Lake Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Dominican Republic, recently has undergone unusual water area changes since 2001 thus it has been affected seriously by local community's livelihood. Earthquakes and seismic activities of Hispaniola plate tectonic coupled with human activities and climate change are addressed as factors causing the increasing. Thus, a thorough study on relationship between lake area changing, and those factors is needed urgently. To do so, this study applied MESMA on MODIS data to extract water area of Lake Enriquillo during 2001 and 2012 bimonthly, with six issues 12-year. MODIS provides high temporal resolution, and its coarse spatial resolution is compensated by MESMA fraction map. The increase in water area was $142.2km^2$, and the maximum lake area was $338.0km^2$ (in 2012). Water areas extracted by two Landsat scenes at two different times with three image classification approaches (ISODATA, MNDWI, and TCW) were used to assess accuracy of MODIS and MESMA results; it indicated that MESMA water areas are same as ISODATA's, less than 0.4%, while the highest difference is between MESMA and TCW, 2.4%. A number of previously formulated hypotheses of lake area change were investigated based on the outcomes of the present study, though none of them could fully explain the changes.

Submarines are weapons systems that have been proven to be useful in battle since World War I and have continued to improve the efficiency of propulsion systems in order to be used efficiently on the battlefield. In particular, countries that unable to utilize nuclear propulsion systems make efforts to increase the efficiency of Air Independent Propulsion systems, and typical examples are fuel cells, Stirling engines and MESMA. It is also expected that the development of new propulsion systems such as hydrogen-reformer fuel cells, metal-air fuel cell and direct combustion propulsion systems will continue, so the characteristics of these will be examined and the performance based on the published data be checked in this thesis.

Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar, do ponto de vista da alquimia, O Alquimia, considerado uma das obras mais representativas do escritor brasileiro Paulo Coelho. Para tanto, começamos a observar as características da alquimia à qual o próprio autor disse que dedicava 11 anos para estudá-la por volta da década de 1970 quando o mundo estava sofrendo grandes mudanças sociais. Desta observação, entendemos que, sendo uma projeção do 'inconsciente' conforme diz C. G. Jung, a essência da alquimia consiste resumidamente nos seguintes conceitos: união de elementos opostos, transformação e salvação. A partir daí, tentamos estudar como esses coneitos estão diluídos na estrutura de O Alquimia e como a experiência do Paulo Coelho com a alquimia interioriza-se no mundo literário dele. E entendemos que os conceitos simbólicos da alquimia e as mensagens que a experiência do escritor com a alquimia configura em suas obras literárias compartilham a quase mesma dimensão semântica. Percebemos também que em alguns aspectos as idéias do escritor consolidadas em torno da sua pesquisa da alquimia vão às vezes além dos conceitos genéricos da alquimia, atingindo assim uma dimensão bastante peculiar e fundamental para compreender melhor o seu universo literário: para ele que se declara católico, Deus não é católico nem islâmico, nem budista, nem hinduista. Por exemplo, ele diz que Deus é um só e é que o Seu nome varia dependendo da religião, porque cada religião precisa escolher um nome para chamá-lo.
