Characterization of Microfluidic system integrated with micropump and microvalve (초미세 유체 제어 시스템 구현을 위한 마이크로 펌프와 밸브의 집적)

  • Micro ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) 기술을 이용한 초미세 유체 제어 시스템 (마이크로 펌프, 마이크로 밸브, 마이크로 채널, 마이크로 믹서 등)은 화학, 생명분야의 DNA 분석, 항원-항체 분석, 질병의 진단 등에 사용되는 lab-on-a-chip, micro total analysis system ($\mu$-TAS) 등에서 화학 및 바이오 유체를 제어하는 분석 시스템의 일부분으로서 사용되며 필수적으로 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 microchip을 구현하기 위해 초미세 유체 제어 소자인 마이크로 펌프와 밸브를 같은 기관 위에 polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)와 indium tin oxide (ITO)-Glass를 사용하여 동일한 구조로 집적 하였다. 마이크로 펌프의 pumping rate은 인가 직류 펄스 전력의 주파수와 duty 비를 변화시켜 최적화하였다. 직류 펄스 전력 500 mW를 인가하였을 때 주파수 2 Hz, duty 비 7 %에서 약 $1.05{\mu}l/min$의 최대 유량이 측정되었다. 마이크로 밸브는 ITO 히터에 전력을 인가함으로서 유량의 on/off 제어가 잘 됨을 확인할 수 있었고 유체를 closing하기 위해 필요한 전력은 약 300 mW이다.

Biomimetic Gyroscope Integrated with Actuation Parts of a Robot Inspired by Insect Halteres (평형곤을 모사한 생체모방형 구동부 일체형 각속도 센서)

  • Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscopes are widely used in various robot applications. However, these conventional gyroscopes need to vibrate the proof mass using a built-in actuator at a fixed resonance frequency to sense the Coriolis force. When a robot is not moving, the meaningless vibration of the gyroscope wastes power. In addition, this continuous vibration makes the sensor vulnerable to external sound waves with a frequency close to the proof-mass resonance frequency. In this paper, a feasibility study of a new type of gyroscope inspired by insect halteres is presented. In dipterous insects, halteres are a biological gyroscope that measures the Coriolis force. Wing muscles and halteres are mechanically linked, and the halteres oscillate simultaneously with wing beats. The vibrating haltere experiences the Coriolis force if the insect is going through a rotational motion. Inspired by this haltere structure, a gyroscope using a thin mast integrated with a robot actuation mechanism is proposed. The mast vibrates only when the robot is moving without requiring a separate actuator. The Coriolis force of the mast can be measured with an accelerometer installed at the tip of the mast. However, the signal from the accelerometer has multiple frequency components and also can be highly corrupted with noise, such that raw data are not meaningful. This paper also presents a suitable signal processing technique using the amplitude modulation method. The feasibility of the proposed haltere-inspired gyroscope is also experimentally evaluated.

바이오 센서 응용을 위한 Tree-like 실리콘 나노와이어의 표면성장 및 특성파악

  • 실리콘 나노와이어는 높은 표면적으로 인해 뛰어난 감지 능력을 가지는 재료 중 하나로 다양한 센서 응용 분야에 사용되고 있다. 이를 제작하는 방법에는 Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) 공정을 이용한 Top-down 방식과 Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) 공정을 이용한 Bottom-up 방식이 널리 사용되고 있다. 특히 Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition(PECVD)와 Au 촉매를 이용한 Bottom-up 방식은 수십 나노미터 이하의 실리콘 나노와이어를 간단한 변수 조절을 통해 성장시킬 수 있다. 또한 Au/Si의 공융점인 363$^{\circ}C$보다 낮은 온도에서 $SiH_4$를 분해시킬 수 있어 열적 효과로 인한 손실을 줄일 수 있는 장점을 지니고 있다. 하지만 PECVD를 이용한 실리콘 나노와이어 성장은 VLS 공정을 통해 표면으로부터 수직으로 성장하게 되는데 이는 센서 응용을 위한 전극 사이의 수평 연결 어려움을 지니고 있다. 따라서 이를 피하기 위한 표면 성장된 실리콘 나노와이어가 요구된다. 본 연구에서는 PECVD VLS 공정을 이용하여 $HAuCl_4$를 촉매로 이용한 표면 성장된 Tree-like 실리콘 나노와이어를 성장시켰다. 공정가스로는 $SiH_4$와 이를 분해시키기 위해 Ar 플라즈마를 사용 하였고 웨이퍼 표면에 HAuCl4를 분사하고 고진공 상태에서 챔버 기판을 370$^{\circ}C$까지 가열한 후 플라즈마 파워(W) 및 공정 압력(mTorr)을 변수로 두어 실험을 진행하였다. 기존의 보고된 연구와 달리 환원된 금 입자 대신 $HAuCl_4$용액을 그대로 사용하였는데 이는 표면 조도(Surface roughness)를 가지는 Au 박막 상태로 존재하게 된다. 이 중 마루(Asperite) 부분에 PECVD로부터 발생된 실리콘 나노 입자가 상대적으로 높은 확률로 흡착하게 되어 실리콘 나노와이어의 표면성장을 유도하게 된다. 성장된 실리콘 나노와이어는 SEM과 EDS를 이용하여 직경, 길이 및 화학적 성분을 측정하였다. 직경은 약 100 nm, 길이는 약 10 ${\mu}m$ 정도로 나타났으며 Tree-like 실리콘 나노와이어가 성장되었다. 향후 전극이 형성된 기판위에 이를 직접 성장시킴으로써 이 물질의 I-V 특성을 파악 할 것이며 이는 센서 응용 분야에 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

A Physical Cochlear Model for Transducer Performance Evaluation of Implantable Hearing Aid with Round Window Driver (정원창 구동기의 진동체 성능 평가를 위한 내이 물리모델)

  • Recently, various hearing aids are developed to overcome hearing loss. There are available hearing aids, such as air conduction hearing aid, implantable middle ear hearing aid and so on. But air conduction hearing aid is inconvenience caused by howling, and ossicle chain driving type implantable middle ear hearing aid has some week point due to problem of possible nercobiosis of coupling spot along incus long process. In recent years, in order to improve these shortcomings round window (RW) driving hearing aid has been paying attention. In this paper, the physical cochlear model is proposed for a performance evaluation of the RW driving hearing aids of a transducer. In order to verify an experiment proposed on a performance of physical cochlear model, the transducer which has ossicles characteristics is used. By measuring and comparing the frequency characteristics of transducer with ossicles and human temporal bone, performance of physical cochlear model was verified. As from the result of experiment, it is expected that an implemented cochlear model is useful for evaluating characteristics of RW transducer.

A Novel Cooling Method by Acoustic Streaming Induced by Ultrasonic Resonator (초음파 진동자에 의해 유도된 음향유동을 이용한 첨단 냉각법)

  • A novel cooling method induced by acoustic streaming generated by ultrasonic vibration at 30㎑ is presented. Ultrasonic vibration is obtained by piezoelectric devices and the maximum vibration amplitude of 50 m is achieved by including a horn, mechanical vibration amplifier in the system and making the complete system resonate. To investigate the enhancement of heat transfer capability of acoustic streaming, the temperature variations of heat source and air in the vicinity of heat source are measured in real-time. It is observed that acoustic streaming is instantly induced by ultrasonic vibration, resulting in the significant temperature drop due to the bulk air flow caused by acoustic streaming. In addition, it is observed that the cooling effect on the heat source is maximized when the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source coincides with the multiples of half-wavelength of the ultrasonic wave. This fact results from the resonance of the sound wave. The theoretical analysis of the dependence on the gap is also accomplished and verified by experiment. The advantage of the proposed cooling method by acoustic streaming is noise-free due to the ultrasonic vibration and maintenance-free because of the absence of moving parts. Moreover. This cooling method can be utilized to the nano and micro-electro mechanical systems, where the fan-based conventional cooling method can not be employed.

K-DEV: A Borehole Deviation Logging Probe Applicable to Steel-cased Holes (철재 케이싱이 설치된 시추공에서도 적용가능한 공곡검층기 K-DEV)

  • We designed a borehole deviation survey tool applicable for steel-cased holes, K-DEV, and developed a prototype for a depth of 500 m aiming to development of own equipment required to secure deep subsurface characterization technologies. K-DEV is equipped with sensors that provide digital output with verified high performance; moreover, it is also compatible with logging winch systems used in Korea. The K-DEV prototype has a nonmagnetic stainless steel housing with an outer diameter of 48.3 mm, which has been tested in the laboratory for water resistance up to 20 MPa and for durability by running into a 1-km deep borehole. We confirmed the operational stability and data repeatability of the prototype by constantly logging up and down to the depth of 600 m. A high-precision micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope was used for the K-DEV prototype as the gyro sensor, which is crucial for azimuth determination in cased holes. Additionally, we devised an accurate trajectory survey algorithm by employing Unscented Kalman filtering and data fusion for optimization. The borehole test with K-DEV and a commercial logging tool produced sufficiently similar results. Furthermore, the issue of error accumulation due to drift over time of the MEMS gyro was successfully overcome by compensating with stationary measurements for the same attitude at the wellhead before and after logging, as demonstrated by the nearly identical result to the open hole. We believe that the methodology of K-DEV development and operational stability, as well as the data reliability of the prototype, were confirmed through these test applications.
