system responsible for producing a flare. Toward this end, we perform diffusive MHD simulations for the emergence of a magnetic flux tube with different twist applied to it, and go through the process of structuring a coronal electric current in a twisted flux tube emerging to form a coronal magnetic structure. Interestingly, when a strongly twisted flux tube emerges, there spontaneously forms a structure inside the flux tube, where a coronal electric current changes flow pattern from field-aligned dominant to cross-field dominant. We demonstrate that this structure plays a key role in releasing free magnetic energy via rapid dissipation of a coronal electric current, thereby producing a flare.
In order to more closely examine the vacuum arc phenomena, it is necessary to predict the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) characteristics by the multidisciplinary numerical modeling, which is coupled with the electromagnetic and hydrodynamic fields, simultaneously. In this study, the thermal-fluid characteristics of high current vacuum arcs were calculated by a commercial multiphysics package, ANSYS, in order to obtain Joule heat, Lorentz force and the interactions with flow variables. We assumed the diffused-mode arc within an AMF vacuum interrupter. It was found with four different currents that the temperature distributions on the anode surface are diffused uniformly without concentration in 7kA for both types (cup and coil-type). But the arc plasma transition and an increase of thermal flux density for increasing the applied current have caused the change of temperature distributions on the anode surface. We should need further studies on the two-way coupling method and radiation model for arc plasmas in order to accomplish the advanced analysis method for multiphysics.
We investigate decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effects of expansion and collapse of the background medium. The problem has two time scales, the eddy turn-over time($t_{eddy}$) and the expansion/collapse time scale(${\tau}_H$). The turbulence is expected to behave differently in two regimes of $t_{eddy}$ < ${\tau}_H$ and $t_{eddy}$ > ${\tau}_H$. For instance, for $t_{eddy}$ < ${\tau}_H$, the turbulence would decay more or less as in a static medium. On the other hand, for $t_{eddy}$ > ${\tau}_H$, the effects of expansion and collapse would be dominant. We examine the properties of turbulence in the regimes of $t_{eddy}$ < ${\tau}_H$ and $t_{eddy}$ > ${\tau}_H$. Based on it, we derive a scaling for the time evolution of flow velocity and magnetic field.
Magnetospheic substorm in the magnetotail region is studied numerically by means of a three dimensional MHD code. The analytic solution for the quiet magnetotail is employed as an initial configuration. The localized solar wind is modeled to enter the simulation domain through the boundaries located in the magnetotail lobe region. As a result of the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, the magnetic field lines are stretched, and the plasma sheet becomes thinner and thinner. When the current driven resistivity is generated, magnetic reconnection is triggered by this resistivity. The resulting plasma jetting is found to be super-magnetosonic. Although the plasmoid formation and its tailward motion is not quite clear as in the two dimensional simulation, which is mainly because of the numerical model chosen for the present simulation, the rarification of the plasmas near the x-point is observed. Field aligned currents are observed in the late expansive stage of the magnetospheric substorm. These field aligned currents flow from the tail toward the ionosphere on the dawn side from the ionosphere to ward the tail on the dusk side, namely in the same sense of the region 1 current. As the field aligned currents develop, it is found that the cross tail current in the earth side midnight section of the magnetic x-point is reduced.
In order to analyze the heat transfer phenomena in the plasma flames, a mathematical model describing heat and fluid flow in an electric arc has been developed and used to predict heat transfer from the arc to the steel bath in a DC Electric Arc Furnace. The arc model takes the separate contributions to the heat transfer from each involved mechanism into account, i.e. radiation, convection and energy transported by electrons. The finite volume method and a SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing MHD equations, i.e., conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy together with the equations describing a $\kappa-\epsilon$ model for turbulence. The model predicts heat transfer for different currents and arc lengths. Finally these calculation results can be used as a useful insight into plasma phenomena of the industrial-scale electric arc furnace. From these results, it can be concluded that higher arc current and longer arc length give high heat transfer.
In this paper, the non-linear mathematical problem is solved via numerical scheme by utilizing shooting method. Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis along mass and heat transfer are accounted for. Non-linear expression is reduced via non-dimensional variables. The simplified ordinary differential equations are tackled by shooting technique. Behavior of distinct influential parameters is investigated graphically and analyzed for temperature and concentration profile. Our finding indicates that temperature profile is enhanced for the thermophoresis, Brownian motion coefficient, Prandtl number, Eckert number and temperature slip parameter. Comparison of numerical technique with the extant literature is made and an acceptable agreement is attained. Graphs are plotted to examine the influence of these parameters.
